Don’t go
The course is not being maintained adequately. Looks like they are out of money. The rough is dirt with some weeds. The Ocean Course was excellent. The Conservatory could be great but needs a cash infusion.
Among Nicklaus' best accessible work
A lot of "ocean" golf courses grant no more than a token peek at the water from a couple holes. The Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort is not one of them. With as many holes on the beach as any in Florida, it is one of the state's most scenic courses that is not private.
Since a renovation a few years ago, the Nicklaus layout is its best self - plenty difficult but with some concessions made to the fact that its proximity to the ocean makes it a windy spot. The recent removal of long rough means that if you're on grass, you're either on fairway- or green-length Paspalum, which is maintained to a very high standard.
The back nine remains a highlight, with the last four holes bringing the golfer to the beach for the stretch run after initial teases at the first tee and ninth hole. It's a fitting end to a momentous resort golf experience.
The archetypal pre-Recession golf course
These days, most of the best golf courses are minimalistic and naturalistic, meant to look like they were discovered, rather than built. The Conservatory is the polar opposite, with enormous greens, dozens of bunkers and expansive mounding all over the place to hide the fact that its land was once flat and relatively featureless.
Still, if you can embrace the excess of it all, you will enjoy it. The scale of the course is impressive, and if you play the right tees (don't even think about going back to 7,800 yards), you'll find it playable. April 2022 green conditions were good, with some patchy areas in the fairways starting to come back. Hopefully the summer is kind and things will be back to their spiffy norm by fall.
WOW!! Beautiful setting!
This is a must play course here in NE Florida! The views of the Atlantic Ocean from at least 6 holes is unbeatable! The course conditions were way above excellent for this time of year. The greens weren't super fast, but they still rolled out...perfect! The wind off the ocean makes this course very challenging. Gotta have a low stinger in your bag on some shots. I can't wait to play this course again!
Layout
Beautiful course. Plenty of traps if you feel like the beach. Layout is set to make you think and is manageable to make your way thru the course. Had an absolutely great day!!
Fantastic conditions!
Course is in terrific condition and the staff goes out of their way to make you feel right at home. Awesome breakfast overlooking the beach then a short walk to pick up your cart. This is our second trip here, love this place and will definitely come back again!
A++ Experience!
Amazingly beautiful golf course! Beautiful weather and even more stunning views. This course provides multiple holes with beach and ocean views providing one with the experience of a lifetime. Would recommend to any golfer looking to play a great course, at a good price, with breathtaking views.
If ocean view is your priority
While the course gets many rave reviews for its ocean view holes, not many of the holes were truly memorable. The par 5s were the most interesting holes, the 6th with its buttonhook green, the 13th with its risk/reward 2nd shot over water and the 18th which finishes with an uphill approach. The par 4 ninth is a long hole (especially if into the wind) also with the green sitting up above the fairway.
Warning - beware the love bugs in late September/early October. They can make the round quite unenjoyable.
On-site Hotel was very nice.
Challenging course
While it doesn’t have the ocean views of its sister course, the Conservatory is an overall stronger course. Don’t recall any holes that you could “take off” and still make par. Great variety of holes. Course conditions were excellent.
What a blast!
21 hcp- so many bunkers but miss them all with my 180 yd drives. Love the look and design, especially par 3’s. A pleasure to play, practice and enjoy the lush fairways.
Don't overlook this one for the Ocean Course
The Ocean Course at Hammock Beach is terrific and there's a reason why it's a draw, but do not pass up a chance to play the Conservatory. It's terrific and frankly it's more playable than the Ocean, meaning you don't have to be quite as precise with all parts of your game.
It's challenging for sure, but playing it the day after the Ocean I realized what I was missing, having passed it up all these years.
The par 3s were great, the course was in terrific shape and overall it's a solid golf experience. Highly recommend it.
Enjoyable Day!
I had the opportunity to play the Ocean Course, and it was a wonderful experience. Having lived in Florida for several years, I am kicking myself for not making it to the course sooner. Conditions were perfect, and nearly every hole had a different element to it that made them unique and fun. The ocean holes were well done, and not jammed in there as some ocean courses are to get the most out of the ocean views, and the rest of the course meandered through a very nice neighborhood. With the generous resort style fairways, none of the residences came into play, which was nice! There are several sets of tee boxes on the course and allow even the longest of hitters the chance to hit drivers down the fairway. This is certainly a MUST play if you like playing ocean courses and enjoy golf!
Wonderful Golf
This is a wonderful layout to enjoy. A caddie would be a big help because there are LOTS of bunkers. Conditions are excellent bunkers are all well maintained as they need to be. The layout by Tom Watson is interesting and playable. The only negatives are it is expensive and it suffers some from being the ugly sister of the Ocean Course. Range was on mats. They ran out of range balls. Not up to the first rate operation it is. Play it if you have the opportunity
Great experience
If you have the opportunity do not pass on this course. It’s rates are omensurate with this course and all that comes with it. Operation is first class, signrin, range, starter etc. Layout is terrific. It is a very difficult course but not a ball loser on every shot. Most shots have an option to play safe. If you want a good score you will have to be brave. Conditions subperb. Get there if you can
Awesome Course!!
I played this course during an amateur tournament and it was awesome! I love the layout, the condition of the course was fantastic for this time of year. The course did have a bunch of bunkers washed out by all the rain, but I didn't end up in any of them. Greens were on the slow side, but rolled true. I would love to play here again...sooner rather than later!
A Must Play
Brilliant course. Firm turf, a variety of shots needed, nothing tricked up. Greens not that receptive yet but give them time. Par 5s and Par 3s are excellent. #9 is one long par-4 if the wind is up. Driver/3 wood didn't even sniff the green.
It's expensive to play, but completely worth it. Great facilities. Breakfast sandwich was delicious.
Newly renovated Ocean Course makes a bold statement
The Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort really is an ocean course now. Thanks to in large part to Hurricane Matthew, which blew down trees and flooded the course, and the subsequent renovation, the course has better ocean views from its six ocean holes, the practice areas and the clubhouse. Beyond that, though, the new paspalum greens and fairways work very well together. Course conditions are already flawless after the recent reopening. And practice facilities, with a large grass range, short-game area and putting greens, are tremendous as well. As far as the course is concerned, wide fairways and little rough make the Ocean Course very playable, even in windy conditions. The great variety of holes and the fact that there aren't many true ocean courses in the U.S. make this one pretty special.
Hammock Beach's other course shouldn't be overlooked
While the newly renovated Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort is getting much of the attention, The Conservatory, which is also offered by Hammock Beach, shouldn’t be overlooked. In fact, it’s probably a better test. And while it isn't on the Ocean, it's certainly picturesque in its own right. More importantly, the quality and variety of holes is outstanding. With water on half the holes and some challenging bunkers, it's a terrific test. Word of warning here, don’t play too far back because long approach shots can make for a long day. This is a really good test of golf and plenty enjoyable.
A pure treat
Keep in mind, the Ocean Course was ravaged by two hurricanes in a 13-month span. Crazy. But with an aggressive gameplan to get the place put together properly, they knocked this one out of the ballpark.
Simply, the course is tremendous. The layout is fun with a smattering of both long and short holes and the ones alongside the ocean (6 in total that face the beach) are as breathtaking as anything you'll find in Florida. Hands down.
The staff was a joy to meet with and everything on the day, from beginning to end, was first class. It also helped that the day was a Perfect 10 as far as weather.
Can't wait to get back there.
