No longer Torrey South

This once great course has been turned into some monstrosity only a tour pro can play and RARELY in good condition. This City has sold out the locals to the PGA and USGA. Even if you get lucky and find this place in decent shape it is almost unplayable. If you're not playing with construction noise on every hole you'll need ear plugs for the constant bombardment of F18's flying over. You'll pay 240 bucks to walk and I guarantee it wont be worth it. The city and administrators have destroyed this once great golf course.

Good Muni course

First time playing North since the reno. Got lucky to get a decent tee time. (Getting decent tee times online is similar to getting comic con tickets) The North course was in good conditon. Pace of play was slow due to an event that morning (It did not mention this during booking). I recommend that you play this course during the week. I still get peeved that the cart is $40 (not part of city operations). But I guess being a resident gets me a cheaper tee time so it's a wash. Still $92 to play a course can add up if you play multiple times per week.

First time

It was a nice course with great ocean views, but unfortunately while we were there they had shut down a couple holes for US Open renovations. I’d love to play it again when it’s complete.

This course is a rip off!

I was completely excited to play this course coming from the Carolinas! I knew the price of the round due to the website so I was prepared. I wasn’t impressed at the course. There were a few beautiful holes, but the rest I can get at home in NC. What was really disappointing was the employees and noise. Granted they were getting ready for the Farmers Tourney, don’t do it on the busy day of the week that people pay good money for! I’m played courses in the Carolinas before Tourneys and didn’t experience any of that. I guess I paid for the experience.

Yer right. 5 months out of the year they are setting up or tearing down the grand stands. Many people I play with from out of town are disappointed. Thank the new greenskeeper.

Long Rough

A combination of recent rain and preparation for the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open made the rough fairly long and difficult to find golf balls. The fairways also seemed to have been a narrowed making the course play a bit more difficult than regular times.

Overall the course is in great shape and you really can't find a better value for SD residents on a Sat morning. We had a 6:50 tee time and finished in just about 4 hours.

Wonderful experience. San Diegans love their course, and when people heard we were going to Torrey the next day, we received copious advice. We were warned not to fly the greens as they were like trampolines. However, that is my game and I was able to hold the greens well. Besides the ocean side breathtaking views, my greatest thrill was getting on 18 in two strokes!

Torrey North or South are Great Courses

I'm a local so the price is really good if you live in the San Diego City area. The views are always great at Torrey and the weather is usually perfect. The South course plays longer but still has its original greens as of 2019 even though they could be changing soon. The North has been completely redesigned and the 9's reversed but the design is perfect. The fairway bunkers are mostly out of play for the average golfer to speed things up a bit which is really good. The greens have a aeration system built in so the greens are always dry and fairly fast. Overall the courses are great and most importantly fun. Don't forget to stop at the bar and outdoor restaurant for an ice cold beer and a famous burger...

Torrey Pines North - My First Choice

I love playing at Torrey Pines, and the North Course is always my first choice. Although so much history has occurred on the South, it is celebrated as soon as you walk in from the parking lot.

It’s such a special place, with its ocean views, broad canyons, and the occasional snakes or coyotes.

The course is kept in great condition, and I play there any time I can.

Outstanding course and breathtaking views

Recently Played the Torrey pines north course with my dad I’ve never had a golf course exceed my expectations but this course definitely did Tom Weiskopf did an outstanding job on the redesign and the views over the rocky cliffs of La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean were unparalleled the course itself is relatively forgiving but still packs a punch especially when you get around and on the greens staff was to say the least were snobby and not very accommodating to be honest but I highly recommend playing this golf course especially if you get to play it in the afternoon around sunset the views are the best then if you want a fast round play early in the morning if you play in the afternoon prepare for a 4 and a half to 5 hour round but everything considered this course Ian a must play if you’re in San Diego.

Do not waste your money or time to play the South Course right now . If you are not able to get a tee time to play the North Course please go elsewhere . You will be very unhappy with your experience on the South Course . Between the construction on holes 15 & 16 and the general conditions of the course its a joke they are only giving you a discount of $ 20.00 . It should be half the fee right now . Please do your self a favor . Until the construction is completed avoid this golf course and find another place to play in San Diego . From what I have been told there are many in the area that will not charge the ridiculous prices that Torrey Pines does for green fees . They are living on a reputation that frankly is not even close to what it should be .

Horrible!

When it was all said and done I spent $340. I have never played a course in worse condition. They told us 2 holes would be closed. They did not tell us we would be treated poorly by staff and play a course that was completely under construction. It's absolutely shameful and they should be embarrassed of their product!

