Challenging and Beautiful
This is a must play course when in the Kona area. The course was in outstanding condition and very challenging, but still playable for all. ( High slope and rating from all tees) There had been allot of rain the prior week so the fairways, rough and greens were perfect. The views and raw beauty of the area adds for a very memorable day. And….the pace of play was great at 4 hours.
Challenging
Some foreknowledge as to how to avoid the sand traps to get around the course would make a lot of difference in scoring.
Excellent Challenge
Mauna Kea is an excellent course, very pricey but well maintained and very challenging. One drawback was that we were paired with an older couple who were unable to maintain the expected pace of play or even close to it. The ranger wanted us to let others play through which normally makes sense but, in this case, would have done nothing except kept us on the course forever and delayed the 2 of us. The older couple finally decided to retire after the 11th hole and we zoomed through the remaining holes, never seeing anyone behind us. Pairing us with someone of such unequal quals and then trying to penalize us by having others play through made it very stressful for us, especially considering the money we paid to play.
Fun design, bunkers need love
The course was super fun to play, fairways and greens in great condition. Unfortunately the bunkers are in very poor shape, and they’re EVERYWHERE.
For a course that protects its countless elevated greens with countless bunkers, the fact they are super hard, full of gravel and sometimes wet (somehow?) was a real sore spot.
If they sort that out it would be worth the full price. On a GolfNow hotdeal it’s definitely worth playing.
Go for the view
Hard to say the value is there for the price, but the course is in great shape and views are spectacular
Greens a bit bumpy
Small landing areas. Tough deep bunkers for a resort course
Five Star course and service
Only Pacific Dunes in Bandon ranks higher than Mauna Kea for me. Great course design, exemplary service from the minute you enter the property.
Greens need some work but lovely course
Great course. Fairways in great shape. Greens were fair and very slow. Great round overall
