Greens a problem
Really nice course layout but the greens were terrible. Claimed the drought caused it but we didn't see that in any other area courses. Bunkers were not worked at all had were full of stones. Claimed there was a beverage cart but we never saw it and the few water jugs we found on the course we're out of water. Can't believe we paid almost $100 for this. What a shame for such a nice layout
This Course has Gone Downhill
I don't know what happened to the Tribute. I played it back in 2013, and since then have told all of my friends that it ranks among the best courses in Michigan. I was really looking forward to playing it on this latest golf trip we took. We had not been back to the Gaylord area for a while because our group had played there so often that we needed to spend some time in other areas of the state. Anyway, we thought we had a great golf trip planned-- Black Lake on Friday, Michawaye Pines and the Tribute on Saturday, the Tradition and the Fazio on Sunday, and Gaylord Country Club on Monday. I anticipated that the Tribute would be the highlight of the trip, and we were all pretty focused on it. What a disappointment. The course is a wreck, and you can tell that Otsego Club does not really care about golf or golfers anymore. I think they want to focus on skiing in the winter and being a venue for weddings and conventions in the Summer, and the Club only (and barely) tolerates golfers. They moved the pro shop from the beautiful facility they had a few years back to stinkhole. The guy in the pro-shop explained that it was closer to the cart barn so it saved them (i,e, the club) time and effort. He waited until we paid ($65 for twilight) and then gave us $20 coupons (for our next visit) because the course "has suffered from some dry spots." Good grief, when we played it, it was absolutely terrible. I would not have payed $20 to play it, let alone $65 (or $89 prior to twilight kicking in). There is no way we will ever use the $20 coupons. Everyone there was rude, and it was clear that they did not know what was going on.
By the way, the other courses we played were all in great shape, and each of them (except, maybe Black Lake) experienced the same weather as the Tribute. So, how could it be that only the Tribute could be in such rough shape? My guess is that Otsego Club has decided that maintaining golf courses is too expensive, so they just stopped doing it. They're glad to take your money, but I suspect that will soon dry up as more golfers experience their new business model. I feel like I need to seek out everyone I told that the Tribute was a great course and apologize to them
Lack of care
I have been playing golf in the Gaylord area for the past 7 years and finally had the opportunity to play the Tribute Golf Course at the Otsego Club. I have heard the outstanding reviews regarding the layout and conditions of the Tribute. Although the layout and scenery did not disappoint, the course conditions are almost beyond repair. The lack of maintenance is apparent on all holes, especially the tees and greens. Most greens are cracked and have minimal to no grass remaining. They feel and look as if your playing on cracked concrete. The fringes are yellow and burned out from lack of water. Most of the tees have no grass remaining. The course is an embarrassment to the Gaylord Golf Mecca. I understand this course is under new management for the past 3 years, and it is apparent this management does not care about it reputation as one of the areas finest. Unless something drastic changes quickly, the course will be unplayable in the nearby future. I cannot express my disappointment, especially compared to other course in the area. Once being the highlight of the Gaylord area, the Tribute has unfortunately become a wasteland nestled on the natural beauty which the course lays upon.
Not worth the high greens fee
The course has high winter kill in the greens and fairways and has no senior rate or weekday discounts. Previously weekday rates were $45.00. ClubHouse person at sign in was very aragont. Bag girls very helpfull. I don't recommend playing this course paying the new inflated weekday rates. The score card does not have correct pars for some of the courses holes. 67,88,and 63 dollars is to much for a weekday golf at this course. Seniors go some place else.
Could have been great...
Overall course (what we were able to see) was great with beautiful elevated views. Went up here on buddies trip along with the neighboring TreeTops (go here).
Upon arrival I was impressed with carts lined up which include a yardage book, water bottle, and towel to wipe off your clubs. The first few holes went by great with beautiful views - most holes here change elevation as you progress through the hole.
The problem like with most courses was pace of play. I dont complain much when i am at a local muni or course by my house but when paying top dollar to play one of the best course i expect better - the neighboring TreeTops had made sure we were keeping pace multiple times within our round. At the Tribute we got through the first 9 holes in about 3 hours (wasnt too upset as it is weekend up north). It took us an additional 1 hr 45 minutes to play the next 3 holes. We were waiting with the 4 some in front of us on each of these holes for the 4 some in front of them to tee off. I called into the club house and asked what was going on and to have a ranger sent out - they responded "there is a ranger on the course - he should be there eventually". Upon seeing the ranger, he said it was a busy day and he couldnt ask people to speed up. We decided to quit after 12. As we were driving back to the club house holes 13-16 were packed. On one hole there was 6 senior citizens playing together. The next hole had the two carts in the middle of the fairway with all four members about 200 yards away in the woods fishing for balls. There was not one person on 17 and 18. Obviously it had gotten plugged up and could have easily been prevented by having a couple groups speed up or skip a hole. Upon leaving i told the person working in the clubhouse with him letting me know "well there is a ranger out there, i dont know what you want me to do".
