Water logged
Always a fun course to play, but obviously with all the rain the course was wet and many areas were overgrown since it's too wet to mow the grass. Unfortunately without major improvements to the drainage, it's just the way it is. The greens were in great shape, and the staff was solid per usual.
VERY poor conditions. SWAMP
It was absolutely awful conditions. The whole course is a swamp, literally. 12 of the 18 fairways had an inch or two of water and mud and were essentially unplayable. It was irritating that they didn’t mention any of this and are still charging full price as if the course is in normal shape.
Mucho Agua
Very wet. Not a dry spot on the course. At least 1” of water everywhere. Can’t believe it was open. But when it’s dry, very fun course. Great staff. Great food. Great atmosphere. Terrible drainage. Luckily, we do not have to deal with that too often.
Wet AF
Do not play here if it has rained in the last week. Very wet and doesn’t drain well.
Other than that, this course is always fun and challenging. Staff is always great and friendly. Food is good.
Greens were wet and sandy, so rolled slow. Usually really nice.
In a month or 2, I will be playing this course a few
times a month
Under Water
This course has always had bad drainage, but with the recent rains, most of the course is like trying to play in a swamp. They should issue hip waders before playing. Spent hours trying to find a dry enough place to hit my ball. They should be embarassed to charge what they are
charging for this mess! They recently changed the name to make it sound fancier, but felt like they were putting lipstick on a pig. Don't even try to play this course till summer - they should close it down till then.
Really fun course
It is challenging and fair. Great place to work on your irons.
One word DRAINAGE
I did NOT play well that day but the grounds have little or no drainage.really.
Punched greens
Would be nice to know the greens were just punched, I would like a redo.
Poor drainage
Even a week after the rains, this course remains wet Wet WET! Very poor drainage conditions. Not a dry spot in site. Unfriendly check in staff if you’re a GN patron. 2some, 3somes sent out causes SLOW pace of play. Club members using their carts zig zagging across all fairways destroying the course even more. Cart paths only idiots! Stay away for a while!
Sandy and Soggy
Course was very soggy due to recent rains. Fairways were largely unplayable. Greens has been punched and sanded. Sand had not settled, so we were basically putting on sand. Very disappointing course shape and should have been offered at discount.
Muddy, but Enjoyable!
Welcome to post rainy season golf play!
I enjoyed my early morning start time on the course on 03/04/23.
It was following a month of rainy weather in Northern SD County and the course was mostly playable, but some fairways were just too saturated.
The drainage system was working great, but there was still too much standing water in some of the longer, flatter fairways.
I’ve played this course many times over the last 8 years and I will continue to in the future.
Come enjoy and be glad you did!!
don't play here unless you want to wait the whole round
As we were going to be vacationing in the Carlsbad area and wanted to play golf, we read reviews before we booked at St Marks (now called The Links) and they seemed to be good other than only a couple of bad ones. But it was awful. Not only was it cart path only which they hadn't informed us, but worse, was that the greens had recently been sanded and we weren't told about that either. Usually there is price break if the course is undergoing maintenance such as seeding but that didn't happen.
Unfortunately, the real issue was the long, long wait every time to hit. The GPS in the cart was letting us know the elapsed time and how far we were behind pace. By the third hole we were already behind. The fourth hole was 28 minutes behind and we were always right up to the guys in front as they were to the groups before them. They just had too many people booked on the course! We left at the end of hole 15 as by that time we were at 4 hour and 24 minutes with 3 more holes to go and behind pace by 55 minutes. So, we gave up as if we continued to play the full 18, it would have taken around 5 1/2 hours.
Dangerous when it’s wet!
I have played Saint Marks executive a few times in the last couple months but after it had rained quite a bit lately, the golf course apparently does not drain very well. In particular the eighth hole down the hill where the green is is a real boggy mess. My footjoy shoes did not hold, and I fell flat on my back and butt and head and gave myself whiplash. I managed to complete the round, but have been pretty stiff since. I am 73 years old, and had it been much worse I might have owned the place! Ha! Anyway, I enjoy the layout normally, but when it’s wet it can be dangerous.
Horrible
No notification of aerating the greens last week , course was super soggy, and yet still charged full price …..sucks cause this place is usually in great shape
Followed an epic winter storm/hurricane
We played the day following San Diego's epic 2023 winter storm and the course was VERY soggy - cart path only - and the greens were punched and heavily sanded...but the course has a great layout and we had a fun in spite of all of that. SO, .when the course gets cleaned up I'd come back and highly recommend it.
Cow Pature Golf
While the course was suffering from all the recent rain, it didn't look like it would be that much better in dry weather. Fairways are a mishmash of various grasses and bare ground. Sand traps hadn't been raked for a long time and were either blown out or had standing water. Greens were decent, although recently sanded so hard to tell how well they rolled. We bailed after 9 holes.
Bad
The group ahead of us were filming on the course acting like good good or something. We called it in and nothing was done. No mention of sanded greens, restaurant closure, or flooded fairways in the pro shop. The staff was nice but I’m glad I only paid $18 on a hot deal for today. Not what it used to be.
