You won’t find love songs or great films written about Hartford, but the Insurance City is something of a sleeper when it comes to golf. The surrounding region is home to nearly 80 golf courses, with a good handful of pleasant private clubs mixed in with dozens of public-access facilities.
Like many other private country clubs, the International Golf Club & Resort 45 minutes west of Boston is in the midst of a transition. Once only a private club, the International has gotten creative in attracting new members and new business. While the Pines Course remains exclusively private, the club recently began offering public tee times after 9 a.m. on the Oaks Course, its newer, more forgiving Tom Fazio golf course.
With $1 million in capital improvements plus new management, Goodwin Park, a 27-hole municipal course in Hartford, Connecticut, is making great strides.
The Oaks golf course has a more scenic and pleasant resort feel of the two designs at The International Golf Club & Resort, located roughly 45 miles west of Boston. Once word gets out that The Oaks is open to all, the Tom Fazio design could make a run at the nearby Red Tail Golf Club as Boston's premier public playground.
