Sunday River
About Sunday River
Sunday River in Newry, Maine, is one of the state’s golf and ski meccas. It is a sprawling, year-round recreational paradise with multiple hotels and inns, restaurants and outdoor activities. The Grand Summit Hotel sits in the heart of the resort, while the Snow Cap Inn is just a short walk away from the slopes. The Jordan Hotel is the resort’s most upscale lodging and ideal for golfers, sitting adjacent to the Sunday River Golf Club. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the golf course across dramatic elevation changes through the backwoods of the Sunday River Valley. Mountain biking, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, scenic chair lift rides and discovering swimming holes in Sunday River and the Androscoggin River are other perfect summer pursuits. The Sunday River Outfitters offer courses in kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and archery. The Jordan Spa, Gem Theater, Maine Mineral and Gem Museum and River Lanes Bowling are available when the rain or cooler temperatures come.Facts

Reviews
Great design, conditioning a bit lacking.
I played here about 10 times last season, but this was the first time this season. Greens were very good, comparable to last year. Fairways were in poor shape, with lots of black areas - much worse than last year. Tees were in pretty good shape but for some reason they were lots of dime-sized rocks on the teas. They must have top-dressed them with poorly sifted sand. The fairway grass was longer than it typically is and the grass on the tees was also a bit longer than normal. Another change is the golf cart gps screens were removed from all the carts. That was a great feature and it's quite a disappointment that they're gone. About half of the on course water jugs were empty.
A positive is they're spruced up many of the bunkers with some new sand, almost white. It's very dense and heavy like crushed marble or something and as a result you can spin the cover off the ball on greenside bunker shots if you keep your speed up, and the firm lies make fairway bunker shots easier.
Starter was a very pleasant, helpful guy. Don't recall them having an actual starter last year.
Overall it's a great course and very much worth playing. Remember to play the appropriate tee for your skill level. I play to a 5 and the black tees were a bit more than I could handle given the soft conditions and wind, and while playing pretty well struggled with 83. Probably should have played the blues. If you are the average golfer move way up or you will shoot considerably higher than you're accustomed to.
Was good not its not
Played Sunday River yesterday and today and we were very disappointed in it's condition. The fairways are a mess but greens seem to be ok. We played Sat & Sunday mornings and the restaurant was not even open ( couldn't get even a cup of coffee). Staff was ok but not real friendly.
This was not the first time we played Sunday River in the last 10 years, we have played 8 times and this was very disappointing compared to the other 8. Sunday River is a magnificent venue which has fallen into disrepair, its need emergency TLC. I hope that the next time I travel to Maine I can play this course and give it a 5 star rating because right not, it's a 1 star.
PS we played Sugerloaf and that is still a 5 Star course.
Fantastic
Hands down the best mountain course I have ever played. The slope rating is 150 from the tips at 7,130 yards on this fabulous Robert Trent Jones track. You are either hitting it uphill or downhill with some tricky lies and testing greens. There are many great views in the mountainous surroundings. Keeping it in the short stuff is a plus. This is a must play if you are in the area
Gorgeous fall array great golf
Beautiful weather fantastic fall colors and views and terrific course conditions made this a memorable round at Sunday River golf. Took a friend for her first time and she claimed this is now her favorite course in Maine. And all this for less than a cart fee for members thru Golf Now!
Autumn golf in Sunday River, Maine is breath-taking!
Wow, this course completely epitomizes what fall golf in Maine should be. The log cabin clubhouse and pro shop as you drive in fits appropriately into the side of the large mountain that this golf course is built upon. The driving range was well-manicured and practice putting green was true to the course.
However, the views of this course are what makes it so incredible. The pictures truly don't do it justice. More than half of the holes had 180 degree views of the Mahoosuc mountain range. The views came on many of the elevated tee boxes or greens that were raised high above the fairway. It was hard for our group of 4 not to take pictures on every single hole as every tee box felt like a postcard!
The Sunday River layout was spectacular with lots of variety and elevation change throughout the course. This however, creates for a very difficult course as there isnt a lot of room for forgiveness. Anything off the fairways can quickly disappear into heavily wooded areas and extreme drop offs. You can't be long on any green here either as we saw one hole that had a back pin location that was only 6 feet from a red stake!
