Monument at Troon North Golf Club

About
The deserts of Arizona are the last place you'd expect to find an ode to the British Open but the Monument course at Troon North is a love song to the golf courses on the other side of the Atlantic, from the ability to play bump-and-run shots into greens into the names of some of the holes.
A round of golf on the Monument Course at the Troon North Golf Club kicks off on a par-4 hole that measures 444 yards from the Black tees. Things get long on the third hole, a par 5 that plays to 564 yards from the Black tee and is one of four holes that come in at over 500 yards from the Black tees.
The 18th hole on the Monument Course at the Troon North Golf Club will be a relative breeze, then, a par 4 that measures just 370 yards from the Black tees.

This Course Has It All
One of the most difficult things about playing golf at the Monument Course is all the distractions from nature and the way that Tom Weiskopf has rearranged the thousands of huge boulders to create a masterpiece of desert golf.
The only downside is that everyone wants to play here. On a Friday morning, we had a 6:30 tee time and were the first group off. The managers decided to double book the tee sheet
because there was also a big tournament starting at noon.
We made great time, the course was in pristine condition, and everybody was enjoying themselves when we ran into the extra bookers on hole #11. This group was staffed with
some serious duffers and our pace of play came to a screeching stall.
There are many classic short par fours here that are designed to eat your lunch. They are short but so deceptively difficult. The par fives seemed easy and were reached in regulation.
The drivable par four, Canyon Pass is 283 yards from the gold tee box. The tee is elevated high
above a tiny green in a bowl surrounded by boulder outcroppings on both sides. Neither gold tee golfer came close, they both wound up in the left desert.
The #16 hole Lone Mountain is way over 100 feet above the green. The distance from the copper tees is 213 yards and most of this is carry.
The greens are putting true but you can be easily tricked into giving away the hole. They
are set to be replaced this year because of some poa annua infestation. This morning they were rolling.
What an impressive golf course, this is my favorite in Phoenix so far.
Wrong Grass for Greens?
Troon is well maintained with spectacular scenery and a very insteresting layout. I was really shocked by the condition of the greens, however. Each green looked as if a .50 cal unloaded on it from a helicopter. I played two other area courses and when I told them about Troon, the first thing they asked about was "how were the greens." So I don't know what the problem is...I doubt that just really uncool people play the course and fail to repair their divots, but maybe that is the case. Either way, something should be done about pretty outrageous pockmarks on all the greens.
Nice but overpriced
Very nice course, however value for the cost was lacking. There are courses in the area that are as nice at a much better value.
Nice, however too expensive
Nice course with good amenities. I do feel that there are similar courses in the area that are equal at a much better value.
Wow!
Pricey but worth it. Fantastic layout. Tough but fair. So scenic! Greens are demonic even though a lot of players don’t fix ball marks. If you’re inclined to play it don’t hesitate
Just OK
Nice course, Tee’s and fairways were in great condition but the greens had a unusually high number of un-repaired ball marks. Overall I have played courses that I felt were a much better value.
Excellent
Pristine conditions and really challenging layout. Green we’re fast and true. Rough near the greens was ideal for chipping. Only minor complaint was a lot of ball marks on the greens. Highly recommend
Excellent all around
Definitely the best course I’ve ever played with the course conditions. There wasn’t a blade of grass out of place. I was a little hesitant going it with all the complaints about the ball marks on the green. Yes there were some old ones but the staff does a good job of rolling the greens so they don’t effect your putts. No complaints from me about the greens. The course itself was a challenging desert course with a lot of placement shots. I lost more balls in this round than I have in my last 15 rounds combined, but I still had a blast. Pace of play was great. Finished in just over 4 hours even with a 10 minute pit stop at the turn. Saw the cart girl 3-4 times throughout the round. Overall - fantastic experience.
Great Design / Terrible Green Condition
Played Troon North Monument as the closing course to our three day tournament (also played We-Ko-Pa & Grayhawk). The course design/setting was stunning, but we were surprised to find the greens in terrible condition. Unrepaired ball marks and dead spots littered every green on the course, which created a very difficult & unpredictable landscape to putt through. Was in worse shape than a local muni. Not at all what you would expect for a course with $275+ greens fees. Highly disappointing
Great course
The course was moderately maintained, lots of unrepaired divots. The greens were very fast and mostly flat. The pace was good and the staff were very friendly. Over all good value as we picked up a sale v
