Slow play and they didn't pair up singles or twosomes
Otherwise, good greens, fairways, tee boxes
Not Great, Not Good
For a course that is not cheap, this place is a gimmick. We had a 1150 tee time, get there at 1120, go into the pro shop, check in, buy range balls, the usual progression.
We get to the range, which is about a 3-4 minute drive from the pro shop, and the ball dispenser is empty, so no range balls for us, amazing they didn’t have this ready for Sunday morning tee times.
Then we go to the starter and one tee at 1140 to check in, there’s a twosome on the tee box, and apparently another two some ahead of us, which seemed off because we’re 1150, it’s 1140 and their tee times are on the ten minute.
The starter then explained to us that they were both the 1140 tee time, but since they booked separately they were going to have them play separate, so our 1150 tee time quickly became noon, with two twosomes in front of us that were behind like 19 foursomes I believe the starter said.
So with our newly found free time since there were none of our paid for range balls to hit or scheduled tee times to play, we talked to the starter about the course.
They’d lost sections of the greens to fungus so there’s huge sand sections sporadically throughout the course, so that’s just brutal. Type of grass on the greens varies from one hole to the next so some were punched more recently that others. It was just a mess.
Overall, the place is a disaster. When we made the turn, we saw 12 guys standing on one tee box who looked prepared to play together as one big group, and we got to ten tee to learn one of the twosomes was now a single so we got to watch a single play golf the whole back nine with absolutely nowhere to go due to the terrible pace of play management.
Average course
Average course as far as conditions and pace of play go. We teed off at 9:30 and finished at almost 2 pm. Some of the greens were in rough shape and were just dirt and sand, but most were in fair to good shape. Different layout and a lot of great scenic views.
Would recommend but after greens improve
Staff there is always top notch and very helpful. My recommendation is more a policy issue. There was an aerification warning on the hot deal sign up. I hit the pause button and called the pro shop to inquire about it. They said that they picked the greens a couple weeks ago and that is should be healed up. It was anything but. Greens were in terrible shape as if they had lost them and tried to punch them to work through it. Policy change should really be that there should be some sort of rating system or better communication when they are that bad. Please address. Again staff otherwise was super and the layout is top notch.
Course in great shape. No back ups but took close to 5 hours.
Good and bad
It was a little longer course than me and my dad usually play. We were pretty consistently 20-30 yards short of the green after two shots. We played from the white tees. That’s fine, we just aren’t very good haha!
Fairways and tee boxes were in great condition. Easy to hit off of, and even the higher stuff wasn’t bad at all.
Bad: greens. Greens were bumpy and sandy. Impossible to read and impossible to putt well on. Very disappointing.
Also, they don’t tell you that you have to pay $20 to park. I thought we were getting a great deal but ended up paying as much or more as we would’ve on other courses.
Also, when we google Stone Mountain golf course, all the pictures were or Lakemont and we couldn’t play Lakemont. I honestly had no clue there were two courses.
