Nice mountain course with great views
I heard a lot of good things about this course before I played here including it was the second best public course in Maryland. That being said, it was a very nice course, but the conditions did not quite live up to expectations. The greens were much better at Fantasy Valley - the other course owned by Wisp. We played there the day before and was expecting Lodestone to be just as nice.
I really liked the layout of the course. I like courses where the holes are spread out and not stacked up on top of each other. It really makes pace of play better.
The staff was very friendly, and it is a nice bonus for them to put bottled water and towels in the carts for you.
We came up for a buddy golf trip with 8 golfers and will try to make this an annual trip. We had a great time and the weather was perfect.
Great Hale Irwin designed mountain course
If you like mountain courses add this one to your list. We played this track on a Saturday and Sunday in early June.
We were welcomed by a friendly staff in all aspects including the cart attendants, pro shop, starter, ranger Joe and the cart girls. We were playing on a early season package that was booked through the resort thus we received a reasonable rate compared to the regular season greens fees.
The very challenging course has 6 sets of tees ranging from 5185 yards to 7475 yards and a 142 slope rating so there are many options for all types of golfers.
The cart path through the entire wooded course is done in cement and there are some sparsely located mountain homes and gorgeous views.
The many bunkers were very playable with a fine sand. A yardage device is a big help especially for club selection from the there are opportunities to hit 3 woods and 5 woods from the tee.
The large greens are full of slope green, providing for some interesting up and downs and risky 3 putts if you end up on the wrong side of the green.
There are a couple split fairways, a
biarritz green with a swale in the middle, a long downhill par 5 with a Deep creek lake view, and there is the par 3 17th green that sits atop a rock ledge.
There are some videos of the holes available for viewing on the course website so you can get a feel for what you are in for. All in all its a favorite mountain track that one can look forward to playinh.

Lacks senior tees and overpriced
This course is well designed with some great views.
However, it is a mountain course and 6,300 yards is above the skill level of our senior group.
Likewise it is grossly overpriced for retirees.
We made annual trips to Deep Creek for golf outings for several years.
We will not return until senior tees (less than 6,000 yards) and a reasonable senior rate (less than $50) are established.
Play Lodestone instead
Front 9 is tight and not that interesting. Holes 10-14 are really good though with nice views and a fun layout. Last 4 holes are average.
If you have the chance play the other course here, Lodestone. Far and away a better course and 4-5 star layout and conditions.
Overall not a bad course but was left underwhelmed after playing Lodestone yesterday
Wow
Great shape, great views, lots of tees, huge greens and just a fun overall experience. If out this way take time to play. I was very impressed
good course long day
Course is very nice with some great views of the lake. Enjoyed the day - only problem was it was cart path only because of a lot of rain recently. Cart path only on a course like this is painful. My suggestion would be to cancel if you find out its a cart path only day and wait for a better day to play. Cart path only resulted in a 5.5 hour round. On the good side - the course is beautiful. Plenty of fun and challenging shots. I do wish they would cut the high grass areas that are around so many of the bunkers. If you hit into the high grass area your ball is gone - almost impossible to find a ball in that stuff. The bunker placement makes the course challenging enough - the extra penalty of dealing with the areas around many of the bunkers just slows down play. Greens are great - not fast, but lots of slopes to challenge even the better putters. One last thing that was great - the cart girl! What a beauty! She came by at least 3 times while we were on the course. Seeing those legs one more time may be the biggest reason to make a return trip.
My star ratings are based on the conditions I played - wet and cart path only. On a dry day I would probably give each category an additional star.
Fantasy Valley
A beautiful and challenging mountain course with some breath-taking vistas! Straight drives are a must on many holes. Carries over water add to the difficulty. Very enjoyable day of golf!
Amazing scenery, perfect course
Lodestone had it all. To begin my round when I arrived they had a cart ready for me. There were free range balls and the short game area was superb. It rained to start and during the wait the staff was friendly and polite. I got some goody at their small but well stocked clubhouse. The course itself was in excellent condition. The course was fair and the bunkering beautiful and plentiful. The course was the most beautiful I've ever seen, between each hole was a nice little drive through beautiful settings. Not the most walker friendly but not bad. A few blind tee shots but nothing cheesy. Great course, worth the 69$ twilight fee and some.
