Hard to believe Rams Hill Golf Club was shut down in 2010, a casualty of economic downturn and water rights. But new ownership brought the course back to life. It's as fun as any I've played in Palm Springs, and easily as good as any in San Diego County.

They no longer play the PGA Tour's Humana Challenge (formerly the Bob Hope Classic) at SilverRock Resort in La Quinta, California, but that doesn't mean SilverRock has become irrelevant. In fact, the Arnold Palmer design, which opened in 2005, remains one of the premier playgrounds in the Coachella Valley. The fairways skirt deep bunkering, the desert landscape, and most impressively, the Santa Rosa Mountains. It takes extra effort to play golf and not to get caught up in their grandeur.

San Vicente Golf Resort, a hidden oasis located roughly 35 miles northeast of downtown San Diego, continues to invest in its AAA 3-Diamond Lodge and Ted Robinson-designed golf course to keep customers happy. The course is currently undergoing a million-dollar turf-reduction program to save on water costs. Despite all the changes, San Vicente has kept its old-school parkland character intact.

Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif., is one of the best casino courses in the U.S. The course headlines the Four-Diamond Barona Resort & Casino, located 30 miles northeast of San Diego. Forget gambling in the casino. There's plenty of risk-reward on this Gary Roger Baird design.
