The U.S. had the more experienced team, the Europeans were eager to win their third cup in a row. Trailing 10-6 Crenshaw felt fate was on his side despite the deficit. At the time, no Ryder Cup team had ever rallied to win from four points down in the Sunday matches. The U.S. team won 8 1/2 of 12 points rallying to beat the Europeans 14 1/2-13 1/2 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
