Worth the price
Course had been closed for renovations until September. Fairways played soft and greens were extremely slow. Great test of golfing ability especially with swirling winds. All par 3s required a carry onto the green. Layout involved both long and short par 4s, several doglegs, water hazards and plenty of sand. High handicappers will struggle because greens were small and required a high ball flight to stay on the greens. Bermuda collars made chipping precise. The walk up 18 is very scenic.
Not in top condition
If you want to score you must put ball where you have shot to the green, I know that sounds simplistic but this is target golf. The greens are small making it more of a challenge. The day we played there was mist with occasional drizzle. The course was wet and cart path only. We still played in 4 hrs. Because the course was over seeding and wet, the greens were very slow. This is an expensive tract, I have not made up my mind if it is worth the money. When I checked in the young guys behind the counter were making fun of some lady golfer who had just teed off. I did not think that was appropriate- maybe it was just a slow day for them. This may sound strange, while the personnel was cordial it did not seem like they cared whether you played their course. Almost forgot, this course runs thru tall trees and forested real estate the only hole with water view is the famous 18th with the lighthouse.
Not a $100+ golf course
Paying for name not quality of course, should have gone with fist thought and quit after first hole, greens were slow and spotty. Greens got a little better but not much. Had to wait on every shot on back 9. Hope it gets better after redo. Staff was great, saw drink cart 2 times on front and once on back as we were 30 feet from green on 18. Glad there was water on course. The facility is very nice. This course is worth no more than $50.
Coming Home
I have lived on Hilton Head for close to 30 years and grew up in Sea Pines Plantation and would like to say i had a memorable experience yesterday playing the course I grew up playing every day for the majority of my childhood. The Sea Pines Resort put a beautiful new clubhouse overlooking a redesigned practice facility that completely blew me away. A relaxing feel greets you as you walk into a county club style locker room, friendly staff, and beautiful scenery. We played our round in a little more than 4 hours and had cocktails in rocking chairs as a late afternoon thunderstorm approached. A relaxing monday coming back to where i grew to love the game of golf.
Great course, excellent facilities, terrific staff
Probably my third time playing Heron Point over the past few years, and it's in the best shape I've seen it. The new greens are perfect; they look artificial from the fairways and there wasn't a blemish on them. The overall course was in great condition as well, especially considering it was the end of the summer. The staff is terrific, greeting us at the car, getting us set up quickly, and meeting us on the way in to clean our clubs (Donnie), all with a smile and friendly conversation. Out on the course, we played as a twosome, and we never had to wait. The cart service and snack bar were top-notch, and the new clubhouse is a really nice facility. There's nothing not to like about Heron Point.
Great Experience!
The Staff were very helpful. The New club house is spectacular!
YOU NEED TO PLAY HERE!!!!!!!!
I know Harbour Town is the main attraction at Sea Pines, but this hidden gem takes the cake for me. From the new Clubhouse to the staff, this place is a true golfers dream! The staff was extremely nice and more than willing to make our experience better than we hoped. The golf course is magnificent and an absolute great layout. We are going to make sure this is on our list to play each year when we venture to HHI. The food in the clubhouse is excellent as well, I ate the Pastrami Reuben and WOW it was good!!!!!
Go to Heron, you will not be disappointed!
Must play!
I really enjoyed this course! The new design is perfect, the greens are the best I've played in a long time. I was in awe with the pristine conditions of the course and the clubhouse. From the moment we pulled up to unload, we were treated like we were members. The staff took an interest to make sure we knew where to go and had everything we needed. I wish more courses were this nice and operated in the same manner.
Change is good
Wow. I can't believe this is the same course I played a few years ago. Upon entering the brand new clubhouse and locker room I felt like I was at an exclusive high end private club. The place is gorgeous.
Last time I played Heron I thought the greens were a bit overdone. The course went through a significant redo and now the greens roll among the best in the Southeast. The course can be enjoyed just as much by the mid-handicapper and still provide a great challenge for the single digits. The folks at Seapines got it all figured out and are providing a truly 5 star experience. I'll be back!
A Must Play
The newly renovated design was flawless. Greens were firm and rolled beautifully. This course has gone through its ups and downs over the year but the greens staff needs to be commended on their superb efforts. These were some of the best bermuda grass greens myself or any of my playing partners have ever putted on.
Staff at the entire facility was of five star quality. Sea Pines has done a marvelous job!
Bucket List
I have had the good fortune of playing Harbour Town multiple times over the years but have never taken that for granted. This course welcomes you into being a part of history from the moment you view all the past champions and trophy case in the newly updated clubhouse, until you walk off 18 and say goodbye to the famous lighthouse. Every staff position makes it well known that your experience is of their utmost concern. Despite it's popularity, Harbour Town feels like a private club with consistently pristine course conditions. It is truly a unique golfing experience that makes it a bucket list in my opinion. Harbour Town has all the pieces from history, public accessibility, staff service, architectural beauty, course condition, facilities, great food, and anything else you may need. If that isn't enough for you, watch or attend the RBC Heritage and listen to the appreciation that PGA Tour Pro's have for Harbour Town. Happy Heritage Y'all.
