No Small-Potatoes Golf Destination
Though relatively sparsely populated, Idaho offers a wealth of worthwhile activities and spectacular scenery across its nearly 500-mile north-south expanse. Golfers benefit from its bounty as well, with several compelling courses throughout the state, including some wonderful mountain layouts.
The area most associated with golf in Idaho is Lake Coeur d’Alene and the surrounding area. The famous Coeur d’Alene Resort golf course has graced magazine spreads for decades, thanks in part to its unique and famous floating island-green par-3 14th hole. The lake and Pend Oreille mountains beyond make for some of the most spectacular scenery in inland American golf. About 25 miles south and west, Circling Raven Golf Club offers an equally compelling course, designed by Gene Bates, on the grounds of the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort. The setting of the course alternates between open meadow and dense forest, all on rolling hills that make for a fun and scenic round. It was recently voted the #1 golf course in the state.
Other highlights of Idaho’s golf scene include Sun Valley Resort, as much a summer spot for golfers as it is a winter retreat for skiers, with its forested 18-hole Trail Creek course and ridgetop White Clouds nine. North of Boise near the attractive town of McCall, Jug Mountain Ranch Golf Course is a popular semi-private course, voted #2 in the state by Golf Advisor reviewers in 2019.
