A forgiving layout and fun meeting new kindred spirits. Photo submitted by u670585824 on 04/21/2017
almost perfect
it was a great day on the course. greens were great except for one on the back side.
Fall Golf
Fall golf in Maine is great because of the foliage, but keep a close eye on your ball, or the leaves and pine needles will swallow it up. First time playing this course, which made the doglegs an adventure, but the challenges from the ladies' tees were fun, and the course was in good shape. Great deal using the phone app!
Awesome
Can't beat that special rate on golf now it was a very beautiful course
Great course
It's a good course with more than few challenges. Some of the greens are not well kept. Over all a good course for the money. Recommend cart
Enjoyable Course and Good Pairings
I really enjoy this course. I have played it three times now and consider it a favorite option when in the area. The links style open course is forgiving to my on again/off again slice. Hilly terrain gives a nice challenge as well as strong par 3s. Only slight request would be for keeping water coolers full for the afternoon golfers.
Wide open
Great course to play. Wide open, nice layout. Elevation changes made the course competitive . Will def. play again my next visit to Maine .
Course is in great shape, play was a bit slow.
This is a fun course that is in great shape right now.
Greens are excellent!
Pleasant day of golf
Course was in great condition very lush and green. The elevation changes are a lot of fun especially for a Florida golfer. I found it very enjoyable .
Best Condition in Years
Riverside is a muni course that gets lots of play. But even with the heavy play, the course is in nice shape. Greens were very true with almost all in nice shape; a bit slow but very puttable. Fairways also lush; Somewhat wet from recent rains. Cudos to the City of Portland for putting the money and maintenance into Riverside; not all municipal courses are in this good a shape. Having said all these nice things, the only criticism was the pace of play. A beautiful day brought lots of golfers out and it became a 4 1/2 hour round. Not the courses' fault; it was just slow.
Nice place for golf without stress
We liked this course. It was in a good shape. The staff was very friendly to us German people.
Comfortable course
I've played Riverside a lot over the years. I think it's in better shape now then it's ever been. Good job.
A great day
Riverside North is a gem. The fairways and greens are in fine condition. Unfortunately, too many of my balls go to the woods and sand traps.
Riverside north
It was in good condition. First hole took forever because of a party foursome, but the ranger stepped in and had us play through.
Riverside was always the best sledding as a 1950's kid.
This is an interesting course with the hills making for fun golf. Riverside is in good shape this year and the moderate level of play will keep it that way
An Inconsistent Enigma, Waiting to Step Up
Riverside is a course that has baffled me for years. it is a great old Stiles layout that has been neglected for decades by its cruel caretaker the City of Portland. It is rumored that the City has woken up and taken a more aggressive management stance on improving the whole facility. We will have to wait and see. When I played, the greens were just coming back after having been totally lost in the summer of 2013. Play was down and the rest of the course conditions were fair at best. There has always been more clover and crabgrass in the fairways and tees, but at least it had been cut. The bunkers are hardly sand filled and cart paths have dangerous washouts in them. That all being said, it is a fun layout that showcases golf architecture from another era. The third hole is a par 3 of that ilk. Downhill, through a chute and over a swale, it is a tough target to hit. The 12th is a good par 4 that doglegs right, with the river all the way down the left side. The par 5's on the course are all very short by modern standards, but they are not automatic birdie holes. Riverside is tied into most every discount program out there, so paying the full non-resident rate is hardly necessary. It can be a good value, even when it is a bit beat up. It is a great tease, because you can see where a once proud and great golf course stood and you can imagine how in the right hands it could return to it's past glory. The ball is in your court, if you will excuse the tennis term, City of Portland. I hope you will step up and make Riverside a truly worthwhile golf destination once again.
River dump
Tee boxes bare and divot filled, fairways are ok at best, mounds holes and divots. Greens are very inconsistent, some very nice with a true roll and others nearly dead and bare. Bunkers are concrete like and rock filled. Course charges like a top end Portland area course but are far from it. Leave this course to the hacks!
