About Gull Lake View Golf Resort

Since the 1960s, the Scott family has transformed 2,000 acres in southwest Michigan into one of America's largest golf resort communities. Situated in the appropriately named Augusta, Michigan, near Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, Gull Lake View Golf Resort has become synonymous with affordable packages where golfers stay in comfortable villas to enjoy six different courses, all from different eras. The East and West courses were built in the mid-1960s and mid-1970s, with the two Stonehedge courses added later in 1989 and 1994. The family bought the Bedford Valley, a classic course known for hosting tournaments, in 1988 and then put the feather in the cap, debuting the linksy Stoatin Brae by Renaissance Golf Design in 2017. Those who fall in love with the experience can buy real estate in one of several neighborhoods.

Great staff, great shape

I’m struggling to think of a time when the staff was as friendly and helpful as the pro shop, starter and halfway house staff. The course was in great shape and it’s a nice layout. Given the price and the reputation, I expected a more interesting and challenging course. With no water and few actual hazards, it was almost a little boring. If you’ve never played links golf, I recommend this as a good example but I wouldn’t put it among the top 10 in the state.

Great course

The layout was challenging, providing an opportunity to try different shots and clubs (other than driver from par 4 tee). The starter provided great playing tips. Will return again, especially with a great price from GolfNow.

Played both of the Gull Lake View courses on the same day. Started on the East and then played the West. The two courses felt quite different from one another, with the West course being more open on the front 9, and elevation changes coming into play on the back 9. Although overall I think the East is a great course, I think the back 9 on the West was my favorite 9 holes on the property.

CONDITIONS: The course was in good shape. The greens rolled well and were true. The fairways and tee boxes were in great shape, as were the bunkers.

VALUE: Received and “all day play” rate which I thought was a great value, and would (will) definitely do again!

LAYOUT: Played the White tees (6,059). The front 9 has a few doglegs, but for the most part is bunch of straightaway mid-length par 4s. The par 5 #5 requires a good drive. The #6 hole is a long par 3, but provides room to miss. The back 9 is nothing like the front. Starting with the downhill #10, you get elevation changes on almost every hole. #12 is an uphill approach shot. And holes #14 thru #18 all use elevation to challenge your shots. #16 was maybe my favorite, being a “less than driver” par 4 that you don’t want to be on the right side of.

If you’re okay with a lower body workout, this course could be walked.

STAFF: The pro shop was very helpful.

PACE: Went off as a single, and had 2 separate 3somes let me play through. Thank you!

Played both of the Gull Lake View courses on the same day. Started on the East and then played the West. The two courses felt quite different from one another, with the East course being much tighter and putting a premium on accuracy and shot placement off the tee. That being said, I felt the East course was a lot of fun to play!

CONDITIONS: The course was in excellent shape. The greens were fast and true. The fairways and tee boxes were in great shape, as were the bunkers.

VALUE: Received and “all day play” rate which I thought was a great value, and would (will) definitely do again!

LAYOUT: Played the White tees (5,545). Wasn’t sure what to expect given the shorter yardage, but everything exceeded expectations! This is all of “under 6,000 yards” you want to handle. Really good par 3s, and fun/strategic short par 4s. The front 9 is good, but the stretch of holes from #12 thru #17 was fantastic. Actually, #9 and #18 are the only forgettable holes.

Though I took a cart, I would walk this course. But I would only do so if it was the only 18 holes I was playing that day.

STAFF: The pro shop was very helpful.

PACE: As the first one off the tee for the day, the pace was excellent! I was able to take my time (and maybe replay) and enjoy the course.

Played both of the Stonehedge courses on the same day. Started on the South and then played the North. The two courses do feel substantially different from one another, with the North being more straightforward… on the front 9 at least.

CONDITIONS: The course was in good shape. The greens ran a bit faster on the North than they did the South. The fairways and tee boxes were in good shape, as were the bunkers.

VALUE: Played at a reduced rate because of my first round on the South. After playing both of these courses I would hope the North has a slightly lower green fee than the South.

LAYOUT: Played the Green tees (6,350). Interesting note, and they told me this in the pro shop as well, the North course has 6 par 3s, 6 par 4s, and 6 par 5s. I didn’t really notice this as I got into the round, and ended up enjoying the extra par 3s and par 5s.

The front 9 plays more open and allows more room off the tee than any other 9 on the property. The back 9 plays a bit like the South course in terms of the demands off the tee, and the tighter tree line. Hole #11 is fun and picturesque. The tee shot on #15 took my lunch money. I thought the finished 3 holes on the North course were a great way to close out a round.

STAFF: The pro shop was helpful.

PACE: As a single, a few groups did let me play through… Thank you!

Walked

Played both of the Stonehedge courses on the same day. Started on the South and then played the North. The two courses do feel substantially different from one another, with the South being a more vigorous test of golf.

The South course differs from the North mostly in that the trees lined the fairways much tighter and there are more elevation changes to contend with. Water isn’t a factor on the South course, but the trees and hills are enough to ruin your score.

CONDITIONS: The course was in great shape. The greens were fair and consistent… though a bit slow given recent rain. The fairways and tee boxes were in great shape, as were the bunkers.

VALUE: Given the challenge and condition of this course, I think this course is priced appropriately.

LAYOUT: Played the Green tees (6,200). As noted above, this course is tightly tree lined. This is noticeable right away with the dogleg right on #1, and long par 4 of #2. The tee shot on #4 is tough, as anything to the right is going down a steep hill with trees all around. The tee shot on #6 is also tough with a tight tree line to the left. The back 9 adds elevation changes to the challenge.

Took a cart for the round that I played. If this was the only course I was going to play that day, I would have walked.

STAFF: The pro shop was helpful.

PACE: I was the first one out on the course… so pace couldn’t have been any better! That being said, given the difficulty of this course I would guess things could get slow here when the tee sheet is full.

A Very Good Course That Needs Faster Green Speeds

The excellent pace of play for our twosome was less than 3 1/2 hours. The tree lined fairways were wide enough to accept almost all tee shots. No water hazards. Excellent bunker sand. A terrific variety of elevation changes. The yardages on all four of the par 3 holes were within 10 yards of each other. It would be better to have some greater differences in the yardages on the par 3 holes. With faster green speeds, this would be a great golf course.

Excellent layout and great views, especially on holes 10-14. Tiny practice green and a pretty funky range. I played on a discounted rate. Definitely would not pay the full rate to play there. I know it’s prime time of the year, pace of play was pretty bad.