Great Re-design but Rock Hard Greens
This course has improved drastically since the "Sea Marsh" days and the layout is excellent. The course is in primo condition except the greens are rock hard...much firmer than the Ocean Course that we played the day before. Maybe it's the newer greens that need to grow in a little but it made front pin placements nearly impossible to reach. Otherwise it meets the standards one would expect from Sea Pines Resort.
challenging course. classic dye.
played this course and its sister course (the ocean course) in one day. it's amazing how different the two courses are. the ocean course was very soft while heron point was classic pete dye design... elevated greens that were hard and fast.
the quick greens were very challenging, and the course itself is no picnic.
still, this is a fun course and different enough from the ocean course to be worth playing both.
one of the best courses around
played harbour town as part of a yearly golf trip. it is without question one of the best courses i've ever played. aside from pebble beach, i can't think of any courses that compare.
it was very helpful to have a forecaddie to help with shot selection and also to provide cool information about the course and its history.
the back nine is especially tough, but the whole course will challenge your entire range of skills.
17 and 18 are two of the most beautiful holes i've ever played.
we played the week after the RBC was in town so the bleachers were still up, which was cool. the course was closing down for renovations shortly after we played, but i can't even imagine how the course could be better!
A true resort course
Ease of play, pace of play and condition all made for a great day of golf. Like its sister course, The Ocean Course, it is a residential course but this course seemed to be more playable with less OB constantly coming into play. I would recommend this course to people interested in a fair test of golf on a course in great condition.
A PGA Tour icon and no better finish in golf
My golf game is in no way compatible to the challenges of Pete Dye's target-style golf courses like TPC Sawgrass and Harbour Town. Having said that, it's such a neat round of golf to play. Each shot, while often intimidating, commands your full attention. From turning the corner on the dogleg par-4 16th to reveal the Cailbogue Sound until finishing up in the shadow of the famous candy striped lighthouse, this is one of golf's great walks.
We played the course a couple weeks after the RBC Heritage event, and the greens were still ultra-fast, and the lush overseeded conditions couldn't have been better. It blows me away they're going to entirely re-seed the course this summer. It hardly seems to need it. But expectations at Harbour Town are as high as ever. A new clubhouse opened this year and is a fitting base for one of the great stalwarts on the PGA Tour schedule.
You'll need tidy wedges, a savvy punch-out and a descriptive yardage guide to make it around here, and a great attitude. Embrace this most unique design style that is still able to challenge the game's best. And be sure to swing away on the par-4 18th. The fairway couldn't be wider, and you'll need to move it to have a chance at this ultra-intimidating approach.
An upgraded, more playable Heron Point
It's been a few years in between rounds at Heron Point, and boy, what a tremendous change since my last visit. The brand new clubhouse, also shared by the next door Ocean Course, is five-star all the way, with a classy locker room suitable for the pros and a great veranda overlooking the course. They've also added a destination golf school and the practice area is expansive enough to hit all the shots (it's a bigger, better practice area than nearby Harbour Town).
As for the golf course, over the last year or so, the greens have been softened a bit to be more receptive to the resort golfer. Pete Dye's redesign in 2007 made for some small, undulating putting surfaces that could be difficult to hit if you're hitting a mid-iron or wood into them. Now, they've been expanded by an average of 1/3rd and mid-handicappers will have a much better chance on their approach shots.
The design is, to some degree, a little brother to Harbour Town. Sharp doglegs and narrow fairways require a great deal of accuracy over power. The finishing hole is vintage dye: a dogleg left par 4 around water to a small, well-protected green.
We even noticed a certain Pittsburgh Steelers starting QB teeing off on No. 1 the day we were there, enjoying a little off-season leisure time. Star power is definitely a regular occurrence throughout the Sea Pines development and with such great conditions and facilities it's easy to see why.
Great Course
Got bored after first few holes... But then it slowly began to improve, each hole better than the next. 17 and 18 are two very impressive holes. Every part of the course in great condition, greens very fast and very narrow course with small greens, but no ridiculous putts needed. Forecaddie was very friendly, just had a few issues spotting golf balls. Slightly slowed down our pace of play having a fore caddie, but was helpful giving yardages. Definitely suggest to anyone traveling to Hilton Head.
Great inland holes to go with the famous 18th
The 4 par threes are perhaps the best I have played. The 4th is a classic Pete Dye par 3 with water all along the left. This hole does a great job of challenging the good player but giving less confident golfers a chance to bail out on the right with little to no trouble. The 9th is a great short par 4. The fairway is relatively wide but the overhanging trees can get in the way of your approach. The green is really something special as it is V shaped with a bunker in front and small pot bunkers splitting the legs of the V. The 13th is another interesting short par 4. The drive is deceptive and the green is really interesting. The fronting bunker is extremely deep and the green itself is sort of Mickey Mouse shaped. The 14th hole is almost a mirror image of the 4th but IMO you get a much better view on the 14th with the elevated tee. The 17th is the last of the great par 3s and introduces you to the Calibogue Sound. The green is a small target, especially in the harsh winds that you confront once you approach the water. The finale is one of the most famous holes in golf and lives up to the hype IMO. The views are unbelievable and the second shot has some great strategy to it. The green is isolated out in the water but you are able to bail out to the right to avoid the H2O. Overall and amazing course and an amazing experience to play a PGA Tour stop.
Breathtaking clubhouse
The experience was quite impeccable. from the practice area to the food/beverage all was fantastic. The greens ran smooth and firm and the fairways were lush and tightly cut.
