Great challenge
I’ve played the course several times. Always in great shape. Staff is great. New carts. Bottled water on several holes if needed. Great layout. Pace of play was just over 4 hours. Considering having to play out of several bunkers we made good time. Lots of bunkers make it a good challenge and they actually have sand in them unlike a lot of other courses. Would definitely recommend the course.
Very consistent
I've played Southern Dunes 5 times during different visits to Arizona. All aspects of the course and facilities are consistently excellent. I've always had a great experience. The course is challenging but not crazy difficult. There is lots of sand to avoid. The bunkers are in excellent condition with very good sand. The greens are not too fast. The tees are consistently in great shape.
Great Golf course!
This is a fun great golf course to play. Every aspect of it. The only knock is the inconsistency of sand in bunkers. But they have spend over a million dollars for new sand after last October storms, but that didn’t cover all of them. There are a ton of them so understandable. Hopefully they will do the rest of them.
A must golf course to play!
Great Troon Course
Great track and highly recommend.. Lots of character and lots of trade winds . Shot makers course and worth the trip out of the city.
Greens were trues and fast and boxes were awesome. Fairways were good and bunkers a little off from all the rain..
worthwhile
Must play
Beautiful, challenging, fun, great condition...this place has it all. A must play for someone looking for a great experience without the typical crazy high rates that are the norm this time a year.
Ak-Chin iIs A Must Play
This course always impresses. I have played this course several times and I always look forward to playing and bringing out of town guests here. It is in fantastic condition from tee box to green. The layout is awesome and presents a challenge to any caliber of golfer. I would recommend this course to anyone.
Lovely afternoon round
I decided to play this course as a single spontaneously on a monday afternoon. The ride from Phoenix takes a little time, but it´s well worth it.
I was paired with a Canadian who plays this course regularly, and it turned out to be a great afternoon, playing golf and having a lot of fun.
The course is quite challenging, there are bunkers everywhere.
You can, however, choose from a lot of tee boxes, which makes it a lot more playable for anyone.
The only small criticism comes from the bunkers being very different, some being very fluffy, some being almost like concrete. That makes it really hard to get into a rhythm.
Apart from that, the course is in perfect condition.
The fairways are nice and green, fair to play. The greens are fast and in very good shape.
Pace of play was relaxed and still good.
I highly recommend this course.
Great Course in Phoenix Area
I took the trip south of PHX to play this course. It is a great deal and awesome course. Greens rolled pure and fast. I will be back next time in the area.
Ak-Chin Breeze
Headlines; Great staff; great course; great time - 5 stars.
Arrived at 08.20 for an 08.50 tee got away at 08.45. We let two two-ball groups play through on the front nine and finished in 4 hours 30 walking. Saw no-one else for the whole round.
A truly great course, good tees, fairways, good size greens running at 10 with very tricky breaks, bunkers a little variable plenty of sand but some very dry and light and some damp and heavy. There are no tricks on this course but you have to pick your way through the bunkers and know when to take them on and when to just lay up. Great variety of hole length, shape and challenge. The par threes are a real challenge, with great variety of length and some big forced carries which make holding the green difficult. We had a 20mph westerly wind for the whole back nine, meaning that we had to deal with winds that were helping, hurting and across us - what a great layout.
The course staff are all unfailingly friendly, helpful and welcoming.
Is a really nice course to walk, but it would be an added bonus if the course management would cut some walking tracks from green to tee - nothing fancy just a cleared path. Is a shame to have to walk the cart path quite so often.
My only gripe is the provision of water on the course. Every second hole there's an ice cooler with free plastic bottles of water. This means that every year Troon throw away tens of thousands of one time use plastic bottles - not cool. Give us re-usable bottles and water coolers to refill from.
Yes I'd recommend this course and I'll definitely be back.
Good day with good people
Course was in good shape as always well worth the money
Always a great place
Course in great shape with the Saguaro Am a few days ago. Sand was sand, not dirt like many AZ courses. Fast pace. Lots of thinking shots. And, killer food in the clubhouse.
Southern Dunes is one of the best courses in the Phoenix area
I've played all the courses available to guests in the valley, and Southern dunes continues to impress as one of the more challenging courses for a single digit handicap. The course has more than the average number of bunkers and sand hazards, but it's fairly easy to avoid them if necessary. Greens fees are always lower than the other top courses, including Whirl Wind which is 30 minute away.
This course will challenge your skills
This was my first time playing here and my overall experience was fabulous. The entire staff is extremely friendly, helpful and professional making you feel welcome from the start. The off course facilities from the practice range through the chipping and putting area are in superb condition. The pro shop, restaurant/bar and outside seating area are open and inviting, well designed and very comfortable.
Now for the course itself. A word of advise, if the weak part of your game is getting out of the bunker practice a lot before you take on the challenging but fun layout. The course is in excellent shape considering the flood damage that occurred just 10 weeks ago and is a testament to the excellence of the superintendent and his crew. Check out the before and after photos outside the pro shop to see what I mean. The design will challenge your shot making abilities if you want to steer clear of the numerous bunkers on every hole. The fairways are lush and full with generous landing areas off the tee. The bunkers run the gamut from large and flat along the fairways to steep and challenging guarding the greens while the sand is fine but easily played from. The greens are in excellent shape, fast and true with challenging reads but large enough to allow ample options for your approach shots. My son and I, both 18-20 handicappers, found this layout to be fun to play and a challenge all at the same time and throughly enjoyed our round. We highly recommend this course to anyone.
Under Repair
Like many courses in the area, they had major course flooding in October. They are addressing the damaged areas and issues. The staff is great, the grill area is great... they are charging a higher fee than the course warrants under its current state... even the repaired areas are below average at best... the course is roughly a $60.00 course at best under its current condition... would recommend this course all day when its in premium condition... however its currently below average, even with the on going repairs...
Tees, fairways and greens are in decent shape... some issues here and there but mostly above average... bunkers sustained most of the damage and are unplayable... the ones that have been repaired have an over abundance of sand in them and are not to the normal standard...
Not a good place, poor value for the $$
The course was listed as 90 degrees, but is cart path only for a couple of months. We were luck to finish in slightly over 5 hours. Other than the greens and fairways, everything is ground under repair. Most all of the traps are closed and hard as roc or full of equipment. They are unplayable and hard as rock, so if you go in on good luck finding your ball they just bounce away.
The mowing has left a lot of cut grass on the fairways, so can loose a ball in the fairway.
Don’t expect a quick early round, and recent flooding causing major disruption.
I booked the first tee time available at 0720 in order to get away early and have a fast round. That and the next 43 tee times showed 1-4 players available so I was expecting a quick round. 2 problems with that...the starter told me that they always put out a 4-ball to start with (at 0712) so that any quicker groups don’t catch up the ground staff preparing the course ahead. Secondly I was only told that it was strictly cart path only on arrival at the course. No mention of that whatsoever on GolfNow and had I known that I wouldn’t have booked. Finally due to recent flooding there are workers all over the course who are basically ignoring the golfers so it’s noisy and dangerous for them. A poor experience and Ak-Chin need to publicise the cart path only rule and ongoing works as others courses fairly do.
