Perennial site of PGA Professional National Championship, Sunriver's Crosswater Course as beautiful as it is challenging

SUNRIVER, Ore. -- Certainly one the best golf courses in Oregon, Sunriver's Crosswater Course is a Bob Cupp gem with a tournament pedigree.

It has already played host to the PGA Professional National Championship three times and will again for the 50th edition in 2017. It was also the site of the Champions Tour's JELD-WEN Tradition from 2007-10; the 2006 NCAA men's Division I Championship and the 1998 Western PGA Professional Championship.

Laid out over 600 scenic acres of woodlands and carefully preserved wetlands, Crosswater is threaded by the gently flowing Deschutes and Little Deschutes Rivers. In fact, depending on tee selection the rivers can come into play as often as seven times in a round.

The design is traditional heathland style, and the golf course features five tee placements for each hole as well as bentgrass fairways and greens and closely mowed chipping areas around the green. In 1999, Crosswater was designated as a certified Audubon Sanctuary.

Ranked no. 51 on Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Public Courses list, Crosswater is open to its members and guests of the Sunriver resort.

With more than 300 days of sunshine -- and a much drier climate than people think of when they picture this part of the country -- central Oregon is an ideal spot for golf. Ranked among the top 50 golf destinations in the world by Golf Digest, central Oregon remains somewhat of an unknown to golfers in other parts of the country. This area, however, should definitely be on their radar if they're considering a golf trip, Mike Bailey writes.
