Good but not great

We had very high expectations as many people have told us about Rams Hill GC. Quite a few dry patches on the course and patch work on some of the greens.

Glad we made the trip as it is quite remote but probably wouldn’t go back.

Not worth the money anymore

This used to be fun for the money. They have doubled their price. Place is a ghost town now. Poor management. Feels weird when it’s empty. Why ruin a good thing. I could not imagine paying this track for 200.00 on a windy day.

Very disappointed in the conditions and value

I am very disappointed in the condition of the course, especially for the cost. If you are going to charge $150-$200 for a round in Borrego, the course better be in fantastic shape.

I will give them the tee boxes, bunkers, and greens were in great shape. Also, the layout is still spectacular. It is just aggravating to lace a drive right in the middle of the fairway and find yourself in a dirt patch.

Also, why does the drink cart not have the ability to make a mixed drink? Not everyone likes "cut water" beverages. I expect that at a cheap muni course, not a premium course (with a premium price).

You can play courses over in Palm Desert that are in MUCH better condition.

RyanMM,

I'm very sorry that you were disappointed in your experience at Rams Hill. I recognize that portions of select fairways are thin. Clearly not to our normal very high standards. Thank you for recognizing the that our greens, tees and bunkers are in great shape. I hope that you will come back at a later date. If you have any questions I would welcome you reaching out to me at harry@ramshill.com

Great course, wonderful layout

Really enjoyed playing Rams Hill. Challenging, but fair layout. Very quiet, serene setting. There were a few bare spots, but the course generally was in excellent condition. Sand traps were in good condition, greens rolled smooth & true.

Highly recommend

Rams Hill is a course that requires you to hit every club in the bag. We played 5 rounds in three days and it is a course you will not tire of playing. We played the Gold tees in the morning then would move up to the blue which gave quite a few holes a very different feel. The fairways are very generous with a lot of undulation which gives you a lot of uneven lies which is a fun challenge. The fairway bunkering requires you to think before each tee show. It lends itself to a risk reward setup on many holes. While to my chagrin, I was in quite a few of the fairway bunkers, at least the sand was nice and firm and the ball would almost always find its way to a flat spot where one could at least advance the ball. The greens were firm and true rolling at 11.5. This course mixes in long difficult par 4's and then will give you a look at birdie. It is challenging but very fair. I wouldn't say that this course is a "walking" course due to the distance between greens and the next tee box.

Tips: Keep the ball on the high side of most holes. Especially holes like 18 with a slope left to right with water along the right. Even the layup shot. Don't be afraid to club down on a few holes. The ball rolls a long way on the fairways. When putting take a look from both sides of the hole because it can be very misleading when only taking a quick look.

Memorable golf and hospitality

This is one of those courses you will always remember playing. Beautiful course with very gracious people running the course. Wish we had time after our round to enjoy dining on the patio.

The road to Borego is rough at first, not lit and no cell service along the route. So-tee off by 11 (in January) so you can finish your round and get back to CA86 by dark.

Great Course, slow play

I live in LA Quinta, but enjoy making the short trip to play this great course. I really enjoy the layout and the conditions of the course in general. The front nine played at a very good pace with hardly any wait. The back nine however played brutally slow. There were a couple groups in front of us that were playing the tips, by the looks of their swings the should moved up a couple tees.

Pace of play was very slow because they had a golf tournament in front of us. They should have informed us of the tournament when we booked.

We were not able to finish the round because of it.

Conditions

This is a nice course but not in the best condition. Pace of play was slow especially the back 9. Tired of courses charging big money and they don't marshal the the pace of play.

Bring your wallet

My husband and I have been coming to this course since 1984. We have been through all the different owners and iterations, ( Montesoro, etc.) The course is still beautiful and fun to play, but now the General Manager is just seeing how far he can raise the price before it breaks. We played today AS GUESTS, which is a discounted price and paid $310 for the two of us. Really??? Had we not been guests we would have paid $410!! Come on people, get real. I can go to Palm Desert and play gorgeous courses for way less AND have more places to stay and prime restaurants to visit. It’s Borrego. We won’t be returning at these prices when we have other desert choices. The guest rate we paid at de Anza was $89.00. It is a beautiful, fun course too.

broken promises

After the Tom Fazio redesign (rebuild) we home owners were required to pay $100 month to support the course. When this started, homeowners were allowed to play for $40 including cart. Now it is a 25% discount. Non resident rates are $145 on average, leaving the resident a fee of $107.50 for people who paid $200K for a home, pay $700 a month in homeowner dues, thinking when they purchased their home in 2002, that living on a fixed income was going to be a great value. Granted the Ted Robinson course was quickly reduced to a easy course with the advent of ProV1 and flex face woods, and the new course address those adjustments, it bothers me that the course fee has nearly tripled when the selling point of the new developer was Borrego Springs rates, not San Diego or Palm Springs rates. I've not even bothered to fly down in three years, and this year is in question with the airlines collapsing left and right, leaving the available seats at double of 2018 - 2019, plus ignorant rude abusive passengers on many flights, it doesn't encourage me to bother to go through the trouble of fighting to get on a flight, and pay Palm Springs rates, which why we chose to buy a home here in the first place.

Well worth the trip

Although it's quite a haul to Borrego Springs from San Diego, it was absolutely worth the trip. It's another world out there - Palm Springs-like mountain views and desert rough. And when the winds pick up like they did that day, man, that back nine gets LONG! But I loved it all!
