Great Course
First time playing, and really enjoyed it. Lots of backstops on the greens and it's fun to fire long on flags and watch the ball come back.
Exercise caution on the first hole if you're coming from someplace cold and you're not used to the ball flying farther in desert heat. Not a lot of room long, as I found out when I ended up in the desert.
Only downside, a bunch of members (two groups) jumped on the tenth hole in front of us as we were making the turn, and slowed the hole course down. We ended up skipping two holes to get in front of them.
Pace of play lightning fast on the front, so this was a bit of a let down.
Other than that, highly recommend.
Excellent course
great condition; friendly staff, great experience overall.
Certain bunkers are deep and can be difficult to get out. Must avoid downhill putts if you can.
The pace could have been better if they didn’t let a single tee off before us when he was supposed to be paired with us. He got stuck behind the group ahead and we had to wait more than necessary.
Returning in 2weeks
Firm & Fast
This course goes out of its way to make the set up difficult. The slope rating from the whites is 124 it should be 134 at least. Fairway bunkers everywhere with sloped fairways mown as tight as can be. Most of the greens are elevated with the sides shaved. The grass on the greens is a Bermuda hybrid they’ve designed for the desert and firm & fast is an understatement. You can touch the ball and putt is off the green. It reminds me of Pete Dye courses I’ve played. It was an experience but I would never drive two hours to play there again. Free tacos at 13 tee didn’t make it better & no drink cart.
Great Conditions!
The new fairways and work they did on the greens came out great!
By far the best conditions I’ve seen at Rams Hill. The time they spent over the Summer was well worth the wait. The greens are in great shape and are more receptive than they were last year. The new fairways look and play amazing.
Can’t wait to play it again!
10/10
The course was in great shape!!
The staff was friendly and accommodating 👍
The greens are PGA level.
Will be back again!!
Incredible property, excited for year round play!
New fairways and tee boxes are perfect. Ball suits up on perfect lies in the fairway and greens rolled PURE. World-class meals and service at the clubhouse as well. Absolute must for anyone looking for a special golf trip!
Perfect opening day
I played Rams Hill today on opening day. I absolutely love Rams Hill and always have. The improvements that they made this summer to their fairways is just short of miraculous. The starter told me that they completely redid all of the fairways with a new hybrid Bermuda grass. It was beautiful as good as condition as I’ve ever seen it, I’ve always said Rams Hill is out of the way, but I come from San Diego and it’s worth every minute of the drive. I cannot recommend it highly enough the free tacos at the Ram Shack and the free cookie are wonderful touches. Incredible golf course and friendly service.
A Hidden Gem
Sure this course might be in the middle of nowhere but it is extremely worth it. For a public course, it feels unfair that you’re able to play on a course with these types of conditions and facilities. Worth the drive for the free tacos on the turn.
Looking forward to new fairways
The course is great but the fairways are pretty beat up. They are going to be replaced this summer. The new greens are very hard and I’m hoping that punching them this summer along with time will make them more receptive. Can’t wait to see how the upgrades turn out in October.
As always a well kept nice course.
Great course layout. Fast greens but a fun challenge. A crown jewel in the middle of the desert that you would never expect. Nice friendly staff
A gem in the desert
Excellent tee boxes and greens, only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was that some of the fairways needed grass to be grown in
Bad Fairways
Looks like they lost their irrigation on the fairways. We were told that they were replanting the grass next year. They were in very bad shape. Love the layout though
Not in typical shaoe
The course layout is fantastic as always, however the condition leaves a lot to be desired. Looks like fungus got both the greens and the fairways. In addition, the greens were so hard as were the fairways that you could not stop a ball at all. Does it matter if you were coming in with a spinning wedge, sand wedge or gap? The ball was going to bounce. You had to literally land the ball off of the green in front for it to roll on

Great layout, not in great condition
This was my second trip to play Rams Hill and it is a wonderful layout and the scenery from almost every hole is spectacular. The greens were recently redone and are hard as a rock, but should improve with time. The fairways are not in great condition, but I heard they are getting ready to redo those this year as well. In a couple of years, this will be one of the best courses in California.
dhorn85 thanks for the review and recommendation. You're correct about the greens as they will soften. This summer we are embarking on a multi-million dollar fairway and rough renovation. Can't wait for you to return and see the results once we reopen in October.

Played this course as part of a marathon 9-rounds in 5 days trip I took to the Coachella Valley.
As someone from the Midwest, this course feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere. But start to finish, the Ram’s Hill experience is excellent!
CONDITIONS: Everything is fantastic. There are some comments below about the greens, and I tend to agree with them: it does appear that there is some sort of paint or substance helping the greens look “more green.” That being said. the greens are firm and fast, and a lot of fun to play.
There are some splotchy parts of fairways, but they seemed to be in areas where you shouldn’t be anyway. The bunkers were perfect.
VALUE: Very fair with a deal time. I’ve also heard the stay and play is a great value too.
LAYOUT: This course winds through the desert and some houses, and just the middle of nowhere in general. A great variety of 3s, 4s, and 5s. You’ll use every club in your bag. The course always felt challenging but never overwhelming. It was a lot of fun to play.
This is not a course to walk… take the cart.
FRIENDLINESS: Tacos on the back 9! You get 2 free tacos around hole #14. Get the pork… it’s excellent! And… AND… a cookie after your round. Not sure what kind it was, but it was awesome. Everyone one of the staff members was helpful and friendly. Also, they responded quickly when our cart died on the front 9.
PACE: A little slow, but just slow enough for us to get a good yardage and enjoy the views. Nothing offensive or distracting.
DIFFICULTY: Fun and challenging, not overwhelming. Fast greens, big bunkers, sloping fairways, false fronts… one or all of these will bite you, but in a fun “let do it again” kind of way.
klmgolf80, WOW!! thanks for the incredible and thorough review of the course. The green substance you saw on the greens is a pigment as we did not overseed the brand new greens. I hope you will make Rams Hill an annual stop when in Southern California. As for the cookie, it's an original recipe apple caramel cookie we bake fresh everyday. Glad you enjoyed.

Nice Facility in the Middle of Nowhere
Very nice golf facility, but expect a ride getting there. Nice clubhouse, grill/bar and practice areas. Course is tough (especially green complexes), but fair. Many holes look tighter than they really are. Quick greens with slope and collection areas. Good collection of short par 4s. We were fourth out in the morning, but unfortunately groups in front struggled and we're slow. Would play again and recommend.
jvaldahl, thanks for the nice review and nice comments. We cherish the peacefulness and beauty of the Anza Borrego Desert and believe that along with the wonderful golf course Tom Fazio created make for great memories. I hope to see you again soon.

ec1957,
I appreciate your comments and am very sorry we didn't meet your expectations. The greens are brand new and like all new greens are very firm but will soften over time as we airify and they begin to build a little thatch. There is no fungus anywhere. What you are likely seeing on the fairways is areas where ryegrass has transitioned out and bermudagrass is slow in filling. Last summer we embarked on a multi-million dollar project to replace our greens which was done and this year to replace all fairway, rough and tee box turf. When we re-open in the fall we expect pristine conditions and hope you will come back and check out the results of the renovation.
