Mount Mitchell Golf Club

Had made the trip up twice this summer to play MMGC. Although course conditions were not great I really loved playing here. I walked since their fee’s were beyond ridiculous. So many complained about the cost they had lowered their rates by late summer, but still $20 too much.

It’s sad to see this week what the Hurricane Rains have done to the course! its basically totally destroyed! I’ll be surprised if they even attempt to revive/reconstruct the place vs just selling off the land for housing! It certainly will not be reopened for a very very long time.. possibly by next fall.

I should have made the drive back there to play it the Monday before the storm as I had planned, but I am thankful I got to experience it twice this summer.

We played this course a little over a year ago and the course was in good shape. The course is in terrible shape now. The fairways were long and wet. They are losing their greens. The greens are pitiful. I am including a photo of a tee box which is a good depiction of the whole course.

We paid the $50 apiece through Golf Now.

The regular price was $70

Excellent layout, stunning views. Fairways and tee boxes in good shape, but a little bit of attention would make them excellent. Staff was very welcoming and food quality was top notch.

Can’t say enough about how much fun we had playing Mt Mitchell. This was my fourth visit and my best. Everything is in great mtn condition. Cool temps , so lots of dew. The grass loves it but play later in the day if that bothers you. Otherwise, it’s a true destination course ( and very playable).

A Mt course within the beauty of the Blue Ridge mtns just under Mt. Mitchell. I love the course layout, the narrow fairways (when I am hitting the ball straight)and the challenge of the greens but not enough maintenance being done to justify premium green fees.

This course has a lot of potential. It needs some TLC. A knowledgeable head greens keeper with a reasonable budget for maintenance supplies would help to transform this course back to its original glory as being one of the premier courses.

A lot of the greens were messed up and the sand traps were washed out with no sand in them. Course has gone down hill over the years, cost being so cheap indicates that. They are hurting for business obviously. I will not go back

First time playing there. Heard a lot about the course's former glory. The course needs a headgroundskeeper to bring it back. Crabgrass overtaking fairways and greens. Tee boxes need work. It was Labor day and the place was empty.

I played this course for a charity fundraiser.. the price I posted was what we payed to play. There are a variety of costs to play this course.. Mt Mitchell has had a rough summer with all the rain.. the course took a beating.. All I can say is what a great job the ground crew did this past week in getting this course looking great.. we had a great time..give this course a try.. you will love the layout and the views.. the restaurant and staff are fantastic.. look forward to playing it again

Course is in a great setting, with stunning vistas of Mt Mitchell and other mountains. Unfortunately, some of the fairways had terrible tall tufts of grass that caused me to lose three balls that I had hit in the fairways. I could not locate them among these grass tufts. Folks around the clubhouse said that they had to stop mowing the fairways for awhile recently due to extensive rains. After the rains stopped, the grass had grown so high that their mowers couldn’t be used and the course would need to bring in special mowers to get at the tall tufts. Those conditions put a little bit of a damper on my outing. Once the course addresses those fairway grass problems, it can be a very worthwhile venue.

Perhaps Debby flooded the place, some fairways were full of large tufts of grass at least 6" high, and patches of sand intermingled, maybe the water hadn't gone down in time to let them get it all mowed. Not complaining, but perhaps they should have closed until they had it done?

The lay out of the course is awesome, the course was freshly mowed and there was grass laying everywhere. I can’t tell you how many balls were lost in the middle of the fairway. The fairways with out clumps of grass had sand and see down in large patches. The greens were all very slow and fluffy to the point if you had a long putt it was impossible to find a line. The two greens that were short and rolled were half dead. It’s a beautiful setting and great lay out but just needs some better grounds keeping. Two guys I played with said they paid 80$ and were shocked when I said I got the hot deal on golf now. They said they weren’t sure they’d want to pay 28$ to play there.

The fairways were like the rough in most courses. The layout was nice but even at the low cost for the round, we would not play again.

Great layout but the course wasn’t in good condition. The staff was excellent and very friendly. Pace of play was very very slow. We waited about 10-15 minutes on every hole. It was backed up pretty much the entire day. It took 5 hours and 15 minutes for 18 holes.

It’s a high price for a course that had crab grass everywhere and badly needed to be mowed. I was excited to play here and drove over an hour but I won’t be back. The staff was super nice thou

Great setting and friendly staff. After that? Nada. Ever lose a ball in the fairway? Yep. Hard to differentiate between rough and short grass on many holes. Pock marked greens , slow and shaggy. Some tee boxes moon scape, others decent. No driving range, no chipping area. Not even close to being worth 70pp. Staff was kind enough to refund 1/2 of that when we bagged it after nine holes.
