Great Course Despite Wet Conditions
Played early in the morning after heavy overnight rain but the course was in great condition. Beautiful piece of land with a nice mix of trees and water. Comparable to the Bear Slide course in Cicero but a better value in my opinion. Tees, greens and fairways were excellent.
Beautiful Course
This course is a hidden gem. It is just beautiful, both the landscape and the condition of the course. The fairways are in country club condition: green and lush. The greens are fast but do not have unfair undulations or extreme slopes, so I was able to adjust to the speed. The layout has a nice variety of holes, with some in the woods, some fairly open, some water, some sand, some elevated, a few blind shots. There are hazards but usually a bailout option is provided. I played it for the first time last summer and I was so impressed by it that I just had to get back before this season was over and I was very glad I did. It was a beautiful warm, sunny fall day and I had a blast. There was a good number of players on the course for a weekday, but I was able to play through a couple groups and got in 18 in 3 hours. It is an hour to drive from Lafayette, but worth it.
Nice course....One major problem!
This is a very nice course. It is an hour and a half drive from me but we try to play it a couple times a year. Condition is normally very good. Bunkers have a funky kind of dirt/sand with lots of little rocks so they play quite different from normal sand bunkers. Greens were in great shape and were moderately fast, which I like.
THE PROBLEM: I normally play from tees that are 6000-6500 yards. The white tees here are around 6500 and the blue are around 6000, We decided to play the blue tees, however many of the blue tees were moved up to where the gold tees normally are! There was no reason for this...they were not doing any work on the tees. SO WHY DO COURSES MOVE THE TEE BOXES FOR NO REASON. I DO NOT WANT TO PLAY TEES THAT ARE 20-40 YARDS CLOSER THAN THEY SHOULD BE. ONE HOLE WAS SUPPOSED TO PLAY 117 YARDS FROM THE BLUE, BUT THEY HAD THE TEE MOVED UP SO THAT IT ONLY PLAYED 94 YARDS!! THIS IS BULL, AND IT TICKS ME OFF WHEN THEY DO THIS. TODAY ,INSTEAD OF PLAYING A COURSE THAT WAS SUPPOSED BE AROUND 6000 YARDS, IT WAS PLAYING AROUND 5500.
Pristine Shape
Rock Hollow is in the best shape I've seen over the last 5 years that I've visited. Tee to green they have it looking sharp. Greens were firm, fast, and true.
It has one of the best layouts in the state, with no two holes alike. Lots of risk/reward decisions along the way.
If you have not made the trip to visit the course, do it now. If you've been there before it's time to return. It's well worth the time and trip.
Great parkland, needs to heal
Rock hollow is one of my favorite layouts in the state and it is always a fun go around. The course wasn't in as good of shape as i remembered in the past. The fairways had some water damage to them and the greens were bumpy in spots The course overall was gorgeous as it always is, but she was rough around the edges. This course has potential to be one of the top courses in the state again, but i am hoping next year's weather is more forgiving to the golf courses.
I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to play a fun track, but if you've played it in the past conditions are not where you'd expect them to be.
Great Layout, So-So Conditions
Love the layout of Rock Hollow. Lots of holes that run through the woods with contours and elevation change. Some water in play too, like the pond on 7/18 which makes for some picturesque holes. No 2 holes are alike. Greens had a lot of character. That's the good news.
The bad news is it's not in that great of shape. Many greens have bare/sandy patches in them (though they still ran pretty fast). The rough was actually worse that the fairways in terms of conditions, and there were a lot of areas that were just dead in the fringes around the green. Sand was pretty firm and thin in a lot of spots. Obvious water/rain damage around the course, though given its remote location I wonder if it gets enough play to afford maintenance (only 8 cars in the lot before/after our round).
That said, it's worth a go just for the layout itself. If you find yourself on 31 between Indy and South Bend, definitely stop.Just temper your expectations for conditions.
Very poor conditions.
Attempted to play this Course 8-15-17. Checked in pro shop. Was assigned ancient golf cart that sputter like old Model T. Was told we could not drive the cart in the rough area.?? Purchased a bucket of balls for the driving range. Tee area was a horizontal piece of carpet that covered the practice tee box area. The first 3 holes: par 4,5,3. On all three holes I could not find any yardage markers in the fairways. Fairways were burnt out in spot areas. No markers on the cart paths (blue, white, red) none to be found. The sand traps were hard pan and edges had not been trimmed in quite awhile. Call me old school. Didn't have a view finder. However, I did find a yardage plate on the Par 3 tee box. I have no idea how this course could ever receive any rating above 3 stars. We left after the par 3. I was a guest of a fellow golfer. He was given rain checks for future play. Good Luck!
