Hilton Head National Golf Club

About
Sprawling across 300 acres of lush, Carolina Lowcountry, Hilton Head National Golf Club has gained a reputation as being one of the area's best public courses. The course was a collaboration between Gary Player and Bobby Weed, who each designed a nine. Weed designed the front nine with the intention of creating a complement to the Player-designed back nine rather than making them too similar. He included larger greens with more dramatic undulations. The signature hole is the tricky sixth, which features the largest lake on the golf course bordering its entire right side and deep pot bunkers along the greensides. The back nine has many challenging holes as well, including the course's number one handicap hole, the par-5 seventh. It is the ninth that might be Hilton Head National's toughest though, with a deep marsh along the right side of a narrow fairway.

One of the best
Been playing at Hilton Head Nationals each time I. Am in the area. If is a great golf course. Always in wonderful shape. Today was no exception. Tees and fairways were superb for late November. And the greens were so smooth and true. Maybe a hair slower than normal. But it rained a good bit earlier in the morning. Pace was 4 hour and 15 minutes on a cart path only day. The layout is outstanding. Open off the tee generally. Not a lot of forced carries. But tough up and downs around the elevated and domed greens. It used to be significantly cheaper than on island courses. The only negative is the price has risen sharply over the years. But it’s still one of my favorite courses anywhere.
One of the best courses in Hilton Head
Cannot say enough positive things about this course. Staff was super friendly, pace of play was great (3:40 round), conditions superb, and just a beautiful course. Have played probably every course on Hilton Head (other than Long Cove and Harbour Town) and would rank this the best. They keep the course in great condition, the layout is straight forward but challenging, and the terrain/flora and fauna were a visual treat. Would highly recommend this course be added as a must play when visiting Hilton Head.
One of my favorites
Hilton Head National is one of my favorite rounds there are. I stopped on the way home from Florida to play an early afternoon round on the way home. It’s a good player friendly layout. The white tees are a little short for me. And so I play a blended tee of white and blue sometimes. There are not a lot of forces carries. The ones there are are manageable. The fairways are pretty wide. But most approaches are pretty tight and make for a tough up and down. The day I played the course was in really good shape. Tees were a tad Sandy but fairways and greens in really good shape. The greens were sneaky quick and true. The only draw back is the price has steadily increased over the years. And I payed $104 with tax for an afternoon round. This is pushing my limit of price. However, it seems it’s still cheaper than many of the big name courses on the island and in just about the same condition. So save a few bucks and go play here.
Hilton Head National Is Always Top Notch
Course and greens were in amazing shape. This is the third course that we have played this week and Hilton Head National was light years ahead of the other courses which had torn up tee boxes and worn out greens. The staff at Hilton Head National was extremely helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this course. This should be a must play during your trip to Hilton Head.
Excellent as always
Go to course when visiting the area. The conditions are always good, the greens are always great, the staff is very nice, good practice facilities. Great layout, wont beat you up if you arent playing too good. Good warmup course for tougher courses later on, while still fun and interesting to play. Very much a second shot course. Fairways are fairly open and you usually can find your ball off the tee. However, greens are generally small and elevated and fall off in all directions. So missing the green makes for a tough par. It is always a little cheaper than the on island courses and I feel like a better value for your money.
Solid off-island Hilton Head golf
Hilton Head National is a fine place to round out a. golf trip in the area. It's not going to be the headliner, but it is an interesting layout where both Bobby Weed and Gary Player have worked - an unusual combination of architects. And while many resort-area courses suffer from being surrounded by houses, it is refreshing that that is not the case at HHN.
Would recommend this course.
Very pleased with both course condition and layout. Pro shop staff and on course personnel were very knowledgeable and friendly.
An okay course
Felt like the course was just okay compared to others in the area. Conditions were good, greens were pretty good even with being aerated a few weeks before. The layout is not anything special. A lot of holes that felt the same and repeated. Do not feel it is worth the price. There are other courses in the area that are better for the same price or cheaper. Range balls are pricey- $10 for a small bag. The grill had already closed halfway through our round at about 4:15. There are better options around.
One of the best
Hilton Head National is my go to round every time we are in the area. The layout is great for the average golfer, its really fun to play, and the conditions are usually as good or better than most of the courses on the island. Over the years the prices have continued to creep up. This used to be a good quality play. This time I think I paid about $125 which is alot of money to me. But the condition of the course is outstanding. The layout is great and the people are great. If you are in the Hilton Head area you want to give it a play.
Great Time
Played Hilton Head National with my wife while on vacation. HHN was as good as we had been told by several people. Very nice layout loved that there were no houses on the course. Course conditions were very good, with only a few tee boxes being thin on grass. Pace of play was good; we came in at 4:05 with an 8:16 tee time on Friday. While this course in not "on the island" it is just across the bridge and should be on your list to play.
