Tale of Two Nines
Weather played an unexpected role in our round at Camelback CC in Scottsdale this week. While the mid-90s temperature and bright sun drained us somewhat on the front nine, the unusual wind and blowing conditions that surfaced mid-round created real challenges on the back nine - with balls rolling off the greens and tee shots being knocked down into blustery conditions. Weather aside, Camelback offers a challenging spread that will test both your length and short game, with many long par 4s and several well bunkered greens. Approach shots are key, particularly on the 9th and 18th holes - long par 5's with water in play on both holes leading right up to the front of both greens. All of the staff, from the starter to the cart boys to the folks in the pro shop went above and beyond with their level of customer service. The restaurant also provides lovely views of both the 9th and 18th holes with many local craft beers and tasty bites on the menu. Definitely a must see and must play if you are visiting the greater Scottsdale area .
Everyone was friendly and professional. Andy, the head pro, was working in the shop and he could not have been nicer....ready to answer all our questions and listening to our comments. Course was in great shape and therapeutic to play....like being in a park.
One of the best courses I have played on
Amazing course. !!! Quiet, beautiful, nicely laid out and well maintained. First time on course, I will definitely play it again
Before the overseed
I knew that I was booking this reservation one day prior to overseed. The greens, IMO, were a little slow and I could be aggressive. I’ve visited here numerous times and was excited to finally play this course. Staff was great! I’ll be back!!
Very Disappointed
I have played this course over 50 times in my life and these were the worst conditions I have ever seen out there. The Tee boxes were so shaggy i thought i was in a Scooby Doo espisode. Then the fairways weren't much better. I backed my drives up many times and we had a guy who hit line drives he wouldn't get more than 3 feet of roll with his. The greens were the worst part. Looks like they were 1-2 weeks out of punching but no warning on the booking. Very very bouncy. Not smooth whatsoever. And the pace of the greens were very slow. Maybe a 7/8. There is not need for these bad conditions. There are plenty of courses in town who have way better conditions for the money. Legacy Golf resort is 25 bucks right now and has WAY better conditions.
Don't waste your money here. Read up on all of the reviews and go elsewhere. Maybe after overseed they MIGHT be better
Weeds galore and rough greens
There were large areas of fairway, fringe, and rough covered in crab grass and nutsedge. The greens were recently punched and very bumpy. A home by the 17th tee box was blaring their music.
Condition and atmosphere on this source is more in line with a $45 greens fee, not 2X that.
Great course slow pace
The course was in great condition and the staff was very friendly. There was a very slow group ahead of us and no marshal to speed them up. We had to wait on the tee 10-20 minutes the entire back 9.
No heads up
Greens were punched with no notice to golfer on golf now, still 90 to play yet the greens were just sandy and bumpy?!? Like the course but you should give your customers a heads up when it comes to things like that because it ruined the hole day.
Not my favorite
The staff was friendly enough but the carts were a nightmare ( both, as we had to trade one out after the 2nd hole, no parking brake ). On the carts there were also consistent discrepancies on the GPS devices. The distance readings were way off and it kept sending notifications that we were off course and that we were off pace, both of which were inaccurate. At one point the cart locked up indicating that we were off course and "to reverse out of the area", which we attempted to do but it wouldn't budge. We ended up having to push it about 30 yards in "lock up" mode. Pretty frustrating.
Bad greens and sand traps
I called before I booked to check o status of the course. The golf shop told me the greens were plugged 3 weeks ago and in great shape. They were done more recently and in terrible shape. Most of the sand traps were un-playable. I would have gone to another course if I was told the truth about the terrible shape of the greens and bunkers. At least the starter should have informed us the th bunkers were under repair. Bad form Camelback!!! The fairways were in great shape.
