Hanna Golf & Country Club

The first course on a short golf trip to southern Alberta was the Hanna G&CC. I hadn't golfed here before so there was no reason to pass up the opportunity. I arrived fairly early and the only vehicle in the parking lot belonged to the fellow that relieved me of my green fee. He gave me directions to the small fleet of 2015 Yamaha golf carts.

Varying concepts of a golf course in Hanna date back as far as 1935. Then in the early 1980s, the town had Les Furber's Golf Design Services (GDS) do a complete redesign of the nine hole course. In 2006, the golf course had GDS bring another nine holes to fruition.

A quick look at the scorecard suggested I play the white tees which reaches out to 6103 yards and has a rating/slope of 69.4/117. The tee box on the par 4, 349 yd, first hole was a little shaggy. Not being familiar with the hole, I elected to take a 5 wood off the tee and try to split the fairway some 210 yards out. Mission accomplished off the tee but a poorly struck approach shot cost a stroke.

The fairways are relatively generous in width but all seemed to be on the scruffy side. Fairways turned both right and left and the rest pretty much ran straight. Several of the holes on the front nine have stands of mature trees lining the fairways, but if you keep the ball relatively straight they really shouldn't come into play. The holes open up to the elements on the back nine.

Greens and greens complexes varied nicely in size, shape and difficulty. The greens invited well struck approach shots and played consistently in speed and pace. Once on the green, your task is far from complete as you need to successfully read the subtle breaks and navigate the humps and bumps. The layout utilizes the tree lined fairways and makes good use of the natural landscape to give relief from the surrounding prairie.

Hazards include about seven ponds and all but one of the eighteen bunkers are found greenside.

For some reason my golf cart died on the way to the tee box on hole 17 but a quick call to the clubhouse was made and within a few minutes a rescue party delivered a replacement cart. By not straying too far off the beaten path and avoiding any trouble or hazards, I surprised myself by carding a 78.

The Hanna G&CC is a fun track. By avoiding the simple errors, make some good swings, drain a few putts and more than likely your score will reflect that. Make sure you have a can of "OFF" in the bag as the mosquitos were out for blood and it required two applications to keep them at bay.

Difficult rough

A lot of recent rain and a rough that is rapidly growing made for a difficult round. This was a 9 hole course that redesigned for 18. The last time that I played this course the new 9 were not mature, but things have really improved. Stay out of the rough and bring along some mosquito spray for an enjoyable round