Not worth the money
Have played this course a few times and after today not sure if I will go back. Greens were fast and in great shape. Staff was friendly and helpful. This is where the positive ends. Tee boxes were not in nice shape and not worth the amount they were charging. The rough had lots of bare spots with dirt showing including around the greens. For the amount of money range balls should be included. The pace of play was some of the worst I have seen, taking 2 1/2 hours to play 9 holes. The ranger came around several times even joking to hurry up and wait. My suggestion is to spread the tee times apart slightly more or actually get the slow groups in front of us to speed up. As of now I cannot recommend this course.
Wet but playable
A nice layout and worth the trip off the island to play this course. Even though it rained a lot the day before, it was 90 degrees off the cart path, and with GPS in the cart, that's always a good thing. Will be playing here again.
Amazing Conditions, average layout
The layout was pretty simple but the conditions were amazing. Staff was very friendly, course was expensive but definitely worth it!
Always Solid
Hilton Head National is my go to round when in the area. The course is always in really good shape. And it is usually cheaper than rounds on the Island. The price has slowly increased over the years. I paid $109 this morning. And I’m pretty sure that’s the first time I’ve paid over $100 there. I feel like for that much range balls should be included. But they are not. Also, the greens had been sanded this morning it looked like-which I know if necessary-but customers should be given a break on the price. Never should a person have to pay over $100 and have sandy greens. But with all that said it’s a great course. Other than the sand on the greens it was in great shape. The layout is really fun and won’t beat you up. I struggled with the driver nightly today and still was within a couple shots of my average. It’s a second shot golf course for sure. And even though the greens were sandy. They still rolled pretty good.
You start off with a medium length dogleg right par 4 to a pretty big green. Number 2 is a longer par 4. With a very elevated green. You don’t want to miss your approach left. 3 is a straight away par 5 that is a good chance for a par. 4 is a medium length par 3 with a carry over a pretty big waste bunker that runs from tee to green. 5 is a shorter pretty hard dogleg right. 6 is the signature hole. A short par 4. With water all down the right and a cross bunker that eats up half the fairway. There are several options on how to play. The green is long and narrow. 7 is a short par 3. With marsh right and long. 8 is a long left turning par 5. With a small green that slopes off on all sides. 9 is a short straight away par 4. As is 10. Both are good chances to score. 11 and 12 are both dogleg left par 4. 12 turns more and is more up the hill than 11 but both are harder holes on the course. 13 is a short downhill par 3. There are several bunkers around it. With a really deep on hidden behind the green. 14 is a medium length dog leg right par 4 with a carry over a waste bunker on the approach. 15 is another shorter par 3 with the green sitting at an odd angle to the tee. 16 is a long par 5. You have to keep your shots to the right hand half of the fairway. Otherwise a large tree will block out your approach from the left. 17 is a shorter par 4 to a plateau fairway that drops downhill to the green. 18 is a good finishing hole. With marsh on the right that cuts in and constricts the fairway about 100 yards out. The approach is uphill to a large double green it used to share with an old 9 holes that were taken out when the by pass was built.
All in all it’s a great day on the course for an average golfer. And you won’t be disappointed if you play here.
One of Hilton Head's best to play.
If you are planning a golf trip to Hilton Head make sure this course is on your list. Its a must play. Conditions were great and everybody working there was friendly and helpful. Greens were probably best we played all week. Not much more to say but play this course.
AFTER MANY YEARS, DISAPPOINTED
I have been playing this course for years and it was always a 'go to' when we vacation on HHI. This year there seeded to be more severe restriction for handicapped golfer access to fairways- for no apparent good reason - as six holes (33%) were off limits for carts. I have two severely arthritic joints - left knee and right ankle. plus a ranger seeing me walk with difficulty had the gall to tell us we were running 20 min behind - even though no one else was in sight!
I am permanently striking it from our list! the next day (it was drizzling at the start) we played Fazio course at Palmetto dunes and my GPS cart let me drive right up to the greens on all faiways!
Excellent Course
Course was in great shape and the greens were excellent. Weather was cloudy & cold but it didn't take away from the course. Fairways were generous so you can score here. I would def come back!
Highly recommended
Excellent conditions tees through greens, especially the smooth true fairly fast greens. The course is quite wide open and forgiving, in part because the areas under the trees are very well blown clear of leaves. This was helpful to those of us who pulled or sliced tee balls a little more often than we would have hoped to. Lastly, they are very friendly, helpful, and professional. I was absent-minded enough to leave my lob wedge on # 14, but couldn't recall when I had last played it (rarely used), so one of the staff drove the last several holes until he found it on # 14. What a great guy, and staff!

Always solid
Stopped in for a round on my way from Kiawah to Florida. This is one of my favorite courses anywhere. It’s always in good shape. Even when it’s crowded the pace of play is decent. The greens are great. Some of the smoothest I’ve ever played. And quick in a nice smooth way. I will say that the fairways had not been overseeded this year. Only painted which is a bit of a disappointment. However the layout is awesome. It won’t beat you up. But the short holes are some of the most challenging. If you’re in the area it’s the best deal for your money around.
