Great course and very fine personnel
Great day on the course all staff was very friendly and very helpful. Nice place to play while visiting
Colonial WBurg Golf Pit Stop
I got to play by myself and appreciated that. I didn't know the course since it was my first time, but it was easy to follow. Very nice crew at all the spots. The MINI Caddy Drink Shack with ice and water was amazing, My home club doesn't have that. NICE! To be able to hit range balls and feel like I was a member made me feel special. Now about that score of mine. I'll be back and do better!
Plenty of shade
96 degrees weather was unbearable but the course had lots of shade .lots of hills, fairways with moguls! Pretty fast greens. Sand traps firm. Lots of raised greens. Fairways m, tee boxes and greens in good shape. Have to think about where to hit your shot. Fun layout. Super friendly staff. All the Gary’s and Larry were great!!
To Much Rain
Played this course after very heavy rain storms. We had the first Tee Time of the day. It was cart path only (for good reason). There was water everywhere, most sand traps were completly full of water. Staff was working very hard to get the course cleaned up and the sand traps pumped out.
The course was in great shape. The fairways were wide and it was a wonderful round of golf.
Nice layout, but poor condition for the price
I was really excited to play the Gold Course after all of the hype, however I came away pretty disappointed.
Initially the staff did a great job welcoming me onto the course etc. but once I had paid and played, nobody wanted to even ask if I had a good time at the end of my round - a stark contrast to the friendliness exhibited at Independence and Royal New Kent. The clubhouse is very nicely appointed, if quite formal feeling - it's clear where the greens fees are being spent.
The course itself was "good", but it didn't wow me in the same way Royal New Kent did. The course condition was below average for a course in this price range - many of the tee boxes had lots of divots, and the number of unrepaired pitch marks and dead spots on the greens was pretty woeful (maybe rich people don't fix their own pitchmarks). All of the bunkers were wet (we're currently experiencing a heatwave, so I'm unsure how that happens without intentional watering). There was standing water on some of the fairways, and lots of sodden patches, making approach play less pleasant.
The green complexes were a highlight, and ran very true, but the greens were running pretty slow - particularly compared to other courses in the area. It felt very "target golf" in the hole design - with not much innovation or varying design from hole to hole. Hole 16 is a beautiful design, and the closest many of us will get to the TPC Sawgrass experience. The overall course design felt fairly pedestrian and like many other parkland courses I have played for half the price.
At $200 per round, I expect to be blown away - and the combination of slightly tepid staff, below average course conditions, and repetitive hole design didn't leave me feeling that impressed. This was a fun course to play once, but I won't come back at this price. There are plenty better courses in the area for sub-$150 that I would rather play twice than play here again. The white tees also played exceptionally short - actual played yardage was only 5,988yds compared to the stated 6,248yds - so you may want to consider moving back a tee box.
Must Play
The gold course is a solid track and must play when in the area. Conditions are superb and the layout gives great opportunity for creative shots and risk/reward. The par 3s alone are amazing each has a similar design but its own character with great use of the water features. Play both Green and Gold the same day for a great deal using their replay rates.
Underrated Gem
The Gold gets all the glory, but find the Green course in prime condition in the summer and play with the replay rate? You will be very satisfied. Quality conditions and a great layout without the feel of being in a resort. If you are coming to Williamsburg to play the gold, avoiding the green is a mistake.
The Green is a Hidden Gem
Everyone talks about the Gold course--which is the premier course; however, the Green is a really nice course that is worth trying. All nature (no houses), and mounding down almost all the holes, which helps keep your ball in play. The course was in excellent condition, although the bunkers were a little inconsistent, but that was the only thing. The greens were fast and there were only two holes which were cart path only. The Green is definitely worth trying and I even like it better than the Gold...it's one of my favorites.
Simply Awesome Course!
The Green Course was a wonderful experience! Greens and fairways were in great shape and the staff was fantastic! They treated you like family. Glad we chose to play this course on my bucket list. The front 9 was CPO due to the prior day rains, but they allowed us to do 90deg on the back 9. No real soggy spots on the course. Overall fantastic choice for last week's golf vacation.
Fun course and nice staff. Play was a little slow
I played the green course which is at 651 S England street. The gold course is at the addrees where GolfNow sends you no matter what, so make sure you pick the right address for the right course. The gold course pro was nice enough to have a shuttle swing by and take me to the green course. Once I got there, staff was friendly. There is a range with mats and a good selection of targets. Course was fun and in good shape. No restaurant on site, but there is a snack shack with sandwiches, hotdogs and assorted adult beverages and other hydration off thr 4th/13th boxes, as well as bathrooms.
Great Layout
Perfect little brother to the Gold course. A must play when in Williamsburg.
Beware "specials"
I played on an "Eclipse Special." 80 dollars after noon on eclipse day, with a pair of eclipse sunglasses thrown in. Nice course, but not really worth full price. I should have known: they had just punched the greens. Hey....at least I didn't pay full price for dressed greens. Just would have liked to have known.
On the bright side, the staff is great, the venue is gorgeous, and the course is classic....just solid. Not gimmicky, not too hard, but not easy either. Just right! Aside from the greens, the course was in fine early spring shape.
Friendly Staff
Great layout and conditions. Staff was as friendly as always.
Will go back
Unfortunately the course was a swamp when we played. My friend and I were in on business and didn't know it had rained as much as it had. Not the courses fault but it was just water logged. I would like to go back and play it when the conditions are more favorable. Overall the course was nicely manicured. Bring extra balls because if you go out of bounds your ball is gone.
