A Second Shot at Waterton Lakes Golf Course
My first experience at Waterton Lakes Golf Course, about 25 years ago, was less than ideal. We played on an extremely cold and windy fall day, which made for a miserable round. Despite the challenging conditions, we were captivated by the stunning scenery and vowed to return one day for a second shot. This time, we were blessed with nearly perfect weather: sunny, warm, and with only a light breeze.
Waterton Lakes Golf Course is a truly special place. Be aware that the course's highest point is at an elevation of 1,330 meters (4,365 ft), so if you're not used to the thinner air, walking the course can be quite a workout. The layout, a classic Stanley Thompson design that opened over 100 years ago, is a wonderful journey through the valley. It's not a long course at 6,123 yards, but it offers a variety of holes that climb up and down, making it challenging enough for the average golfer. The elevation and dry, firm fairways provide some welcome bonus yardage off the tee.
Every hole is a postcard moment, with towering Rocky Mountains serving as a breathtaking backdrop. The tee boxes were small but level and in good condition. The fairways were dry and brown due to a very dry summer, but the ball still sat up nicely. The first cut of rough was minimal, but the second cut was a thick and unforgiving fescue grass. The small, mostly flat greens were in good condition, well-watered, and held approach shots nicely.
The clubhouse is a small, quaint building that feels like a step back in time. It has a well-stocked pro shop and a full food service with a patio overlooking the first tee and the 18th hole. While I didn't see a driving range, there is a putting green right in front of the clubhouse.
Overall, I would highly recommend Waterton Lakes Golf Course. It's worth the drive just for the scenic views alone. While it was a bit overpriced for the course type and its condition, it's important to remember its remote location and the difficult year-round conditions they contend with to keep it operating. It's a true gem and a fantastic experience for any golfer who appreciates stunning scenery and a classic layout.