GREAT COURSE
Played here for the first time today......great layout and will be back! Almost every hole is unique and layout gives a wide variety of hole types and lengths. There are multiple tees so you can pick the best for your skill set. You can make it challenging or somewhat challenging based on which tees you tee it up from. Fairways had some brown spots due to recent weather, but otherwise course was in really good condition.
Slightly tricky to find.......as you come north on US 31, proper exit is before you get to US 24....actually is off of BUS 24......east on BUS 24 after you exit off 31, then north on S 250 W...worth the drive!!!!
All-around great experience
Can't think of a bad part of our 4 hour round at Rock Hollow. We arrived on a Saturday morning after receiving 6+ inches of rain over the last 7 days. Greeted by very friendly staff and told to our surprise that carts were being let off path. Course was in insanely good shape after the amount of rain we've had and greens were rolling true. First time playing and have memory of every hole due to something interesting / unique about each one. One of the best golf experiences I've had in central Indiana. Would rank this right along with The Fort, Prairie View, and Purgatory if located in Indy. Worth every bit of the 90 minute drive and hard to beat the price!
Outstanding Golf Course
Course condition was excellent. Staff was very friendly. Course layout was amazing. Beautiful surroundings. Greens had just the right amount of undulation and rolled true. Worth the 2 hour drive. Will definitely return.
Bring your Putter
I try to play this course every year at least twice.... Great layout.... Dye and Liddy did a great job on the greens. . . There's really not a straight Putt anywhere ?. . . From tee to green you will use almost every Club in your bag and I really like that...Off the Tee Box you have to be precise on your drives..... On some holes you do not want to fire at the pen.... Make sure you have a yardage book from the clubhouse because some greens you want to be in the middle or below the hole..... Around the greens make sure you have your Cleveland wedges with you because you will need them when you come up short or spray it to the right or spray it to the left ?. . . On the greens their typical Pete Dye greens ?. . Small hidden humps and swells but fast and true . . . What you see usually is what it does ?. . . (look for small humps and swells). . . As for the facility it is very nice and and has all the amenities you need.... So for a upgraded course bring your A game if you want to go low and make sure you Pipe them straight
Well Worth the Trip to Peru to Play the Rock
What a jewel to have in the middle of Indiana. The course layout is very nice with a variety of holes that all skill levels can play. There are some short holes and some long par fives and fours for the long hitters. Course conditions were the best we had all weekend and that included playing Bear Slide. The value is outstanding for a course of this caliber too. Very scenic course for this area.
Putts rolled true and stayed on line on every green. On a Sunday, we saw maintenance workers smoothing out the bunkers. The staff is very helpful .
I would recommend this to anyone on the way to Indy or coming home.
Great Scenery and Great Layout
We were due to play the Purdue Kampen Course and the course was closed due to excessive rain so we went north where the rain wasn't as severe and I'm glad we did. We were able to get right on after a slight delay and it is a beautiful course with a great layout. Hard to believe it was a rock quarry. There are a few challenging holes if you decide to be aggressive, but overall the views are great and I will definitely play this course again.
Solid, traditional golf
If they didn’t tell you, you wouldn’t guess that this tree-lined championship level golf course was once a quarry. Opened some 30 years ago, the mature hardwoods, lakes, bunkering and mature greens look like they’ve been here forever. This fifth-generation family-run operation is also as welcoming as it gets. Overseen by patriarch Terry Smith, the family has a passion for the game. As for the course, it was designed by Pete Dye protégé Tim Liddy, so it’s solid throughout and from the more rearward tees, a tough test.
Fantastic Golf and Staff
Had not played the course for quite a few years but our group of golfers decided to play the course on our way to Indy for a weekend golf trip. We played on a Friday afternoon and paid the twilight rate which was an unbelievable value. The course was in great condition and the staff was extremely courteous and helpful. It is a definite stop again on our agenda next year. Great time...really a hidden gem.
Awesome golf course
The staff was really great. Smiling and most helpful. We arrived early and being midweek, we were able to start earlier. Course is difficult for average players (us), but very fare. Can't wait to go back.
Great course and definitely worth the drive!
This was the second time I've played this course and it will remain in my yearly rotation. Tee boxes and greens were in great shape. The fairways were flawless.
PERFECT DAY
COURSE IN VERY GOOD SHAPE,FAIRWAYS A LITTLE WET CARTS ON CART PATHS WAS ONLY DOWN SIDE COULD HVE BEEN OFF PATHS, LONG DRIVE FROM INDY BUT ALWAYS WORTH IT
Tough yet keeps you involves
I had a coupon for a $25 18 holes with cart from another special they had. Anytime I can play on a top notch golf course at a cheap price like that...perfect day!! The course is difficult for high handicappers like myself but it keeps me involved in my game because if its condition and beauty!!! Even nicknamed an island on the back nine "Ball Island" and trust me you'll know it when you see it!! Highly recommend traveling to Peru, IN for this hidden gem, you will not regret it!!
