Course could use some TLC
Golf course was in horrible shape. Fairways, tee boxes, and sand traps were needing some serious maintenance. They were in very rough shape. Goose poop was so bad that on a couple of greens we couldn’t even putt because there was so much poop on the greens. Not much better around most of the greens and some fairways especially where there was a lot of geese and water. Greens were in good condition and staff were very friendly and helpful. Prices need to be cut in half until course is repaired.
Course needs some serious TLC
Course needs some serious TLC. Fairways, tee boxes were overall in terrible shape as well as sand traps. Almost like the maintenance crew has have given up trying to maintain and take care of the course. The goose poop was so bad around some and on the greens we couldn’t even putt. For the price you pay I doubt we will return. The staff were very pleasant and helpful but the maintenance of the course was very poor. Overall I would only give it a 2 or 3.
Nice course
We enjoyed the course. Pretty hilly. Some fairway repairs in process. Staff very friendly and helpful.
First time playing The Green
Enjoyed the layout of the course, tree lined with some rolling terrain. Golf staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. However, the condition of the course was poor. There were bare spots on most of the fairways. Tee boxes were almost bare and dirt only on many of them. For what is considered something of a resort course this was quite disappointing.
Good Greens - Some burned spots in fairways
I like the Green course at Golden Horseshoe. The greens were in good shape and the course was overall pretty good but several fairways had some large burned out areas.
Enjoyable round.
Early spring conditions
Tee boxes were sand or dirt, not much grass. Greens were covered with fungus rolled flat, I’m hoping these conditions improve with warmer weather. The only food in the clubhouse to be found were cold pre wrapped sandwiches and wraps. The staff was very friendly and the service we received from the outside staff was some of the best I’ve ever experienced.
Great course sometimes let down by wetness
I play here in VGSA events and practice/regular round several times a year and sometimes you get a 1/3 of the bunkers with 1/2 a foot or more of water. It's quite frustrating hitting shots and when any veer towards these traps it's a guessing game if you'll find it the 'pond'.
Great Day
Top notch from start to finish. Friendly staff, generous fairways, great greens and a great value. Only negative in January is the bar and restaurant were not open. Pace of play just under 4 hours.
Save some green by playing the Green
The Green course at Golden Horseshoe will always fall short when you compare it to the incomparable Gold Course down the road. On its own, though, this is a really good bargain that delivers a nice resort experience for the average golfer. It's a sprawling layout roaming through the woods, so there's little outside distractions like traffic noise or homes to take away from a four-hour commune with nature.
Really Beautiful
I loved the layout of this course. Big, sweeping, rolling fairways. Every hole borded by big southern pines and woods. We played in late afternoon in the Fall, so the scenery was classic southern Virginia. Just great. The course is challenging but fair for an 18 handicap like me. I would love to play this course again on our next visit to the area.
The facilities were less than expected; the bar was closed on a Friday afternoon. No snacks available except for the snack stand on 4/13 tees. Starters and staff very friendly.
The biggest negative was ball marks on the green!!!! The greens are nice and soft, and ball marks were deep. Every green had many of them not even attempted to be repaired!!!! A beautiful, nice course, nice property, nice facility, and ball marked greens like a bad muni course. Golden Shoe, you gotta do something about the ball marks! Make people sign a pledge or something. Great course, and maybe the worst ball-marked greens I've ever seen.
Great Hilly Layout
Love
Th hilly terrain and fun layout. Course was quite wet after heavy rain, but I was just happy they allowed us to play. Our group enjoyed this course more than the Gold.
Must play if in the Williamsburg / Virginia Beach area.
Cloudy & Misting, But Playable
It was cloudy, cool and misting the entire round, but it was not cart path only, and the course was not terribly wet. I have read some of the reviews that indicated the course was in bad shape. I play this course a lot when I'm in Williamsburg and I just don't see that. Yes, there are some browning of the grass between tee boxes and fairways and on some of the mounding, but other courses have similar. July and early August were terribly hot in Williamsburg, so the local courses took a beating. The fairways at The Green were in good shape, as were the tee boxes and most of the bunkers (although a couple had small pools of standing water). The greens are bent grass, so clearly the course has been watering them and they are a tad soft. And, players have not fixed ball marks (that's on players), but I didn't see any of the fungus described--only the unrepaired pitch marks. All in all, the course is in good condition. Finally, the staff at The Green is superb! From the cart person to the starter to the Pro Shop personnel, everyone is welcoming and engaging. I've never--in the 20+ years I've played the Golden Horseshoe (both courses)--ever experience rude or unfriendly staff.
Great course and nice staff
Very nice course especially for the money. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Needs some MAJOR TLC
Where to start…. The layout of the course is wonderful. Challenging approach shots and bunkers that will drive you crazy. Very fun to play… but only when the conditions are perfect. The greens resembled the Martian surface. Mold has plagued the greens and members have failed to repair pitch marks rendering any putt outside of 10 feet susceptible to craters. Then there are the tee boxes…or the lack their of…
