Oyster Reef Golf Course
About
Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.
The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,
The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

Great day on a great course
Whenever I am in the area I make sure that I play here. The staff is friendly and the course is always in very good condition. It has some nice views and challenging holes. Lots of bunkers to avoid on tee shots, as well as approaches to the green. The greens are in beautiful condition. Very enjoyable round of golf.
Friendly staff, nice layout, no GPS in carts
As visitors to courses in touristy areas we're accustomed to getting the cold treatment from course staff. Not here--everyone was cheerful and friendly. I believe that happy staff usually means good management and that means above average conditions. Oyster Reef is a nice place to play. Only dings are lack of GPS in carts (very helpful for visitors) and slightly slow play. Satellite map views were concerning as it seemed that the holes were tightly bound by trees and houses. Fairways were actually not daunting and houses were tucked away.
Decent track with slow play
The course is playable with fairly wide fairways. Many holes had similar layouts from the blue teee with a 250-280 tee shot with a dog leg. The green were good with decent speed. The play was slow during our afternoon round.
Nice, but Hilton Head has better to offer.
Nice course and friendly staff. However, fairways and greens were strewn with debris and pine straw. Many unrepaired divots in the fairways and pitch marks on the greens. I even observed cigar butts on one green. It’s in a beautiful location, but there is quite a distance from each hole to tee box, often winding through the neighborhood. It’s expensive, and given the price other courses on the island are much better maintained. George Fazio is similarly priced and pristine compared to Oyster Reef. Frankly, I was disappointed. It’s a lot to pay and have a less than optimal experience. I would not return.
Fantastic 5 star course
Course was a little wet but playing conditions were fantastic. Fairways were very well filled in and moving ball was not necessary. Green speed was very consistent but a little slow, probably because of a few days of rain. Smooth and great putting greens that had very little break. I made more putts than ever because they were very true.
Can not say enough good things about course. This is a must play for golfers of all level. Would play this course every day.
Always a must play in Hilton Head.
Enjoy the lay out and the course was in great shape. Greens were excellent and rolled true. Hit you short puts with pace if you want to sink them! Cart paths could use some reconditioning due to tree root growth.
Challenging but not too difficult
Loved the staff and layout of course
Very well maintained and designed
What a time!!!
Played last day of August , weather was fantastic, course was in premium condition. Greens were a bit slow from rain but breaks read true. Played in less than 4 hours and staff was great , this course is now in my every year rotation!
Excellent course!!
Excellent golf course on Hilton head Island recommend the play this beautiful golf course!
Good Course
I have played here several times. It is a very good course and in good condition. The 9th hole has a temporary green so if you use GPS you will not be able to get a yardage to the pin. The restaurant is very good.
Nice golf course to play as visitor
Course is in great shape minus the greens which have been aerated recently. Greens are very slow. Nice layout of holes with good variety. 9th green has temp but not listed. Otherwise nice course to play as visitor. Would recommended especially in another week or 2 after green has recovered.
First Time, Really Enjoyed
Have been to several courses around HH over the years, our first time here. I would definitely head back there next time we're in town. The course was in great shape (aside from a repair on nine, though they have good arrangement for that). The people were all outstanding and quite friendly. The pace of play was amazing, as there was no one out there during a hot August afternoon midweek. As average golfers, my son and I felt challenged but not overwhelmed. The biggest thing we noticed... It was DEAD QUIET. Like, we've never had a more peaceful round of golf. If you're not used to it, it could be almost eerie, but if you're looking to get away and enjoy a peaceful place... This is it!
Other courses may be more challenging, have more water, have more variance hole to hole... But if there is a better value and experience at a course in HH, I haven't yet experienced it. Thanks so much for a great day!
Oyster Reef Hilton Head Island
Very nice course. Definitely difficult for any level but very playable. Played a dozen courses on the island and in my opinion a top ten. Worth playing
Pleasant experience.
Played Oyster Reef today and thoroughly enjoyed our round there. The golf course was nice but what stood out to me was the friendliness of the staff. From the guys grabbing bags in the parking lot to staff in pro shop and even including the starter, they treated you as a valued guest.
I will definitely play this course again our next time in Hilton Head.
Great shape!
The course was in great shape despite the huge amount of rain we have been getting. Some courses have been challenged by this excessive rain, but this was very good!
Great Fairways
Fairways and traps were in great shape. Overall layout is very good, greens had some sand because of aeration, but overall a very well maintained course. Had a great time!
Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We definitely understand your frustrations. Aeration is a very important part of our agronomy practices, and It ensures the long-term health and playability of the turf. However, it does make for unpleasant playing conditions. This is why we make sure to discount our tee times during the 10-day recovery process.
