Meadow Lake Golf Club

Since 2009, Saskatchewan licence plates have carried the slogan "Land of Living Skies" and under all that sky, golfers can find more than 200 courses. A planned golf tour to the east began with a stop at a course the Saskatchewan Golf Association (SGA) had chosen to host their three day provincial Senior's Championship, the Meadow Lake Golf Club.

This Par 72, 18 hole parkland style course opened in 1952 and at some point, Les Furber, one of Canada's homegrown golf architects was brought in to add his touches to it.

Your round starts in the well‑stocked pro shop, which occupies the ground floor directly below a spacious restaurant that overlooks the course. There’s a tidy lineup of 2019–2021 Yamaha carts to choose from, all looking ready to deliver a steady, comfortable ride for your round. Staff went out of their way to welcome and accommodate competitors all three days of the tournament.

Facilities to work on your game include an expansive driving range and a fair sized practice putting green.

Each hole provides at least three spacious and groomed tee boxes, giving golfers the option to play the layout from 5,307 yards up front to 6,353 yards from the tips.

Hole 1, a 375 yd, Par 4 offers an inviting view as it rises gently uphill before bending to the right and feeding into a nicely proportioned green that tilts from back to front. The routing flows smoothly from hole to hole, and every new turn brings a new set of challenges. Anything from landing your tee shots in the right spot, to firing precision guided approach shots into expansive greens, all while navigating bunkers and water hazards that seem to be placed in areas that mis-directed shots will find. The elevation changes on the course are subtle but do add a little bit of extra character.

Trees line both sides of many of the groomed fairways and the landing areas are comfortably generous. There are clearly preferred sides of the fairways that offer better lines into the greens, rewarding players who choose their angles as carefully as their clubs.

The greens and greens complexes were meticulously prepared for tournament play and were kind to good shots and rewarded great shots. If you could get your approach shots to settle near the pins, it helped to take some of the mystery out of navigating the slopes and swales that are found in varying degrees on every putting surface. Throughout all eighteen holes, the greens maintained a dependable consistency in pace and speed. Meadow Lake GC has many memorable holes but 11, 12 and 13 form a trio of fun and engaging holes through the heart of the back nine.

The Meadow Lake GC grounds staff presented the course beautifully, offering a layout that tested your skills while remaining fair, not relying on tricked‑up features to manufacture difficulty. Friendly staff, a great restaurant and an exceptionally well maintained course earn the Meadow Lake GC high marks.

The course would benefit if the town would pave or better maintain the dusty gravel road leading to the course, a section so rippled that washboard is the only fitting description.
