About Devil's Head Resort

Devil’s Head Resort in Merrimac in Sauk County has grown from a small ski resort to one of Wisconsin’s best ski-and-golf destinations. The resort opened in 1970 with a 92-room hotel, four chairlifts and 10 runs in 1970. Today, Devil’s Head offers two golf courses, 138 hotel rooms, more suites and condos, six dining options, a conference center and more chairlifts and ski runs. Art Johnson designed both courses, Glacier and Prairie Glen. Glacier navigates a maze of elevation changes with rugged features of rock out-croppings and water on seven holes. Prairie Glen offers its own challenges with island greens and plenty of water and traps.

Beautiful course

It’s a beautiful course in the middle of nowhere. Such good views. The greens are getting better every time we come back.

Terrible condition

Need to work on the greens. Beautiful layout but poor conditions. Have to do lots of improvements.

Beautiful location but coarse needs work

Beautifully located in the Baraboo Bluffs. Many sand traps were under repair and the greens were in average condition at best. Course needs some TLC especially at this price point. Definitely has potential due to the location, scenery and wildlife.

Devils Head Prairie Glen

Not great. Tee boxes were awful, greens were even worse. We were given a hard time upon check in even though we prepaid through GolfNow. Overall a poor experience. It is a shame to see this beautiful area go downhill at a rapid pace.

Devils Head Prairie

This was my first time playing this course. I wasnt not impressed with the high price tag to play this course. 70bucks normally. At the time greens, most tee boxes were not mowed, dirt or hard as a rock. The course should be in better condition it is 45 bucks course at best. The hole layout was unique. A few island greens ish to hit onto. May play again later in the year to see if conditions have changed not sure though. Coming from Madison hard course to get to.

Wisconsin Golf

Great week of golf in Wisconsin. Finished at Devils Head Resort. Course was very nice layout. Two greens were in bad shape, the other 16 were nice. Tee boxes needed work, most were un-mowed or not seeded. Fairways were great. "Club House" was very Spartan, very little in the way of merchandise.

Dreadful course

I happened to be staying in the region and booked a morning tee time on their Glacier course, they have two courses the other being the prairie. I can’t begin to tell you how atrocious this course was. Most of the bunkers are literal disaster zones, as are many of the greens. The fairways are average and I’ll defined at best and most of the tee boxes are caked in mud. There are many blind tee shots but zero directional markers, yardage markers are inconsistent and the golf carts in a dilapidated state. My cart’s tires were so threadbare my cart had no forward traction on hills. I would therefore have to roll backwards and get back to the rutted cart path. No clubhouse just a small shack selling a few beers and soft drinks. Apparently there is a pro shop and restaurant but it’s nowhere near the course or first tees or cart pickup. The distance from the 4th green to the 5th tee is about half a mile and I’m not exaggerating, if you were walking you would need to catch a bus. I got lost missing the direction sign that was laying horizontal in a bush. All of this is bad enough but the worst is they charge $69 for this experience, the course isn’t worth $19. I have contacted the club asking for a refund or at least a partial one and they haven’t even had the curtesy of a response. Needless to say I recommend avoiding this course.

Hi! I had a similar incident happen recently. Did the course ever respond to you? I know it's a long shot but did you take any additional photos of the course or your golf cart? Thanks, Michelle

Great Layout, maintenance problem

I played 18 yesterday and loved the layout. It was challenging but not gimmicky. The course has obvious maintenance problems but I still would recommend it

Sad to see how run down the course has become

I play here once or twice a year and this may well me my last, dirt tee boxes, even rubber mats. Sanded greens, damaged greens severely deteriorated cart paths. Obviously running on a shoestring budget. The highlight was at least there was a cart girl.

Winchell’s

Directions not always clear. I got turned around and was playing the wrong holes so couldn’t’t keep score properly.I’ll bring someone with me, if I come back - it’s an hour drive for me.

Terrible course never go there.

This place sucked. The pictures Lure you into thinking it is a sweet track but when we went it was a huge mistake. They should have paid us to come play there. Tee boxes in horrific condition. Basically hitting off dirt or sand. Greens were like putting on the fairway. The fact that there was not a soul there was a testament that the place wasn’t good. When we got there we were the only ones in the parking lot. Weren’t even sure it was open. Shows that if you make the mistake of playing there your never going back. Don’t recommend.

Devils Head

I have been going to this course for many years and the course maintenance and conditions have deteriorated so badly over time that I find it very sad. Tee boxes are horrible, fairways on many holes are poorly maintained. Pace of play was fine because nobody was there playing. Overall our whole group was very disappointed.
