Palm Course - McCormick Ranch Photo submitted by tainge on 03/29/2013
No need for cart path only
We had a tee time around mid-day on a Saturday. It rained the night before but stopped by 6:00am and was otherwise a perfect, sunny, warm day from 7:00am onward. When we arrived at the course, we were informed it was cart-path only all day because the course was water logged. Having rained the night before, that seemed reasonable at the time. However, once we got out on the course it was clear the course had drained just fine and was in great shape. Over the course of 18 holes, there were only 3 holes that were too wet and should have been cart-path only. Instead, they made the entire course cart-path only which slowed the pace of play to a crawl. We were constantly waiting and our round took 5.5. hours. Twice I attempted to raise my concerns with the rangers that there was no need to enforce the cart-path only rule on every hole and that it was making the pace of play miserably slow. My concerns fell on deaf ears or were met with rude and aggressive responses from the rangers. The carts at this course are GPS-enabled so the course can set specific holes as cart-path only while unlocking other holes. It simply refused to do so.
Don’t waste your money!!!
My wife and I are avid golfers who usually score in the 80s. We have been coming to Arizona for years to golf. This could be the worst course we have played especially at the price they charge. The greens were so fast, it was like putting on asphalt. The bunkers were hard and crusty, and multiple bunkers had standing water. Fairways were ok. We have played TPC, Estrella, Ocotillo, Raven, AK-Shin, Kokopelli, Western Skies, Superstition, and they are all better. We will never play here again.
Very disappointed in course conditions
This course is so over priced for the conditions it is in right now. I don’t know why they can’t seem to grow grass here? It’s terrible…all over the place but especially around the greens. It’s like hitting on table tops, no grass on firm slipped greens makes some pins literally unplayable. Bunkers are like hard pan and were full of puddles. There hasn’t been rain for weeks and the bunkers were full of water. They need to do some work here… other courses in the area are way better.
Great Course
The staff and course were very well managed.
The experience was great and I look forward to my next round there.
Don’t waste your $$$
I’m an avid golfer ( 9 handicap ) and I’ve played all types of courses. This course in Scottsdale has a great layout but the maintenance is an absolute joke. Fairways average at best , bunkers an absolute mess… hard and crusty. Greens very hard , nothing holds. Greens very very fast , which is fine but when you can’t hold a shot it becomes unfair. The course appears nice from the road but obviously they are not putting much $$$ into looking after it. Many courses in Scottsdale are expensive and therefore McCormick Ranch looks like a good alternative but it truly isn’t a pleasurable , fun golf course to play. They need to put some serious work and money into maintaining this golf course! Look else where.
Frustrations
With hard and fast, Greens, usually there is no problem. In the case of this course, the greens have way too much slope and too unputtable for the speed and hardness of these greens. Balls were coming back to our feet as we chipped them up towards the hole. Most greens are extremely difficult even for a good skilled player. My suggestion would be to slow down the greens by a couple feet of stimp to make them more user-friendly.
Sloppy
Time to Renovate
Thee courses at McCormick used to be a great place to play. Things have significantly changed for the worse, especially the last few years.
The staff is still great and the halfway house, located at the range and turn, is a nice touch. The good service does not make up for the golf course. Greens are very fast but you can’t tell if that is by design or lack of grass. These boxes, fairways and rough are in very bad shape. The bunkers are clearly watered (standing water in them today) but not well maintained.
They are located in convenient Scottsdale but it is not worth anything near the $200 all in we paid today. A significant course renovation is needed.
Thank you to the staff for their service.
Great Course, But turf mats for warmup
Everything was perfect minus the turf mats for the warmup, which isn’t great
Not worth your time or money
This course was in terrible condition and extremely dry. The layout was good but it seems like a course that had better days and is not being looked after. It was very brown with little greenery. The restrooms on course were not well looked after and I was afraid to use the water fountains on course as they were not well maintained. I would not recommend this course for the money, there are much better courses in the area.
Awful
Only the refreshment attendant, Jess, a real smokeshow saves this course from being an 0 star. Extremely Over priced. This should be a $15 course as the Course is in poor condition overall, and very slow pace of play. Find another place to play a round than the "Dirty Mac"
Jones
I paid for 3 up front w the app. Only 2 golfers showed up and I still had to pay for 3 since I booked on the app a few days earlier. Not happy
OK
Greens very tough and true. They need to repave the cart path all of the way through. The bunkers don't drain great! Some leftover sprinkler water. Tee boxes not great. Fairways good. Staff friendly. Just not worth the $$ I paid for it.
McCormick Ranch Palm Course
Course was in bad shape considering this time of year in Phoenix. Hard greens, fairway grass was in bad shape, tee boxes were rough. Not sure what happened here but it's overpriced for the course condition, I've played it in the summer and it's been in better shape. Palm Course back 9 much better than the front 9.
Without a Doubt the worst Course I have ever played!
Our experience on Friday was “less than par’ for a number of reasons.
We were unable to finish our round due to the slow play of the foursome two groups ahead of us. I am almost positive they were playing for the “Green Jacket” or at least they thought they were, Hand bumping, removing and replacing the flag multiple times. Sadly there were three groups behind us that wouldn’t finish their rounds either. Not sure where the course marshal/marshals were but we did not see one our entire round.
This is not the worst thing that happened. On the 11 the 11th. hole one of the fellows we were paired with hit a goose in the chest/neck off the tee box.
The goose fluttered about unable to raise its head.
The fellow called the proshop and advised as to what had happened. Their response, a negligent one I might add was, “this happens all the time and someone will eat well tonight”. I am not sure the onerous that followed us appreciated seeing a suffering or possibly dead goose between the white and brown tee boxes. Not a class act.
SLOOOOW
8:24 t time, very slow. Over 4 1/2 hours. All the fairways were very wet from watering, several plugged balls, almost all green side bunkers had water in them from watering. Greens were fast so that was nice. Would have been more enjoyable if it wasn’t so darn slow. Unusual for that early in the morning.
