The 11th is a TOUGH par-4 with great elevation and a false fronted green. Use enough club! Photo submitted by greebs on 07/20/2020

Yes, the 18th is a par-3. Get over it, and enjoy yet another perfect hole to finish your round. Photo submitted by greebs on 07/20/2020

The par-4 14th. A great example of what makes this course special. Notice the hillocks and hummocks on the left side of the fairway. Otherwise, this would be a mundane hole, but this addition collects tee shots and makes the approach interesting. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 08/12/2017

Makenzie called the par-4 16th the greatest two-shotter in the world, largely due to the three-tiered green. No room for error long, short or right. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 08/12/2017

The seemingly simple par-3 15th, which is actually a beguiling hole. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 08/12/2017

From behind the 11th green, one of the most difficult par 4s I've ever played. Requires two-to-three clubs up on approach. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 08/12/2017

Amazing course from tee to green. I heard a lot of reviews about the greens being super hard. I didn't find that to be true. Maybe I was just hitting it on the right side of the greens. They are fast but receptive to shots . Staff was friendly. I have been in the Bay Area for 20 years. Finally got out there to play and I will be going back for sure.
Great course. Very challenging
Pasatiempo is one of those courses that if you get a chance to play, do so. It is wide open on some holes, but very challenging on others. The greens were very tough but fair. The staff was very friendly. Overall, a great experience all around.
Wonderful golf experience
Can only afford to play once a year or so but this place keeps us coming back even when the fees are almost $300. Course conditions are super and the design is unparalleled.
Quality Mackenzie design
Stunning views and an overall amazing layout. Pricey but it's a bucket list worthy experience. Greens were punched a couple weeks ago so greens weren't in optimal condition. Challenging layout that requires careful approach shots. Would love to play here again when it's in prime condition. Members I met at the clubhouse were really nice and welcoming, staff was great as well.
Excellent Clasic Course
Was told by a good friend of mine that this course was a "must play" when he heard that I was going to be out in N. California. It was an excellent experience on a perfect sunny, calm day. Course conditions were near perfect due to some recent rains. If you appreciate old, classic layouts, this is a must play!
Nice, but not again
The staff and restaurants are fantastic, the views aren't that bad either and it plays longer than it looks.
Beautiful day on a very tough course
This is a beautiful course with spectacular views nestled into an area shaded a bit from the wind making it much warmer than the surrounding courses. It is beautifully kept and blends well into the natural geography. First rate all the way. Lots of sand and greens with many contours make it quite a challenge, but if any course around is worth the rather significant greens fees, this is it.
Impeccable
Everything about this course is outstanding. The layout is second to none, every hole is a stunner with superb bunkering and incredible greens. The staff was great, the clubhouse is not a work of art but it does the job. The conditioning was incredible even after getting rained on for three straight days. Do yourself a favor and play this course if you have the chance. I'd put it up there with the bandon properties in my book.
Low service for a 200 dollar round
I wasn't told until Check in that the cart was an extra $30.00.
Staff was not friendly.
Greens were disappointingly slow.
Nowhere near a $200.00 course...
Not for the faint hearted
I am an avid golfer who lived in Santa Cruz 30 years ago and played Pasatimepo before it was renovated. It's a beautiful course, but you may forget that as your well-struck ball rolls off the green into a deep sand trap. The greens are undulating throughout, and it is difficult to ensure that your ball will stay on the green. It was a humbling experience but, in sum, worth it.
A must play course for any golf lover!
I've been wanting to play this course for decades and finally made my dream come true. The course is nestled up in the forested hills above Santa Cruz and the views are amazing. Just like the course itself, what a layout!! I played a Monday and our foursome had no one in front, or behind us. A rare treat! The course was in great shape, especially the greens. They were perfect and trickier as heck. Now I know what the Pro's are putting on every week! The pin placements were tough that day, because there was a junior tournament earlier in the morning. You'll love them though, but its hard to get the ball into the hole due to the fast speed and undulations that are classic Alastair McKenzie. Like bunkers? You're in luck because there are hundreds of them in all shapes, sizes and angles...good luck...bet you go bunker to bunker like we all did! The staff was great and the facilities top notch. Be sure to ask the pro shop guys about Pasatiempo's connection to Augusta...it's a classic!
Can't wait to play it again!
A Course Worth Playing
I am one of those golfers that hates paying more than $40 for a round of golf. That said I did pay $170 for this round, very well spent. I am almost 69 years old and I walked the course checking out everything. The gentlemen I was partnered with had played the course before and he really helped me out. The course is just beautiful, fairways are in just great shape, bunkers have real sand, greens were fast but true and the tee boxes were the best I have ever hit off of. In my ratings for value I put excellent because walking this course you can see that it takes a lot of money to maintain it. As I always put in my reviews you get what you pay for and I got my money's worth today. These courses are really out of my normal expenses but once in a while I do it, I guess you could say one of my bucket lists. Highly recommend this course.
Pure Pasatiempo
Playing Pasatiempo overwhelms the senses of even the most hardened golf critic (me).
I can think of dozens of courses that I've roasted over the years for these problems:
A lack of a quality practice facility.
Safety nets protecting homes and roads too close to the course.
Fencing within the routing where holes dangerously interact with one another.
Parallel holes where stray balls can end up in your fairway.
Holes along roads.
A hole where the length and difficulty is out of whack with the par on the card.
A layout too short by modern standards to hold any prominent event.
Pasatiempo has all of these 'issues', and I could care less. The place is so special that it's easy to overlook such minor details.
Walking Dr. Alister MacKenzie's home course is simply one of the best days in golf. Each MacKenzie bunker looks like its own work of art. The greens might be the most interesting in the game. Some tough holes I may never solve - no. 1 and no. 11 specifically - but it sure is fun to try.
If Pasatiempo isn't on the itinerary of every bucket-list chaser coming to Pebble Beach, then they're not doing the trip right.
Thanks, Doc. We owe you a cold one in golf heaven for leaving such a treasure behind.
Met my (very high) expectations
Genuinely difficult course in good condition. Fair by tough. All should experience at least once. Saturday round, late morning, took 5hours. All staff were very helpful.
Awesome day on the Links with my Son
Weather was great, Course was amazing, Price seems a little high, but great facilities and friendly staff. Resturant was closed due to a private function, but had a beer in the Tap Room after the round. It was a memorable day.
Dr Mackenzie had a beautiful mind
This is a great and very challenging golf course. It makes you think about every shot and placement of shots is key. The course is in great condition right now as well. I'd highly recommend it, but bring your A-game!
