once was enough

Great course. I enjoyed the layout. It allows for a lot of different club selections and u can play most holes in many ways so u can get creative. The staff were great. The only cons on the course 1) the course was seem d to be over watered. Many of the fairways had standing water from sprinklers because it hadn't rained in weeks. Some of the valleys it was hard to get a stance because of the mushy conditions. 2) price is not reflected by the course. U are paying for the surroundings and history which is worth a one time spend in my opinion. 3). No driving range just a net.

One thing I will say is that the greens are typical of Donald Ross and extemely fast and hard to read those subtle breaks.

Over all I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone to play atleast once more if u have the money.

Fun classic course

Played the Grove Park Inn course on a stopover in Asheville. I was a single paired up with another single. The course was in good shape. Greens had been punched recently, but rolled nicely. Fairways were in good shape, although fairly soggy. Tee boxes were kind of beat up, however. Overall the course was in very good condition, although they appear to overwater since this area is in a major drought and it was still very soft. Course design is very interesting. It's a short course with most of the challenge being the greens, typical of a Ross course. Lots of sloping fairways. Pace of pay was a little slow initially as we were behind a five some and a slow foursome. At turn, a marshall invited us to skip ahead to get past the bottle neck and then we were able to pick up the missed holes with no problem. Overall, a fun course to play and I'd come back again.

Omni Grove Park Inn, history collides with autumn.

arrived right on time with a 3:30 pm tee time, the drive to the hotel on the mountain was worth the trip in within itself. The historical Donald Ross design spells fairways of a time long gone, yet meshing so beautifully with the fall foliage and scenic mountains standing guard over the horizon. The course plays pretty short despite the overwhelming softness. Don't plan on any bump and runs, you'll ned to carry the ball to get it there. The par 5's are all birdie holes, with the last of the trio representing a good chance for eagle as a good drive could leave less than 200 yards into the green nestled down by the road. Playing in late afternoon allowed me to finish off my round before dusk, and just as the skies started illuminating red, I grabbed a fresh brew to watch the sun vanish behind the mountains. Spectacular cap to a spectacular afternoon, all the way down to all of the great customer service received at ever turn. Played in right around four hours, but I could've played a lot faster. The course's beauty and the views of the surrounding mountains are enough to cause even the most focused golfer to step back and enjoy the view.

Nice Course

Very nice course. The greens were very fast and I like that. The staff that I came in contact with were also nice. The only drawback is the price. I used GolfNow and that was the only way I was going to play it.at $65

Disappointing Experience

Was surprised at the relatively average condition of the course the property its located on is a highly rated resort/hotel. Most disappointing was being unable to play the back nine as the staff directed us to reply the front nine since some hotel guests had taken a 2 hour lunch at the end of their first nine holes and then returned to complete play later preventing us from moving forward to the back nine. Perhaps if the amenities at the course had been open, those golfers might not have had to retreat to the hotel for lunch in the first place. The staff was very friendly and accommodating as much as they could be given the circumstances. I would not return to play here again.

Grove Park Inn

It's been dry here lately but the course was pretty soft and wet, too much so for me. I would like to see fairways a little more firm, and greens also.

Started at 3 PM and pace of play was very good, finishing in a little over 3 1/2 hours.

Layout is great, not very long but with the fairways as soft as they were and elevation changes it plays longer than the card. Rough is long and being able to advance the ball is very dependent on the lie you get. Playing from the fairway instead of the rough is big.

Classic Ross Design

Stayed at the resort and played on a Wednesday morning.

Course was very wet and soft even though there hadn't been much rain. Greens were soft but rolled pretty true, not overly fast. Course is a classic old Ross course, not long at all, but you can't let your guard down on any shot - so a really good challenge. A course map on the card or hole diagrams on the tee boxes would have been a big help - there are 5-6 blind tee shots and more than a few bunkers you can't see.

Shot 84 with one mulligan.

Meh

I didn't really know how to review this. Is this a nice course no question. Is a a great deal for a hot deal at $39 for the round. No question. Is it a $100 course. Heck no. Nice layout. I am a low 80s guy and shot an 85 here. Left some on the course with first time playing. Conditions were what I expect from a Country Club type environment but Augusta National is safe for sure. Plenty of dead spots. Tee boxes weren't all grassed. Fairways were nice but apparently no one knows how to use sand in NC. Lots of divots in the fairway. If this were a $50 course it would be a 5. As a $100 course its a 3. Very playable and nice but if I'm playing near here there are other courses that would be a better bang for the buck. I will play again so don't take this as negative. Hope that helps.

Disappointing round

Course design was of course great, but I was very disappointed by the conditions. Many tee boxes were beat up, a number of greens were in tough shape, e.g. lots of divots and impressions, tire tracks through soft areas (by grounds crews because the areas were roped off), more that it's fair share of crab grass and poor drainage on a number of holes made a number of approaches very spongy. Not what I would expect from a top flight course. I suspect some of this is due to opening up the course to the public which allows hacks that don't know how to simply fix divots, to damage the course,.but the course also isn't getting the maintenance it deserves.

Nice course

Played early in the morning so pace was great (1st ones out). Course was a bit muddy in places but not bad. Rough is a killer so stay in the fairway.

Great layout

Course conditions were great. It is a bit on the soft side. Maybe because of over watering for the hot temps. Only negative is some of the mowing staff showed no regard for players. But the day was filled with incredible views and challenging shots. Definitely an experience to have at least once if visiting the area. Especially if you can get a hot deal from GolfNow.

Great conditions!

The course was in very good shape, quick greens, lots of slope. Very short. No driving range to warm up. Playing with someone who knows the lay out is important. You see Donald Ross in the green layouts but not as many false edges as many of his other courses. The starting staff are excellent at their job. At $40.00 to $50.00 it's worth it ...one time. I would not pay any higher. Once at that price was enough for me.

Great Course - 5 Stars

Great golf course, perfect fairways and greens. Being from Florida I had trouble with the bent grass greens with the breaks and speed. This is a very tight course and demands a good tee shot. Great time !!!

overpriced

There are several reasons for the tip top condition of this course, one being that there is almost no one playing on it !! Locals have been priced out !! When greens are fast, some holes you can't keep the ball on the green. IMO they ruined the greens with their overhaul a few years back. 5 hr. 20 minute round because of 3 and 4 putting by good golfers. No one in front of us. WAY overpriced for anyone but the rich.

Treat yourself!

This one is worth the money!

I play here as often as I can. The course is beautiful,

but the staff is incredible! If you've never experienced

"premium treatment" , you should visit this place.

The course is in excellent shape because everyone cares.

Thanks again to everyone!

Great course

Played this classic Donald Ross design after two days of torrential rains. It was wet, but draining well. Terrific, classic Ross course. Fabulous views of the surrounding mountains and Grove Park Inn above the course. You can feel the history as you play. Ross, Jones, Presidents and so many others have played here. Greens recently aerated and coming along nicely. Walked and pushed my cart. Front is not flat, and has good sized hills as you climb uphill from 5th thru 9th holes. Back nine is extremely hilly, so be ready for the ups and downs, especially the ups. Makes 385 yard holes play like 450+ uphill. Not sure if the scorecard reflects the true yardages - my GPS was telling me the course from the Black tees was much longer, so take a GPS/rangefinder to check your yardages and adjust accordingly, especially uphill. Great, friendly staff. Must go to the Sunset Terrace at the Grove Park Inn post round for a drink and the magnificent views.
