Mountain Creek Resort
About Mountain Creek Resort
Mountain Creek Resort is a four-season destination in Vernon, N.J., just an hour outside of New York City. It features a waterpark; the 27-hole Great Gorge course, which was purchased in 2018; the Treescape Aerial Adventure Park, home to zip-lining, climbing obstacles and rope walks; and a Bike Park of 52 trails that is loaded with jumps and 1,000 feet of vertical drop. The course was part of the old Playboy Club in the 1970s and 1980s, attracting famous names such as Dean Martin and Bob Hope for a game. It’s a beautiful property with wonderful mountain views and elevation changes. Guests can stay in the Appalachian hotel or enjoy more space and privacy in a one- to three-bedroom townhome rental at Black Creek Sanctuary. Both accommodations offer outdoor pool and hot tub facilities.Facts

Hidden Gem
Didn't know about this course until 2 weeks ago when I saw a $26 round with cart on Golf Now.
Course is the old Playboy Club course set in the hills of Northern NJ.
It is a 27 hole course alternating between the challenging Quary course cut into an old quary with many elevation changes throughout in a picturesque setting. The Rail 9 is set over an old railway track and the Lakes 9 which is probably the most challenging of the 3. All are set in a beautiful valley using the hillside and valley floor to wonderful advantage with many elevation changes and doglegs. This is a shot makers course which rewards ball placement rather than simply just bombing away. It is superbly maintained and has challenging fast greens requiring a deft touch.
This is not a walking course unless you are in fantastic shape and are prepared to be really tired at the end of your round.
Overall this is possibly one of the best values in NJ for golf. I hope this review doesn't lead to hordes coming in to play because its really nice to have discovered one of the true "hidden gems" of NJ golf! Hard to be selfish with my fellow golfers though. Come play this course.
Great Course
Conditions are great, course is not overly challenging but far from a walk in the park!
Free warm up basket, great pace of play, greens hold your approach shots well but are very fast while putting, fairways are well maintained!
My only complaint with this course is there is no drinking water anywhere on it! The cart girl is around often but there’s times when a few water jugs would be handy!
Well maintained, very scenic, 27 holes it will be a new favorite!
First time playing
We played lake and quary. Course layout was great. Most of the greens were in great condition.
Well worth it!!
Upon arrival we had our doubts do to the sad state that the old Playboy club has become, but don’t let the shabby old hotel sway you!
We were early for our tee time, the staff was very friendly and courteous. The round included a small bucket of balls to warm up with.
Still with our doubts we waited our turn to approach the first tee. Once you get to the first tee box and look down the mountain on the first hole, you realize you’ve made the right choice! The views from any hole on this course are beautiful, and there’s 27 beautiful holes to experience!! Course conditions were top shelf! Fairways short and soft, the rough was even well maintained! Greens were FAST, and challenging! The bunkers did need better sand but they were not atrocious.
All in all my whole 4 some was very impressed with the entire course with only one real complaint! There is ZERO drinking water on the course, and the cart girl is scarce!!! Bring your own water or beverages for sure! Other than that I can’t fund a bad thing about the place we will surely return!!
We enjoy this place.
Course is in good shape, rates are reasonable, and pace of play was excellent. (Four seniors played 18 in 4 hours). Also like that range balls are included in the greens fee.
Good times
Had a great day on the Links! Course in great shape
Good Value
We played on a day they where expecting rain and didn’t get any. The course was not crowded so the pace of play was great. We played Rail/Quarry today. Both sides are a good test of golf. Conditions are really improving. Definitely worth the trip!
Fantastic views
I love playing in this golf course. Beautiful layouts and friendly staff.
I recommend Great Gorge
GREAT course
Great Gorge is in wonderful condition. From tee box to green you couldn't ask for anything more. My partner & I enjoyed everything about playing here. Highly recommend playing this track!
Fun.
Hadn’t played here in 25 years but had a morning off and booked a tee time on GolfNow. Reviews of good conditions were accurate. Very good fairways and greens. Terrific layout with dramatic views and changes in elevation on many holes. Well worth the $47 I paid.
Course condition is getting better
The fairways and the greens are getting better to the original forms after a few years of course closed. The pace is good which we finish in 3 1/2 hours.
Great Course
Beautiful course - Staff was so friendly and accommodating. Greens were fast and true - tee boxes and fairways in great conditions. Right next to the old Playboy Club. Remember the time when my folks used to bring me there back in the 70's. The course is in a lot better condition than the Playboy building.
Players make the course
The course has finally dried out and is starting to get tougher which is great. Greens have always been super and now are really rolling . I just wish the people who play here would learn to replace divots and repair ball marks on the greens so I can give this course a 5 star rating. My only other beef is that the owner refuses to open the kitchen early so those of us who play early are left to fend for ourselves. The starters Emile and Dan are first class and really make playing there feel like a private club. So happy this place has reopened!
Enjoyed this place.
Always enjoyed playing this course. Beautiful country setting that is set away from highways, etc. Pace of play was great, and it's inexpensive compared to other layouts in the area. We will be back.
stands the test of time
only really good courses keep you looking forward to playing them, this one does! great layout, views to die for, very nice club house. that said it has its needs- cart paths need help- bunkers better than most in area but need sand (you thinks sand is gold in nj) could use some smart drainage help but remember we just had wettest 12 months I ever seen.
keep the price fair and keep moving it in a positive direction
thanks see you sunday
Slow
Greens were slow and pace of play was extremely slow; took almost 5 hours!
Fairways and cart paths need repairs everywhere. This course does not drain well..bunkers are full of stones... not much improvements since the course reopened
Beautiful layout
I enjoy the round of golf every time I play there.
The course has beautiful scenery
I love the layout of all three courses. And well maintained
Thank you for reviewing the course. We apologize for the delay of play during your round. This is by no means the standard we strive to achieve. With an uncharacteristically full day, we work hard to accommodate everyone who visits our course and allow our guest the chance to complete their rounds. With that in mind, we are working to best control pace and allow everyone to finish in a reasonable amount of time. We will continue to look for ways to improve. Thank you for playing Great Gorge at Mountain Creek Resort - Lake/Quarry Course. We hope to see you again soon.
