Challenging Course and an awesome Staff
Course is in great condition and both the ground keeping and pro shop staff are awesome. Play today.
Good test of golf
Played the stonemont course, great layout and a great test of golf. Hit every club in the bag during the round, very enjoyable, definitely want to play again in the spring/summer
Great Course with a great view
excellent course in Atlanta, and perfect setting in stone mountain park. Phenenomal staff and course and greens are pristine!
Golfers Atmosphere
First time on either course. Played Stonemont earlier in the afternoon on one of these cooler days. I'd say Stone Mtn is for more experienced players as the layout was difficult for an inconsistent player like myself. The greens were definitely a work in progress but never seemed to get in the way. I can't remember having to putt through a dirt patch but they were prevelant. The course was unforgiving for anything but accuracy off the tees however I only managed to loose 2 balls over 18. I definitely had a great experience especially for the price. I'd be a lil irritated at anything over $50 due to the green condition. Other than that and some spots that received some recent heavy rain, the course was great. This course provides a true golfers experience.
Needs work
Haven't played at Stone Mountain for about 2 months. There is still damage to a few greens that hasn't been repaired, just trying to let the grass "grow back". Pin placements were probably "illegal" on some holes, causing players to need as many as 6 putts to finish a hole, as slightly short putts rolled back as much as 25 ft. The greens are very hard and extremely fast, which cause well struck shots to bounce way over some greens. This course needs a new category beyond extremely challenging, especially playing in very windy conditions. Unless you enjoy punishment, try other courses in the area until you hear that things have improved.
Not Worth It
When the park charged a $20 entrance fee, I had a feeling we were in for it. The clubhouse and staff were great, no complaints with them at all. Once in your cart, there is about a 3-5 minute ride to the range and the course. The range is small, but that isn't a problem, just be careful as you are walking around as it is possible to walk into another player's path since there was no walkway behind the mats we had to hit from.
Once on the course, I quickly realized that even with the deal we found on GolfNow, this course needs to reevaluate their pricing. Many of the greens had dead spots and a few even had sections that looked like the turf had some squares cut out to remove fungus, leaving dirt to putt on/over. The tee times are packed in at every 10 minutes and this is a challenging course, so if you slice a drive in the woods, the next group will be on top of yours for the rest of the round.
The fairways, rough, and bunkers are all looking great for November conditions. A few holes had questionable designs such as the 9th, as the fairway was littered with range balls that had been hit beyond the driving range. Because it is a blind landing area, it took at least 15 attempts to identify my drive sitting in the middle of the fairway from the other white balls that had found it as well.
Overall, this course is not in terrible shape but definitely not worth the $70 tee time + $20 for admission. There are much better courses in Atlanta to play at that price point. I normally don't leave a bad review for a course here, but I felt the need to warn others that wanted to try our one of the destination courses in Atlanta.
Nice Place To Play But the Fivesomes Need to Go
I enjoy playing both Stone Mountain courses. The people that work here are great. Very friendly. The courses are nice and kept in good condition. I do have one complaint in that the last 4 times I've played here they have allowed fivesomes to go out and I was in a group behind them and could see there were usually 2 holes open in front of them by the time you get to the back nine. They need to take a look at allowing fivesomes. It really slows down the entire course.
Slow play and they didn't pair up singles or twosomes
Otherwise, good greens, fairways, tee boxes
Not Great, Not Good
For a course that is not cheap, this place is a gimmick. We had a 1150 tee time, get there at 1120, go into the pro shop, check in, buy range balls, the usual progression.
We get to the range, which is about a 3-4 minute drive from the pro shop, and the ball dispenser is empty, so no range balls for us, amazing they didn’t have this ready for Sunday morning tee times.
Then we go to the starter and one tee at 1140 to check in, there’s a twosome on the tee box, and apparently another two some ahead of us, which seemed off because we’re 1150, it’s 1140 and their tee times are on the ten minute.
The starter then explained to us that they were both the 1140 tee time, but since they booked separately they were going to have them play separate, so our 1150 tee time quickly became noon, with two twosomes in front of us that were behind like 19 foursomes I believe the starter said.
So with our newly found free time since there were none of our paid for range balls to hit or scheduled tee times to play, we talked to the starter about the course.
They’d lost sections of the greens to fungus so there’s huge sand sections sporadically throughout the course, so that’s just brutal. Type of grass on the greens varies from one hole to the next so some were punched more recently that others. It was just a mess.
Overall, the place is a disaster. When we made the turn, we saw 12 guys standing on one tee box who looked prepared to play together as one big group, and we got to ten tee to learn one of the twosomes was now a single so we got to watch a single play golf the whole back nine with absolutely nowhere to go due to the terrible pace of play management.
