My New AZ Favorite
I played Troon North's Monument course for the first time, and I can only hope it will not be my last. I had heard about this course many times over the year's but never had the opportunity to play. All I can say, is it lived up to the hype. The conditions at Troon North were better than any course I have EVER played in AZ, and we played in June (when conditions are not supposed to be ideal). The Greens are literally perfect, and rolled true to their lines on every hole. But that's not to say they were easy either, in fact, they represented a welcome challenge. On approaches, if you didn't have a high-loft shot or backspin, you usually didn't end up staying on the green. Fairways/rough were also in great shape for June. Bunkers have the soft white sand you hope for, and really differentiated the course from other's where a bunker is sometimes just "glorified desert". The most noticeable difference of Troon over other courses I have played in AZ was the maturity of the course. On some desert courses, if you are left/right of the fairway, there's a chance you will find your ball and be able to play it. However, at Troon, the vegetation and cacti are so luscious that you are considered extremely lucky if you have a shot out of it. Some golfer's would find this to be a negative, but I appreciated the fact that you were penalized from wayward shots. Our group had our fair share of those penalties, but the course is absolutely fair off the tee at the same time. It's evident that this course has been well maintained and developed for many years, to the point that even the "desert" feels as though it was personally manicured before each round. I could write about this course forever, but in the end you just have to experience it to understand what a fantastic course it is to play. I can't wait to get back out to play the Pinnacle course soon. My one caution to golfer's on a budget is to do your best to play in the offseason. While I can justify paying peak season pricing for this course (and I would say that about few courses that cost $200+), I believe the value was maximized by playing the course in June like our group did (@ roughly $100). Regardless of the results of your round, you are likely to come away pleased with your trip to Troon North!
This is a great course.
It was the first time playing the course. The condition was great, probably due to lack of play this time of year. The pace of play was excellent, again probably due to the fact that the course was almost empty. The staff was friendly and helpful. The layout was excellent and it is a beautiful place to play. I will play it again if I get a chance.
Desert Gem
Course was in excellent condition with plenty of variety of holes. Pace of play was remarkably good at just under 4 hours.
Not what I expected
I suppose it is a course that needs to be played a few times to enjoy. My overall star rating would probably change. I was a little disappointed by the incongruity of the two 9's but overall it was a great day.
MINT Condition
Troon North is an experience, not just a round of golf. From the time you pull in, to the time you leave you are greeted and treated like royalty. You get what you pay for here, lush fairways, manicured greens and tee boxes, it plays hard but fair. A true players course from the tips. Amazing, thanks Troon North!!
Great and Challenging Course, Mediocre Value
If you simply want to play the best golf courses in the PHX area, I recommend playing here.
That said, in terms of value, it is not great at 200~ for a round. I paid 130 at twilight.
The course itself was very good. I played the back tees and found it challenging. There are some blind shots, it's narrow and it helps where to have knowledge coming into tough green complexes.
The conditioning was amazing and the staff was an 11/10. They over-delivered via (1) getting me out on Pinnacle as I was supposed to play monument, and (2) returned my credit card to my hotel, without me even calling, after I forgot it at the bar.
Monument course
Course was the highlight of the day. Great layout in fantastic condition. Love the desert layout. Not too difficult for a mid handicapper. Greens were in good shape although lots of ball marks. Very fast and difficult to put if not used to it. Nicest carts I’ve ever ridden in. Staff was only mildly friendly. The first comment made to me at club drop off was “there is a tip jar inside, we all split them”. Very strange for a first greeting. Staff at the carts seemed more interested in what they were doing rather than welcoming and greeting guests. Pro shop help was good and friendly. Booked as a single but paired with a twosome. No issue expect their pace was very slow and we could have used a ranger to better manage playing times. Didn’t see one all day. Booked on GolfNow.com to save $. Good call. Although even at full price it’s worth it.
Golf Board at the Desert Course
I'm glad everything worked out for me to use the golf board. The staff was friendly and accommodating for me as a solo player. Be sure to arrive early to enjoy all amenities and take proper training for riding a golf board. The Monument course was challenging yet fun for an amature, out-of-town golfer not use to tough desert course conditions and layout.
Excellent track
First time playing Pinnacle. Course is in excellent condition. A good variety of hole layouts and challenges for all levels of players. Very well maintained from tee to green. Very positive experience from check-in to practice facility to course to exit. Highly recommended.
Breathtaking
The course really makes you focus on your overall game. Especially the approach shots of getting over the wash. Even if you didn’t bring your A game; the scenery alone was absolutely breathtaking. The course was in perfect condition. The tee boxes provided ample benefits for all handicaps. I would absolutely play this course again. I’m looking forward to playing Monument next time.
Quintessential desert course
First time playing in the desert and this was a fantastic facility. Greens were fast and firm. Overall conditions were excellent and meticulously maintained. Rangers were present and active in keeping groups on pace which was much appreciated.
First Impressions
This was my first trip to Troon and definitely won't be my last. The staff was very nice, we had a caddy for the day that was helpful and the course was one of the best I've played. The course was in unbelievable shape, there wasn't a bade of grass out of place that I could find. I have played a lot of golf courses across the United States and this was one that I found myself wanting to take a picture of every hole. The only downside was the price, in the courses defense we were there in peak season, but it's not a course I would want to pay to play more than a couple times a year.
