Reviews
Challenging course but well worth it!
830am tee time, so there was a slight frost warning which meant cart path only - but only for approx. 4 holes. Course was in great condition. They had workers all over the course keeping it in good condition. Bunkers in good shape - and there are plenty of bunkers (and I saw many of them up close!). I rank this course in my top 3 in the entire Phoenix valley area. Pro shop people, restaurant, starter, cart guys, beverage girl, etc. everyone top notch. Good practice area and putting green also. Tip: Do like me, drop the wife off at the casino (Harrah's Ak-Chin) and come play Souther Dunes! Winning combo!!
Great Course
The course is in great shape. The fairways are green and lush, and the greens are well mowed and consistent. The bunkers are abundant and they protect the greens and require good course management for a good score. the course is pretty open, but the bunkers and waste areas are the ones that protect the course from big hitters. Very enjoyable. Highly recommended.
Must play Phoenix course
Southern Dunes is a phenomenal track. Fun layout, great conditions and awesome amenities. Better than most if not all the great courses in Scottsdale for 1/3 the price.
Pace of play an issue
Course Marshall could have sorted out a better than 5 hour round as one foursome was the problem for a bunch of foursomes
Challenging
Love this course. You have to hit the ball straight. There are over 100 traps. The course condition was good but it was cart path only, which I knew when I scheduled the round.
course
very good course, nice layout and conditioning.
only nit is women tee boxes are an afterthought. On several, looks like the just put a couple of tee markers in the fairway. Needs some work
Bunkers never raked!
Good day but please do something about raking the bunkers
Cart path only
Dropped bags, parked car, checked in, paid for fees, went to driving range, putted, and then got to starter to be told it was cart path only. No one said a word about this until we were in the cart ready to tee off. As a 72 year old with a bad back just after a series of epidural pain shots I asked if there was an exemption or if I could get a blue handicap flag. Never a problem at other courses, even during over-seeding. Not here. Flatly refused, even after talking to head pro. I had no choice but to walk and play and after 18 holes the pain was unbearable. I was with others so I battled through. After observing the course there was no need to have cart path only in my humble opinion as it was in excellent shape and the fairways were completely grown out and solid. At the very least the 90 degree rule would have been more than acceptable. They've lost me as a customer. The course is extremely contrived to be as difficult as possible with more bunkers than a WWII battlefield, so if you're not a straight shooter these narrow dog leg fairways will eat you up. If you don't have a 5 index or better don't play here. There are way too many better courses and much more user friendly ones in the Phoenix area to not have to play here.
Today
Great course. Only negative is silly women tee boxes. Looks like they Just set them up in the fairway at times.
Weekly golfer
The course is great. The layout is challenging with LOTS of sand. The course was cart path only due over seeding, which made pace of play slower. Overall, it was a great round with good course conditions.
GPS didn’t work entire round
Great people but marshals should stop and check that all is well with players. Our gps didn’t work fore 1/2 the round & cart path only made the round too much work to be fun...
Super fun course!
Just a blast to play. Lots of sandtraps, but all in excellent condition. A course that makes you think.
Return visit, still a good course
This course is on our banker list. It's a bit of a drive away from our Hotel in Scottsdale but worth it. There was a tournament on the day we played so there was some pretty mean pin positions but the course we in great shape. We booked an 11am time however they let us start early, which we good. It's just a nice and varied course and I'd recommend this track to any visiting golfers. Drinks and food on the Pati after, seemed a little steep but that's for you to decide. We'll play here again when we return.
one of the best courses in the PHX area.
Fantastic challenge, friendly staff. Quiet and inexpensive in the summer.
Course Needs to be Re-Sloped
Fun course to play but it is waaay under sloped. With 100+ traps, some right in the middle of the fairway, and darn near every green very well protected, a 118 slope from the whites is far from accurate. I'd put it much closer to 130. Summer rates are fantastic at around $45 but I'm not sure I'd shell out the $140 or so it would take in prime season.
One of my favorites
All went well today. Last week had a horrible starter who put a 4 some in front of us on 10 after we had just left nine green. Holding us up for 10 minutes. He told us to take a break and go to the bathroom. Very rude!!!! Changed our pace of play. Reported to pro... hope he talked with the rude starter.
They were an afterthought. The course was build as a private male only club.
