Well-maintained but slightly boring layout
This is a great course to play before heading out to the airport as it’s only a 13 mile drive. But the holes are not memorable and the bunkering is very limited. The course is in great shape.
Enjoyable Round
This has always been a favorite course. On the pricey side, so you have to look for deals. Little disappointed in the friendliness of staff. The beverage cart person did her job but wasn’t the friendliest. No warm greeting in the clubhouse either. However the course didn’t disappoint. Really good shape and love the variety of holes.
Short course
I like playing this course. It is short and requires some precision and course management. The couple of times I’ve played there the pace of play is so slow. I suppose it is just crowded? A lot of beginners? There is a lot of waiting around.
This particular afternoon it was extremely windy- which did thin the crowd and made for some crazy shot making.
The fairways are ok, the greens are ok(very slow). You get what you get for $60.
Lovely day, very nice course
The day started a little windy but soon became a lovely afternoon. The course is in terrific shape. It is a Troon property so I would expect it to be well kept. I would consider it as moderately difficult. This was my first time through; second time won't be so challenging. Very nice staff / efficient service. Great practice facility. It is really quite close to town but it does seem like you are way out in the desert. I suppose it is a destination resort?
I enjoyed the round. I will return for more!
Fun to play but pricey.
This course is on the expensive side for the East Valley area of PHX. However, it is fun to play and albeit expensive, worth playing on occasion. Course is in excellent condition. Hard enough that a golfer with a handicap over 18 might want to look elsewhere. Employees were all friendly.
Sanded greens?
I always love playing Whirlwind as its typically in great condition and awesome views. A very pure desert course. Unfortunately this time around, for a rate of $160, we played on greens that were sandy in the middle of prime time golf season. No warning that they were sandy on Golfnow or by staff on the course. Even mentioned it to the cart guys after the round and they didn’t know it was and couldn’t explain why. Overall, pace of play was fine, conditions tee to green were solid minus the sanded greens. Caused putts to bounce more than normal and harder to hold a line. I would still recommend playing here, but not for $160.
Fun Round
Nice layout. We played from the gold tee. A lot of 350-420 yard par 4's. It made for a challenging round. Safe off the tee left a longer iron in. Driver off the tee had better find the fairway. Greens were receptive. I would definitely play again and recommend it. I prefer this over the Cattail course.
Great Track! Well maintained and services are professional. Fair yet challenging.
Great desert feel
My wife (22 hcp) and I (9 hcp) played here Feb 11 on the Devils Claw course. Was greeted very kindly with a cart when we pulled up. Pro shop staff very friendly. Bar and restaurant staff were great. Prices very reasonable. Driving range, chipping and putting greens were immaculate. The starter was very kind and helpful as this was our first time playing here. You will want to keep the ball in play! Ball goes into the desert you will probably not find it. But the fairways and rough are plenty wide enough where this shouldn't be too much of a problem. The course from tee to green was in immaculate condition! Weather was perfect. I loved this course and would definitely play here again. If I had to mention anything bad about the course it would be the bunkers were not all raked and ball marks on the green were plentiful. Now this is not an issue with the course itself but rather with the individual players of the course. Apparently not all golfers are courteous. Go figure!
Course conditions will be tough to beat for the money.
Course was in fantastic condition. Practice area is the best. Prefer the Cattail over the Devil Claw.
Love this course
Course was money as usual. Greens were impeccable, fairways in great shape, and pins in challenging positions. I would play this course every day if I could!
