Fantastic desert course
First day that Devil’s Claw course was opened after overseeding & redoing the sand traps. The course, as anticipated, was in perfect condition. The sand traps had loose sand at least six inches deep in all of the bunkers. The only thing that I could find fault with was that their large putting green at the clubhouse was kind of burnt out and fast compared to the actual course greens that were lush and not tightly cut. Therefore it took a few holes to determine the actual speed of the greens.
First time experience
So the course is great and the staff are friendly. My biggest complaint is that the ranger at the start forced every group to play as a 4 some. I've been asked before if I was willing to play with a stranger when a course is busy and sometimes yes and sometimes no. But when I'm forced to take an extra person to a 3some, I'm gonna be displeased. If your course is overbooked that is your problem not mine. I should not be required to add to my teams just because your wanting to maximize your profit. So, unfortunately, even though the course was gorgeous and the staff friendly, I will probably not play here again. Your supply demand issues are yours not the players.
Worth your time
Devil's Claw is a very challenging layout and plays quite long from the gold tees. Probably too difficult for a higher handicap player. Several of the par fours play uphill and long, and a fairway wood or hybrid will be needed, even for a better player. Par threes are very reasonable and shouldn't be a problem. Par fives are very enjoyable. This is a course that the player needs to think his or her way around, and can't be taken lightly. I would recommend it for a better player, but a short hitter will have a long day. This is a Troon Management course, and as such is well done.
Outstanding Golf Round
First time playing Whirlwind. Very impressive golf course. Fairways and greens in excellent shape. All staff very friendly and accommodating. Great lunch-try the Mexican Cubano sandwich with onion rings. I'll return.
Premium level resort course
Beautiful and challenging course set in wide open desert and no homes nearby. I received attentive friendly service from the moment I arrived. Booked solo through Golfnow and was placed with a group of three great players. Free balls on practice range, GPS in cart, beautiful landscaping , and excellent course conditions. Features elevated tees and greens, some slope and challenging hole placements on green, and enough sand in bunkers to allow a proper out. This place is popular so expect sold out schedule and therefore 4-4.5 hour pace. Enjoy!!
Great time
Two great courses
Greens rolled true
Awesome staff
Views
Best views I played in the area. Tee boxes, fairways, greens conditions were incredible. Very well taken care of. They accommodated a group of five night problem. Definitely coming back.
Fantastic Course
Live in Gilbert, haven't played this course before today. Love it .... staff was awesome, the course was fun and challenging. Over a great course.Golf carts kinda bother me (If you stray of course, forward is disabled and you have to back up), but living in the desert I understand it is for our safety.
Love This Course
I have reviewed this course and its sister course--Cattail--on prior occasions. The fairways, greens and amenities are all top notch even in the hottest days of summer in Arizona.
Is there a Management issue here?
8/11/2019 - All sand traps are being redone and are considered grounds under repair. Most of tee boxes and large sections of fairways and areas around the greens have been resodded and are not recovering well. But from booking to check-in to the send off from the starter, not a mention of the poor conditions (other troon courses have called me after a booking when greens were punched to let me know the course is not up to the typical quality standards-not so here)
Furthermore pace of play was the worst I've ever experienced, not because of slow play but rather management overloaded the course by stuffing 25 foursomes in front of our 6 AM group. Our round was 5 1/2 hours with 1 1/12 of that just in that last 3 holes! Management should have never sold these morning tee times if they were going to do this. While this could have been an Isolated miscalculation, the Members we were playing with indicated it has become more common lately.
I would recommend passing on this course until you see some turnaround in these reviews. I know I'll be taking my money elsewhere for now.
Getting close...
All sandtraps are being re-done and were out of play with free drops today. But rest of course was in really good shape. Cant wait to play this course in 4 to 6 weeks. Should be amazing.
course in great summer condition, but bring your A game around greens
Condition + Rate
Awful condition for the current rate. Have played the course 20+ times and never seen it like this.
Greens are so bumpy any putt outside of a foot is not going in.
Fairways are half dead.
Played in a foursome and the other 3 were contemplating asking for a 50% refund due to conditions.
Course was in marginal condition.
We were very disappointed in the poor quality of the course. When asked of the staff, they excused it to its recent opening after punching the greens and fairways. Why not disclose that when reservations are made? One hole would be soaked, with constant need to place the ball somewhere a bit drier. Then the next hole would be a patchwork of recently laid sod. We played with a member who expressed the same dismay. He said the other course (same price) was far superior in its condition .
The pro shop was nice, the practice area was fine, but overall, I would not recommend this course at this time.
Very Nice Course
I'm a repeat customer. Love these courses. Laid out in the desert, on the outskirts of the hub-bub, these two courses--Cattail and Devil's Claw--have become some of my favorite courses. You travel through a nice desert environment the entire time you are on this course. The layout of the course is a challenge for all level of player, with the conditions as good in the summer as in the winter. On the day I played, there were some areas under repair, and the greens had been recently punched and sanded, but that is the nature of the course superintendant--they get on top of it before it becomes a complaint.
Lack of ability to cope with human accidents
In today 's course, there was an accident where a beverage cart was overturned and a female driver was laid under the cart. My friend and I lifted the cart, called 911 to catch the incident, and the other player called the golf course office and announced the news. After that, there were only two employees, but they did not ask for the situation at the time of the accident and did not say thank you to the customers who helped. My friend and I ran as soon as we saw the cart fall. My friend, who was a bit uncomfortable with the legs, ran with me. However, the employee walked off the cart slowly to the scene of the accident, and his facial expression was full of irritation. Anyone who enjoys golf can suffer injuries or accidents. At the golf course here, I think I should probably think I can die.
Beautiful golf course!! Great challenge! Beat conditions I’ve played this year so far!!
Always a great place to play
Whirlwind (Managed by Troon Golf), is typically always in very good to great condition. Yesterday was no exception, tee boxes, fairways and greens were in great shape. Will be back soon to play again.
Wondering how your experience was with the bunkers and pro shop staff? I will be visiting the area in November and was hoping to play here but some recent reviews regarding sand and staff have put me off.
Cheers!