As i said beautiful course but for paying the same price as TreeTops, I would go with the neighbor who offer much better accommodations and customer service from club house to finishing 18.
Lot of fun to play
Front nine is awesome. Greens rolled perfect. Weather was great on 10/1.
I was well satisfied with the condition of the course and the pace of play.
Playing the tribute course for the first time I was quite pleased with the condition of the course. The course is quite hilly which requires play uphill and downhill and consequently there are few fairway positions that are level. The tee boxes are level with adequate distance markers, the fairways have adequate distant markers at 200 150 and 100 yards. The greens are fair sized in good condition, I played late in the day and the greens were still very fast, hole place was very acceptable.
The Greens are Tricked Up
Arrived at the couse for 8:20 Tee Time. We were informed that we were delayed one hour due to frost. Had the buffet which was great. Teed off at 9:30, did not get to hit warm up balls due to confusion of some kind. Got out on the course and realized that they had pin placements and course map for Tribute instead of Classic which we were playing. Called from hole 2 and asked to have a pin placement sheet with course map brought out. Never came. Called from hole 7 and was placed on hold. Got to the proshop at the turn and inquired as to what was going on. Female working the desk said there were no pln placement sheets and didn't know what hole we were on. She was clearly aggravated with me at which point the manager of the proshop came over and stood by her but didn't say antything. I said I called and told them and when I called back I was placed on hold . Her response was she busy. No apology no nothing, just wanted to be rid of me.The course had only two par threes and two par fives. The greens were ultra fast with undulations and whoevever set the pins did not know what they were doing and were not checked. One was placed on the very top of a hill that you could not get to and another was placed on the side of a hill. It was so ridiculous that we just laughed. Won't go back.
Very good value for the money
Very fast and in great shape greens. Very friendly staff.
Enjoyable course
Just long enough, pretty forgiving, very FAST greens!
Very tough greens
1st time playing this course. Fairways are playable but once you get to the greens, good luck. Pin placements were on some slopes and if you got on the wrong side, 3 putt minimum. Greens held well and putted true but level spots are rarely found. Some of the views from the course are just beautiful. I consider this one of, if not the toughest courses in the Gaylord area because of the greens.
Great Views, wonderful course!!
I haven't played the Otsego club in 15 years, and never the tribute course, but I will definitely be back!! The views and course was wonderful!!
Beautiful course as far as views
We really love this course. The price was great through Golfnow.com.
this course had nice pray paint spots
course was at best ok.
asked in club house if beer cart was out there , was told yes....
after 9 holes and a broke pop machine, we ask at the turn and bar tender tells us no she's on the other course...really..wow thanks!
carts where beat up really BAD. Ball hole on the one, mildew all over bag covers with rips in them. 3 of us went and our cart had a black mold/mildew on the inside of the cart roof. told the them in the pro shop and did not seems to care at all?.... never even said sorry... the cart loaders did not offer club cleaning or to unload bags, were very rude to us after we said something....thanks for caring guys.
I would not play there again!!!
Great Experience
We arrived early at the course and they got us right out. We enjoyed the course the views were great.... when the colors are changing it would be the best. Staff was great... Would highly recommend.
Loved the course layout and views
One of my favorite courses in Michigan. Will definitely come back to this one. AAA++++
Course was well maintained and enjoyable to play.
Went out with my son for the first time and was able to enjoy a relaxing day golfing. Course is excellent for beginners and those who are getting back into the game
Great course!!!
The views here are spectacular! The course itself is in beautiful condition too. I think the condition of the course was as good as any I have ever played and we played it at 1:10. A lot of the nicer courses start to get chewed up by that point in the day but this one was not. I will definitely play it again!!!!!
Beautiful course, play early.
I love this course but very slow play in the afternoon.
Good but great
Average is not bad, but there are many courses in the area. This one is worth playing, but I can not say that I would play it again before trying others.