What a dump!

Torrey Pines should be embarrassed and ashamed of the way the course is. They told us ahead of time 2 holes would be closed but they did not say the rest of the course would be in shambles. Construction everywhere, dead grass roped off around half of the greens, and bathrooms closed. The worst part was the price.

$85 a piece to book in advance.

$232 green fee.

$20 ($20 discount per person usually $40 for old carts)

The staff was rude. They all seemed put out that we were there. Horrible experience. For a $300+ round I would have hoped for something positive, anything, and they found a way to mess that up.

What a dump!

I take a client to a new course every year and this year was Torrey. They told us two holes would be closed but did not mention the course is in shambles. In fact I have NEVER played anywhere near that bad. They should be ashamed and embarrassed.

Here is the cost:

$85 per person to book a tee time in advance.

$232 per person green fee.

$20 per person cart fee. Old carts, no navigation,.

Complete ripoff! They do not care about anything except your money!

Challenging - touch overrated perhaps?

Was super excited at the opportunity to play this course.

Customer experience prior to tee off was lacking. Particularly compared to the other San Diego courses I played, I feel there was no effort to customer.

Course is exactly as what you expect when you see this on tv. However, playing it I didn't get a buzz.

Very expensive as non resident too.

As a non resident - you’re Paying for the views, not for the course...

Torrey Pines is an iconic golf course, and Those of us old enough might remember playing the south on the old LINKS pc game back in the 90s!

Played with a bunch of 12 buddies on a golf trip from various parts of the states so we did not qualify for the resident rates. The greens had been aerated and there were no discounts as a result.

My review then is tainted by what represents value for golf. We payed over $200 each to play the North course. I believe residents pay much less. For $200 you are better off playing Maderas twice and going for a hike in Torrey Pines reserve.

Of course, as a course itself it is a lovely layout. It’s very playable for golfers of all skill levels, as there aren’t many trees. The rough is thick but not unplayable. The front nine is pretty straight forward. We played on a lovely day so wind wasn’t so much of a factor that it might otherwise be.

I particularly like the back 9 with the views of the pacific. The 10th is a straight par five right at the pacific. Heaven forbid playing this into a strong breeze! The par 3 downhill 15th is iconic of course, and the uphill par 4 16th is a fabulous golf hole with arguably one of the prettiest vistas in golf. 17 is a charming par 5 that is makable in 2 as well.

In all honestly despite the majestic views of the pacific I was a little disappointed with the course having just played Steele Canyon and Maderas. Nothing to do with the aerated greens. The fairways were not as manicured as I thought they would be for a course that I paid $200 to play. Reminded me of a $40 muni. Having said that the ball sat up very nicely and was easy to hit when laying on the fairway.

We had a meal at the 19th hole bar. Nicely designed building with great food and craft beer was available at reasonable prices.

Great end to the trip

Brought a group of 12 buddies to San Diego and we finished up at Torrey Pines North. Playing the South never really crossed our minds given it's getting a lot of work done this summer and it's also way more difficult. There were some high handicappers in my group and I know they loved the more forgiving layout compared to Steele Canyon and Maderas.

The course is a lot of fun to play, especially the back nine, which kicks off with a great par 5 straight towards the ocean. I love the 16th hole too that plays up the hill along the coast. The course had been aerated about 10 days earlier so greens were running slower than previous rounds, and it's too bad they don't give any kind of price break for that, but hey it's a busy place that doesn't have a problem booking up. I booked our three times about 75 days in advance and it was already filling up.

We stuck around for drinks on the lodge patio. All in all a great cap to the weekend.

Play At Your Own Risk

I honestly have very mixed feeling when playing TP south. I hate their greens, their pace of play is horrendous, and their staff is rude, especially the valley girls that work at the halfway house or work the drink cart.

I prefer the north greens over the south, as I have a very hard time putting on poa grass. The south is more expensive for no reason other than it's the "Championship" course.... The north has much better views and hole layouts, in my opinion.

Something to note is that the city owns the golf course but a private company owns the lodge, carts, and concessions. Therefore, the private company can charge an arm and a leg for everything! Their carts are $40 per cart. So, if you're a single you will pay $40. If two random singles are paired together then one person has to pay $40 for the cart and get $20 from the random person they're paired with. Horrible system.

Overall, if you're a resident of SD and like to walk, TP south is a great course! If you're a nonresident and like to ride, then go to Maderas, Omni La Costa, or Aviara.
