Apostle Highlands Golf Course

Not busy in September. Played in about 4 hours. Spectacular views from more than half the holes. They had just aerated the greens, but they’re very challenging and many are sloped. Had a great time there! Very friendly staff!

This is the first time we played the Highland coarse. I enjoyed the layout of the coarse . There were plenty of holes where you had to hit to specific areas to get a good look at the green. Fairways were dry due to lack of rain in the area so you got good roll if you kept it in the fairway. Roughs were deep and stopped the balls if you were off line but playable . The greens were inconsistent in speed since some hadn’t cut when we played. The fairways needed work with weed control and an overseeing this fall . All in all we enjoyed the coarse and would play it again.

Course is in rough shape partially due to the drought this summer, but definitely lacking some upkeep due to maybe lazy staff or lack there of. Carts were old and worn out didn't have much power and not even enough to accommodate the people that were playing. When asking the employee in the pro shop how the course conditions were he said I have no idea I don't play golf. Then we tried for a bloody Mary and he said we have no vodka, judging by his appearance maybe he drank the bottle the night before, he did not look prepared to be at work at 10 am. Course has a lot of potential just needs somebody to put some time and effort into making it better. When when we finished and went to bring the cart keys back there was a note on the door saying he was out getting range balls, but left the bar hand pro shop completely unattended

We played Apostle Highlands as part of a getaway to Bayfield, Wisconsin with friends. Upon arriving to the course you are greeted with a scenic uphill drive to the clubhouse and some beautiful on-course condos. The pro shop staff was accommodating and was strict about adhering to Covid guidelines. We were given a course guide to help us along. Once on the course it was disappointing to say the least. We were told the greens went into "shock" and it showed. Numerous dead spots made putting challenging as well as shaggy fairways and clover-like rough. If this review was solely based on the golf course nobody would go. Now the fun part, some of the views were absolutely breathtaking. The tee shot on #3, a downhill blind par 4 started things off. All you can see is the beauty of Lake Superior as you hit your shot and it was amazing. Other holes also provided scenic vistas including looking back from the 9th green/clubhouse to a split-view of Lake Superior. It is unfortunate that the course had to be in such rough shape because this definitely could become a destination course with some improved course maintenance. While the layout was definitely challenging with numerous blind shots, it could be managed given the Lake Superior vistas.
