Evergreen Golf Course
What's in a name? The answer may be lost to history but the Evergreen Golf Course likely earned its name from the abundance of conifers that dominate the terrain, true evergreens that help shape the character and corridors of the course. Since 1957, golfers have carved their way through the jack pines and spruce trees. In 1988, Les Furber left his imprint on the property that gives the course its present layout.
As a par-72, the course offers some flexibility: 5,219 yards from the Red tees, 5,889 yards from the Gold tees, and a full 6,371 yards when played from the Blues. The scorecard lists an optional Blue/Gold combination that plays to 6,115 yards.
The course opens with a pair of straightaway holes, and finding the middle of both fairways will go a long way toward easing you into your round. Fairways didn't feel pinched as there is a fair amount of room to land in. I only found a paltry 5 FIR, but managed 10 GIR so the rough was more than manageable to play from. Two of the more memorable holes on the outward nine are 6 and 8 as they share a very large double green...two fun holes.
The back nine opens with a challenging Par 4, 411 yd, dogleg left that plays into a green that appears to back up against the tree line. My favorite hole on the back nine would be 16. A shortish 335 yard, Par 4 that bends gently right and has a number of great character trees that run up the right side. The kind of trees that make you pause mid‑hole and take in the way their trunks are twisted, like old guardians watching over the landscape.
Greens are extremely generous in size and come in a variety of shapes. Approaches into the large greens wasn't difficult, and depending on the pin placements, one had the option to run the ball in or airmail it.
Undulations, swales, and ridges on the greens add to the enjoyment as you work to navigate each putting surface. Pace and speed was consistent throughout. Hazards are few, I believe I counted around 15 bunkers in total and there are no water hazards to be found.
Evergreen Golf Course just hosted the PGA of Saskatchewan Championship on July 27/28, so overall conditioning of the golf course was to a high standard.
From the friendly environs of the pro shop to the layout and conditioning of the course, the community of Nipawin has a golf facility they can be proud of.
