Don't Be Fooled
I don't know about Sidewinder, but as for Dinosaur, I recommend that for the same money you should be able to play some other course you like in the Phoenix area 2 or 3 times.
I don't understand what all the fuss over this course is about. The scorecard does not add up the yardages, and the reason seems to be that it has 6 par 3s. There seemed to be weeks of unrepaired ballmarks (dents) in the greens, and at least two-thirds of the pins were on the very edges of the greens, many of which were quite large. As if the game and this course weren't challenging enough already. When I complained to golf course staff about all the edgey pins they said, "We hear that all the time."
And for all this, not to mention a joke of a driving range (mats), they like to get a buck thirty-five or more with seemingly very little discounting. Yes, it's pretty and you get to drive a golf cart through the foothills of the Superstition Mountains, and in fairness it does have a number of very nice golf holes, but to me, overall, this is an overly expensive, very indifferent golf product. They fooled me once. It won't happen again.
Nice Course
Really liked this course! A good test of golf skills. Front 9 pace of play was perfect at 2 hrs but when we got to the back 9, it slowed right down for some reason. Took 2 hrs 45 to do back 9. Homes lining some of the fairways can be a little intimidating but fairways still wide enough. GPS systems on carts ok but could have provided more info on distance to hazards and doglegs. I would score much better on my next round.
Nice track
This round was played on a great day, on a good course, but it was at a slow pace. Group in front was always waiting to tee off on the next hole when we pulled up. Nice views of mountains in distance and enough variety in tee lengths to meet the needs of all golfers.
Not too Shabby
Our day was fantastic. My wife, an LPGA teaching pro, shot a 73 from the whites. I had to keep pace, and also shot a 73 from the whites. Our pairing group was a great couple from Canada, and even they couldn't believe what happened on 14. I put a pretty good swing on it, but didn't expect a back spin roll, RIGHT INTO THE CUP. It wasn't my first ace, but definitely my favorite. I love Gold Canyon, and I can't wait til next year when we return.
AWESOME !!!
This is a must play….Dinosaur course!
Unbelievable par 3's with elevations out of this world. Fantastic course! Best be hitting your tee shots well!
too far
This is a course pretty far off the beaten track for those in central Phoenix. It is an older course, mats on the range, and looks rather dated in the accommodations. The course itself is harder than one might think. It plays far longer, despite 6 par 3s, and the greens were very inconsistent, some very fast, others slow. They need work.
Even at that, it is a pretty course and while I would not play it again because of its location, it's worth a round if you are in the area.
Another great day at a first class course
We have played here 4 times in the last month- it is very good value with rounds at approx. $75. The course is very picturesque, well laid out, easy to play from forward tees, and quite challenging from the longer tees. We played last round on a Wed at 10am, and finished in under 4 hours. You will not be disappointed.
Well maintained
Scenic course, well maintained. Service excelent. Good working GPS on the cart. Worth the 40 minute drive from central Phoenix and or Scottsdale
Fabulous course
One of the best courses we have played this winter!! Pace of play was excellent. We definitely will play again!!
Great course
We were the first group out and set a good pace coming in 25 minutes under the recommendation. It helped to have a member playing with us to point us in the right direction. Excellent condition, challenging but fair. Would play it again and recommend others play it. Walking is not allowed on Dinosaur.
Spectacular course!
The best course I've played world wide (still looking to get to Scotland this summer). Views are spectacular, staff was engaging and helpful, pace of play was just over 3 hours for me as a single. Players waved me through. I was able to get a decent price on line the day before my tee time thanks to golfnow. Really worth playing. I plan to play every weekend I'm here and more if I can.
Super Sidewinder
A very good course layout with a few elevated tees, wide fairways and fast, but true roll greens.
Fantastic Course
The views were incredible. The majority of holes were very strong. Fairly generous for drives but greens were well protected by false fronts. ,bunkers and many mounds I probably have played 20 different courses in Phoenix and this is number 1. Great vistas from elevated tees. Really strong par 3s Got great price on golfnow as single $60
A MUST PLAY COURSE
This course is a gem. The scenery is wonderful set in the mountains, the course is well laid out and is in good shape, and the price is well worth the trip. This course must be played at least once.
Spectacular Course!
An incredible course. The most beautiful I have ever golfed on. Interesting. Challenging. And beautiful. We spent lots of time just taking in the scenery. A challenging course for me. I lost lots of balls. They protect the hole with lots of bunkers. Good fun.
Great views
Very nice course. Great views from some of the higher elevation holes.
Nice course - no Marshals
We have played this course before and thoroughly enjoyed it. The greens are flawless. We were matched up with another couple who play regularity and they were very nice. The front nine was not bad. We waited but played in a little over 2 hours. It was quite another story on the back nine. We waited every hole. One hole we waited 20,minutes! It spoiled an otherwise beautiful day of golf. Where are the marshals?
I hate it when courses over fill courses to squeeze an extra dollar. It is false economy as you will find golfer a moving to courses who value their guests playing experience.
Nice course but a long drive.
Course condition was excellent. Elevation changes were neat. Check in facilities need improvement. Parking is not good. No drinking water on the course and a bottle of water is $3.50. Bring your own.
Review of Sidewinder
Great golf course. Would recommend you play it!!
Course is not long but has many challenges. The views ARE incredible!!
Outstanding
Played many, many courses in Arizona over the years and Gold Canyon Dinosaur course is rated number one on my books. Lots of elevation changes with no two holes alike, spectacular views from anywhere on the course. Every hole has its challenges, mostly generous fairways but those traps and fast greens keep you honest.
Dear Mr. O’Meara,
Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience. I’m glad that you enjoyed the challenge, beauty and hole variety of our Dinosaur Mountain golf course. I'm sorry if some of the hole locations were in difficult positions. We have at least four holes with very undulating greens and it can be difficult to find a perfect hole location 7 days a week.
As far as our scorecard is concerned we removed the total yardage approximately 10 years ago. The reason for this is to promote players to play the "correct" set of tees for their ability. The total yardage on the Dinosaur Mountain course is very deceiving. For instance it measure 6,561 yards from the back tees. Needless to say we had a number of players playing the back tees when in reality they should have been playing the middle tees. So instead of putting the total yardage on our scorecard we replaced it with recommended handicap which has greatly helped our speed of play. We've also added mixed tees that are a combination of tees which are quite popular, challenging and fun to play.
And lastly to address your concern about our driving range. Our driving range was built in 1982 along with 9 holes of golf. The range is bordered on both sides by the Sidewinder golf course and thus it is landlocked. There is no room for expansion. The original grass tee would only accommodate up to 18 stations. After one week of rotation there would be very little if any grass left. We do over 65,000 rounds of golf annually and it would be virtually impossible to grow and maintain any type of turf. With that in mind we have invested over $7,500 in the best artificial golf mat on the market which turned out to be the best possible solution for our scenario. Ballybunion rated one of the best courses in the world does not have a grass driving range but rather artificial mats and Lahinch also rated one of the top courses in the world does not have a driving range at all, just a practice putting green and chipping area.
Thank you again for your comments and I hope we were able to address your issues.
