Bermuda: A top-flight island golf getaway in the Atlantic

With its famous pink-sand beaches and sparkling turquoise water, Bermuda has long been a favorite getaway for stateside travelers, especially those on the east coast since there are many short, direct flights from a number of cities. With the highest concentration of golf courses per square mile in the world, Bermuda has also become known as a superb golf destination.

The fishhook-shaped island is often mistaken for being part of the Caribbean islands but it's actually much further north where the Gulfstream keeps it nice and warm. One of the most popular courses is Port Royal Golf Club, which reopened in 2009 after a multi-million-dollar renovation. The signature 16th hole sits right at the edge of a waterside cliff and has been known to intimidate even the best players. Port Royal, of course, hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 2009–2014. joie8585 of Sanibel, Florida played Port Royal in June. "When we played the course was in beautiful shape," he wrote. "Very interesting design and breathtaking views of Bermuda to boot."

The Mid Ocean Club boasts a guest list that includes actor Michael Douglas and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and is largely considered the best in Bermuda. Belmont Hills is unique for its many water hazards and Riddell's Bay has the distinction of being the oldest course on the island.

Other courses to check out are Fairmont Turtle Golf Club, Tucker's Point, and Ocean View Golf Club.

Bermuda, contrary to the misconceptions of most people, isn't a Caribbean island. This tiny fish-hook-shaped British territory sits isolated in the middle of the Atlantic, off the coast of North Carolina. Bermuda is so cramped for space that none of its seven courses are regulation par 72s, yet several of them rank among the best in the world. Its five top combine to create a unique mix of experiences, from an exclusive private club to a professional tournament venue and a wildly scenic par 3.
