Wisconsin comes of age as a golf destination
Wisconsin has matured into, arguably, the country’s top summer golf destination. The year 2017 was a watershed moment: Erin Hills hosted the U.S. Open and Sand Valley opened its first course, a sprawling, linksy design by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Wisconsin joined Pennsylvania, California, North Carolina and New York as the only U.S. states with two public major championship venues. The Straits course at Whistling Straits – the anchor of four Pete Dye courses at The American Club in Kohler – has hosted three PGA Championships.
Good golf is sprinkled throughout Wisconsin’s glacial-cut hills. Brown Deer Park in Milwaukee hosted the PGA Tour from 1994-2009. Touristy Wisconsin Dells isn’t all waterslides and wave pools. Wild Rock and Trapper’s Turn form a strong twosome. The 36-hole Grand Geneva Resort & Spa and 54-hole Geneva National Resort & Club, both in Lake Geneva, feature architects you’ll recognize – Palmer, Trevino, Nicklaus, Player and Dye. The University of Wisconsin’s home course, University Ridge in Verona, site of a PGA Tour Champions event hosted by Steve Stricker, provides golfers a higher education, too. From classic courses like Lawsonia Links to the modern marvels at Sand Valley and the famous “Flower Hole” at SentryWorld, Wisconsin is full of surprises.
