If you start with a 20 degree hybrid what should be the loft of the next club down, and does that spread of degrees apply to the entire set?

Martin C.

Hello Mike, the next close down? I’m guessing you’re talking about stronger? I would say if you have a 20° hybrid your next clutch should be a 15 or 16° fairway wood. That depends on your club speed. If you swing it less than 90 miles an hour I would get a 18° Fivewood

Peter E.

Martin, I still have a 3-Wood in my bag. My swing speed is around 99mph. I am 70 years old. I can hit my 3-Wood pretty well most of the time but it is a more difficult club to hit. Should I re-think the club and go to a Hybrid?

Martin C.

Peter, that’s great speed. You can certainly handle a Threewood with that speed. If you aren’t hitting it well, you might consider your club approach; may be too steep or across your target line.

Prof L.

Thanks for the demonstration of the importance of club head speed in relation to distance gained using a 3 wood. Does the shaft flex enter the equation, Would a lighter senior flex shaft affect the distance for an older golfer using a 3 wood?

Martin C.

Great question. The shaft definitely affects the delivered loft. More flexible, more kick. Stronger shaft, typically less kick.

New M.

Does the same principle apply to irons - ie is it better for lower speed players to use a 30 degree hybrid than a 6 iron ?

Martin C.

Yes, if you have a low swing speed, your longest layer should be a seven or six iron, backed up by hybrids.

Bernie B.

so on the 3 wood versus the hybrid, they hybrid traveled farther in the air because it is a higher degree lofted club correct? I am new to the game and was wondering why the driver is the club that goes the furtherest but you are saying a hybrid may be a better choice

Martin C.

Great question. Slower swing speeds cannot get the golf ball to fly high from stronger lofted clubs. Thus, additional loft is required. even a driver should have more loft if your swing speed is slower

John M H.

Martin is it possible to understand shaft types and club types to use without a fitting? I am 54, swing a bit over 100 mph. My shafts are regular flex and I have been told I should switch to a stiffer shaft. Thoughts?

Martin C.

John, if you swing a driver 100 miles an hour, you are certainly a candidate for stiff shafts. A lot of it depends on how you transition the club from backswing to downswing. Quick transition, stiffer shaft.

Wesley H.

Martin,
I am really comfortable hitting my 3-hybrid from the fairway. Currently, I'm only carrying a 3-wood besides my driver, no other fairway woods. Would a 4 or 5-wood help me in terms of carry, compared to my 3-hybrid? My swing speed with the 3-wood is in the 80's.

Martin C.

Wes, if you were swinging Threewood 80 mph you need something with high launch and high spin and around 16° of loft to be an effective fairway club. After that, perhaps one more hybrid between that club and your effective three hybrid, or a seven wood.

New M.

Hi Martin what’s your thoughts on a7wood for a man in his fifties mid to high handicapper

Scott M.

Great video. Do you think the same logic applies to a driver? If a person struggles with a 3 wood, should they be considering a higher lofted driver? Perhaps something with 12 degrees of loft vs. 9, for example?
