Carlton Oaks has a long history of tournament golf. Curtis Strange won the 1974 NCAA Championships on the course before Perry Dye redesigned the layout and stretched it to 7,400 yards in the 1980s. THE COURSE IS LESS THAN 2 MILES FROM MY HOUSE AND I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK. THE FAIRWAYS WERE DIRT AND THE GREENS WERE IN FAIR CONDITION. I HAVE SEEN BETTER COW PASTURES.

Goat Ranch (that's an affront to goats, btw)
Pete Dye is rolling over in his grave. At the pro shop, they tell you the grass is dormant. More like the dirt is dormant. The fairways lack much of any kind of grass (mostly dead weeds). I don't think they've watered in months - a drive in the fairway will just keep bouncing. The bunkers are like concrete. If you happen to get in a green-side bunker, just pick you ball up and take a double. Occasionally you find a "Ground Under Repair" sign. Any golf course with any self-respect would rename the entire golf course "Ground Under Repair". The rough and areas between holes is completely unmaintained. They have an epic gopher infestation. It's really a shame. The layout of this course is phenomenal. The management of it is as bad as it could be. I couldn't believe it cost more to play here than it does at Torrey Pines (for a resident). I will not be returning to this course until they do a major overhaul.

Horrible conditions
Conditions were so horrible You couldn’t tell the difference from the doing and fairway. Patches of crab all over the fairway. Bunkers were as hard as packed dirt

Great layout, terrible conditions
Played here multiple times, I love the course layout, lots of potential, but the conditions are the worst that I have ever seen them. Tee boxes and greens fine, but fairways are terrible. I couldn’t tell where the fairways were on some holes. Probably won’t be back for awhile, until it gets maintained, and that’s even if they decide to maintain it.

Dog track! 5 1/2 hours! Snack bar rude and lame
It is a travesty what has happened to once was a great course. PT courses are exceptional and very hard. This thing is a joke. They are only watering the greens and around the green. The rest of it is literally an area you would run your dog out if you didn’t care about your yard. Not to mention it to 5 1/2 hours even after calling the pro shop asking for help to move things along. I have not played in a year and will not be back. Might as well close it and build condos….

Too bad nice layout
This being a Pete Dye layout. Has a lot of potential but lack of grass on the fairways and overall condition is not good.. The greens are the only thing keeping the scores together.

No Progress
I haven’t played here in a while, it seems to be worse. The first hole has about 6 different grasses or weeds in the fairway. To many other better courses around to play here for me, I won’t be back.

What a shame! This course must have been amazing when it opened. But it has been so neglected it is in the worst shape. Avoid this place. Not worth $1/round.

Great Round!
I played here on Feb 21, 2022. It was a great round. Despite it being President's Day, we were able to get out 10-15 minutes early and didn't have too many hold ups. Course is in good shape. Bit of advice, play from the tees that correspond you. It is already a hard course. Don't make it any harder on yourself :)

Terrible Conditions
The courses in general and the courses fairways or lack of, were absolutely trash. The greens and around the greens very nice condition. This is not a 60+ dollar round of golf. Disappointed won’t be playing in Carlton Oaks for quite some time or ever again if they don’t improve. 2 others in my party feel the same way.

Rare to find any actual fairway grass.
Wish this place would invest in making this Dye course the gem it should be. Pretty atrocious fairways at this point, and it cannot be simply attributed to dormant grass or high water costs.

Good day of golf but....
Carlton Oaks was in it's usual condition. Not much grass in the fairways, horrible bunkers and good greens. We expected that before we came to play. We don't complain about the conditions, because the layout is excellent. The difficulty is magnified by the wind in the afternoon. These things we enjoy. What we didn't enjoy was the starter sending out a single, on a Saturday, in between foursomes, that was probably an employee who was off duty or a "friend" of someone. This single took his sweet time, hitting multiple balls without a concern for anyone behind themselves. Send your pal out on a weekday, not on a very busy weekend. Thank you.

Not worth the weekend rate (FAIR/UNBIASED REVIEW)
Course layout was challenging and would be an amazing track if it weren’t for how poorly it’s been kept. It’s shameful and highkey disrespectful that this is the current state a Pete Dye design.
Greens… good… roll nicely with well placed undulation.
Fairways… horrible… mostly barren, no reward for good shots whatsoever.
Bunkers… might as well not even play them, no strategic gain whatsoever
Overall Design… could be a great track if it were just kept in better shape.
I don’t normally write reviews because courses should speak for themselves and I don’t really complain too much since golf has been a privilege to enjoy, BUT I WOULD BE REMISS IF I DIDNT WARN FELLOW GOLFERS….. Carlton Oaks is not currently worth its weekend rate. I don’t understand how better courses have been closed down permanently and this one has been allowed to continue on.
