Course was in marginal condition.
We were very disappointed in the poor quality of the course. When asked of the staff, they excused it to its recent opening after punching the greens and fairways. Why not disclose that when reservations are made? One hole would be soaked, with constant need to place the ball somewhere a bit drier. Then the next hole would be a patchwork of recently laid sod. We played with a member who expressed the same dismay. He said the other course (same price) was far superior in its condition .
The pro shop was nice, the practice area was fine, but overall, I would not recommend this course at this time.
Very Nice Course
I'm a repeat customer. Love these courses. Laid out in the desert, on the outskirts of the hub-bub, these two courses--Cattail and Devil's Claw--have become some of my favorite courses. You travel through a nice desert environment the entire time you are on this course. The layout of the course is a challenge for all level of player, with the conditions as good in the summer as in the winter. On the day I played, there were some areas under repair, and the greens had been recently punched and sanded, but that is the nature of the course superintendant--they get on top of it before it becomes a complaint.
Lack of ability to cope with human accidents
In today 's course, there was an accident where a beverage cart was overturned and a female driver was laid under the cart. My friend and I lifted the cart, called 911 to catch the incident, and the other player called the golf course office and announced the news. After that, there were only two employees, but they did not ask for the situation at the time of the accident and did not say thank you to the customers who helped. My friend and I ran as soon as we saw the cart fall. My friend, who was a bit uncomfortable with the legs, ran with me. However, the employee walked off the cart slowly to the scene of the accident, and his facial expression was full of irritation. Anyone who enjoys golf can suffer injuries or accidents. At the golf course here, I think I should probably think I can die.
Beautiful golf course!! Great challenge! Beat conditions I’ve played this year so far!!
Always a great place to play
Whirlwind (Managed by Troon Golf), is typically always in very good to great condition. Yesterday was no exception, tee boxes, fairways and greens were in great shape. Will be back soon to play again.
Great course
Bunkers are deep, great course will be back a again
Staff is ruthless
Love the course but they always treat you like an amateur there
Recently aerated.
I have played here several times over the years, Course is always in good, to great shape. Just depends on the time of year and over seeding or aeration. This was one of those times but, it did not effect play or the beauty of the course.
Fun track!
Great condition! Staff and facilities are excellent!
Phoenix Top Ten List
I realize the title may be a bit high given all of the high quality golf courses in Phoenix. It may have been that stars aligned but what a great track. I enjoy courses with generous hitting areas and big, smooth greens. The course was in immaculate condition, so the rate was great for a course of this quality. I played with some fun people (Jim, Lexi and Emily) that made it even more enjoyable. Supposedly the rates are really good in the summer and the conditions stay solid, so I am going back for sure. My only critique is that I sensed the golf shop staff may have a bit of a tude., which unfortunately happens at high echelon courses. That's only a few minutes of the experience, so don't let it stop you.
Incredible condition
The combination of fairways, greens, and weather made this for the absolute best condition I have ever seen at Devil’s Claw. There was a large tournament in the a.m. of the day I played, yet there was virtually no divots in the fairway, which is a tribute to the quality of golfers as well as the quality of the course.
Excellent salad for lunch and just an overall impressive day at Whirlwind Golf Club
Good course, slow play
Course was in good condition and layout was good. Line up at first tee box for early morning round didn’t make a whole lot of sense, considering there was a starter & marshal(s) present leading to a 4:40 round.
Enjoyable round
Love the layout. Variety of holes. Made you think off the tee. Great staff. Good practice area. Decent condition although the sand traps did not have enough sand in them and the greens were a bit shaggy and somewhat slow. Clubhouse food very good. Overall an excellent experience. Will be back.
Great course
What a nice place to play. Top notch facilities and staff was great. Fairways were an appropriate width and bunkers were well placed.
Marvelous day of golf
A layout that presents unique shots and strategy on every hole. Course is in great shape with the exception of the bunkers which are now mostly missing sand. Lost a couple of shots when my wedge hit the sand perfectly 2" behind the ball and bounced off of the hard surface a skulled the ball over the center field fence. Other than the traps, exceptional across the board.
Super friendly and helpful staff outdoors, inside the pro shop a bit aloof and standoffish. we'll write this off to "they are just shy".
If you are like me and don't hit every fairway, bring extra balls as finding your ball in that desert is not going to happen very often.
Lunch afterward was exceptional with a great staff and excellent food.
Beautiful Desert Course
We played a wonderful round of golf. The course is in excellent condition. Greens rolled well, the layout was challenging for the three of us, and we all have varying amounts of experience. Beautiful trees and views. Saw some wildlife - coyote ran across the green after we finished putting, rabbits, roadrunners, etc. No snakes.
Definitely will come back!
Great experience all around
Been golfing monthly in the Phoenix area and Whirlwind has become a favorite. Excellent conditions, a fair challenge, and very good bang for the buck. Played an afternoon round and finished in under 4 hours. Easy access to airport yet you feel like you're in a quiet, remote area.
Marshal the pace of play
I actually really like this course. Unfortunately they put us out in the afternoon after a junior tourney. The little brats (we saw their antics) have not been taught anything about pace of play and nor did the golf club enforce it which was absurd. Frankly given the circumstances, they simply should not have put us out on the course.
Having said that they were very fair on the refund.
Unfortunate.
Great track
I found the course to be in outstanding condition. The greens were fast and consistent. I liked the layout, and it was challenging, with it's fairway bunkers in play on most holes, which influenced club selection of the tees on short par 4's. I will play this course again next time I am in the Phoenix area.