The course was in perfect shape and the greens were rolling extremely fast. I loved playing this course and I hope it's not the last time I get the chance to come here. Fall golf is Maine including Sunday River should be on every golfers bucket list.
Stunningly beautiful challenge..
This is the best, most scenic course I have ever played. Stunning views on not one, but nearly all of the holes. The layout is excellent. Many uphill/downhill holes. Large contoured greens and numerous, well placed bunkers. I prefer the course to Sugarloaf, which is also an excellent, Robert Trent Jones Jr. creation. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Sunday River to anyone except beginners and novices. It is a challenge.
Sunday River
Beautiful course in the mountains. Some of the cart paths and fairways are very steep, so you have to stay on your toes. Staff was very friendly.
Beautiful Mountain Course
I would have loved to see this course being built. Expertly carved out of mountains of Maine with beautiful views, well laid out holes with plenty of challenges. It was very windy when we played, so our scores were not what we expected, but the experience was well worth the ride.
incredible greens!
Absolutely beautiful golf course. Very challenging and the greens were incredible. Bring all of your green reading skills or there will be plenty of 3 and 4 putts. Could not have been more fun!
Great greens, great views.
Only had time for one round during my trip, and I'm glad I chose Sunday River. It's a very challenging course with many elevation changes, so you have to be good with your distance control on approach shots.
The greens were nice, with large surfaces and lots of break. Very challenging to read, I misread a lot of the breaking putts.
I played with rented clubs, and the driver was in bad shape, so if you are only getting one shot at this place I don't recommend using their clubs.
1st time in Maine
The wife and I originally decided to make this a 'golfless' trip for the 1st time in years...When we realized how far out we were & this was the #1 rated course there, we decided to rent/play...Would've been a better idea to have golf shoes..Course was good, staff was very friendly, we had a good time. If in the area Sunday River should be played.
Play this course!!!
It doesn't get any better than Sunday River. The layout and views are amazing. Everything was in very good shape except for a few brown spots on a couple of fairways. Expected seeing it hasn't rained in quite a while. Just cause you get on the green in regulation doesn't mean a automatic par. You must really use your head and read the greens right. Staff was super friendly from the cart guy, front desk, and bar. If you live in the east or are here on vacation, you must play this course if you get a chance. I've played many courses including the best there is and this ranks right up there.
6 HOUR ROUND OF GOLF?!
This course should be called MONDAY River because nobody likes Monday. My dad booked a tee time for us for my birthday, and I am very disappointed. The greens were awful, even though over the phone they said that they were stupendous. The pace of play was horrible!! After nine holes, taking 3 hours, there were 3 foursomes waiting to tee off at 10. We walked off the course because slow rounds are really boring!! When we asked for a nine hole refund, the guy said "No! You got a good price on Golf Now." Thank you, Sunday River, for ruining a kid's birthday.
6 hour round?
Actually, it was 3 hours for 9 holes and the 10th hole had 3 foursomes waiting to tee off. We walked off. The guy in the pro shop basically said "tough, you got a good price through golf now.com" and wouldn't offer any refund of any kind when I asked. He couldn't have cared less. Actually, I had to go find him - he was outside smoking. The course is a nice track but I'll never go back. I don't recommend you going either, unless 6 hour rounds and poor service are your thing.
Beautiful track
A beautiful golf course with GREAT views! This is a challenging course but a fantastic time. I adopted the just enjoy the beautiful weather (75 degrees and no bugs) mentality early. If you hit the fairways you should be ok. Great place to have a golf weekend. We even brought the wives and sent them to the spa while we played. Everyone wins! If you get the chance you should get up there and play, you won't be sorry.
Love Sunday River
Another great trip to Sunday River Golf Club (we started coming in 2007). Can't beat the views, the golf and the people. Special place.

There's a reason this is "#1 in Maine"
Outstanding course; exceptional use of natural terrain. Breathtaking vistas, beautiful course. Great facility.
Rainy day day
Did full review of course after we played 18 on 8/12/15. We were able to play earlier than our scheduled tee tee because of impeding rain. It actually started raining as we teed off. Got nine holes in and the pro, Greg Perry, was able to accommodate us with our second nine two days later. He was very friendly and helpful.