Not bad for $39.
Greens were smooth but not very fast. Fairways and tee boxes were average. Sand traps had nice sand but had some rocks and also had weeds growing around the edges and corners which looked terrible, little more care for this course and it could be a really nice course. Until that happens it's still just a good enough course. $39 twilight rate is fair.
Amazing course
Played this course for the first time and was not disappointed. So many great mountain views on a very well laid out track. Only a few major elevation changes but not enough to take away from the course. Beautiful day and enjoyed the drive in with the gorgeous homes on the lake. It was cart path only the day I played because of 3+ inches of rain within the last few days also attributing to a few of the bunkers being washed out but I have no doubt that would be taken care of within the next day or two so I look past it. The girl in the clubhouse was extremely friendly and helpful. 79 dollars is a little steep for any course in my opinion but this course made me feel a little better about paying that much as nice as it was and as much fun as I had, playing one of my best rounds of the year so far. Will play again.
Remake failure
Hadn't played this course for awhile and not since they changed the layout. Their are now 6 par 3's, some of which make no sense, since you drive by the old tee boxes and fairway to get to the new tee boxes in the middle of the old fairway. Tee boxes not in great shape, but could be because of all the rain and recent aeration. Course tough with some narrow fairways and water. Driving past over grown and unused holes, takes away from the natural beauty of the old course. Needs a lot of work.
Meh
course is overrated for cost and most of the hole layouts are not too thought out. clubhouse is a strange circus tent. starter was grumpy due to the fact that we were almost late for our tee times at no fault of our own. woman in tent had issues with cashing rain checks from previous year. not her fault either. front nine is slap together with some old hole tee boxes gone and new hole layouts mixed in. saw cart girl on hole 2, then never again. no snack available at turn due to fact that is 300 miles from circus tent and closed building near turn had no looks of a food drink place. probably a storage building. 10-12 are nice holes. other than that, won't be back. play thousand acres, Oakland, lodestone or even alpine lakes. more friendly, better golf course experience and at least can eat and drink something.
Good course with elevation changes
The only reason this course was marked 3 stars on conditions was for the previous four or five days it had rained and the fairways and greens were saturated. That being said the greens rolled very true and surprisingly quick with the amount of water they had been exposed to. I would have loved to play under normal conditions because the maximum amount of roll out on any drive was about 5 yards. The two bunkers I did play out of durning the round had great sand and were a fair test.
Fantastic views
Played it first time, but really enjoyed. View was just fantastic. The only sad part was the rainy weather for some part of the course. Also, the address on the web site is for the WISP resort and not for the golf course, although there are road signs for the Lodestone. Definetely will be back...
Fantastic course
This was our first time playing this course. It was in great condition, both fairways and Greens. You needed to place your drives well on several holes to avoid streams and traps. The greens were very challenging for us with many greens undulating quite a bit. They were in fabulous shape and rolled true, if you can read them. While our scores were up, our excitement was up as well. Challenging but very enjoyable.
Excellent mountain course
Absolutely majestic mountaintop setting. Course can be quite difficult from the tips, but playing the right box makes it very fair and enjoyable. A little pricey but worth every penny. Staff and the starter were outstanding.
Very nice course
Hole 10 thru 14 are beautiful , the view is extraordinary.
Good deal
Excellent course. 2nd time playing and they changed a couple of holes for the better. Cart attendants (older locals) are always a treat.
Amazing!
Great deal on GolfNow but full price would be worth it. The views are fantastic. Conditions were great even after heavy rain the week before. The new driving range with free range balls was a great added bonus from last year.
Staff was friendly and helpful.
Overall, compared to higher ranked Bulle Rock, Lodestone offers better views and conditions. It's nearly a hidden gem as many people don't make the trek out to play it, but if you are in the area or want to road trip, it's well worth it!
Magnificent Course!!
Majestic, expansive course. A must play if you are in the area!
