Traps
Traps are ground under repair everywhere. Sister course Torres Blancas has the same problem. Playing in the desert - no sand in the traps- I don’t get it!
Greens not ready for prime time
This is a great layout. Really enjoyed that part of the round. What took away from a potential 5 star rating was the greens. Very grainy and slow. Who knows. In a week they might be great with a little mowing.
Great track, but….
It is a course you have to play a few times with many semi-blind shots. It was over seeded but very narrowly - lots of hardpan and a slightly errant shot can run into the desert. Would love to play it when there is some semblance of rough. Bunkers are horrible. Pro shop staff inconsistent from apathetic to average. One friendly Marshall.
Overpriced for the poor shape it is in
Course doesn’t get the care it needs. Sand traps are the poorest in GV (which doesn’t say much for them). Once great greens are now slow and shaggy.
Pretty bad to say that Torres Blancas is in better shape but sadly it is so
Would play again
I have played Canoa several times now. Winter and spring are the times to play it. Course was in pretty good shape considering the lack of rain.
However, BUNKERS ARE HORRIBLE! Yes I know, stay out of the bunkers. Was only in one, but there is no sand, lots of rocks and not very nice on the clubs. My playing partners said the same. Wish they would put more effort into maintaining them though. Not a game changer though, would play again for the right price.
Could be so much better
The good...challenging holes with nice variety, fairways in mostly good shape, great practice facilities.
The bad...
Although fair for a good golfer, the back nine has many longer carries off the tee that can be frustrating for many and keep them from coming back.
There are lots of bunkers but every one had virtually no sand and were in terrible condition. Poor edges, sticky dirt that was often mud from irrigation, and lots of marble sized rocks to tear up clubs. I did not feel guilty improving my lie or lifting the ball to make sure there were no rocks underneath. The worst looking bunker was right in front of the hotel. You'd think they'd put in some sand for appearance sake. The greens were cut very long and with the variety of grasses present (not a good thing) were very slow and inconsistent on speed and grain. There were also a lot of areas that need improved maintenance. All of these issues can be solved with an infusion of money but people have been saying that for at least 4 years.
Overall good conditions
All good except for large rocks in bunkers, take a drop unless you want to ruin your wedges
Good time.
The indoor staff is extremely rude and very uninviting. The starters are amazing! Wish going inside could be avoided.
Busy course but we played in 4 hours and 15 minutes
Pace of play was ok.
Like all Green Valley courses the bunkers have no sand.
The most disturbing thing was seeing transmission fluid leaks all over the greens, every green.
Worth the drive from Tucson
Always play this during a Tucson visit .Played twice here in a week.
Great layout . This course needs good sand . Traps are bad rocks and hard pan .
I love the course but this must improve
Put A Little Money In It
This is a very scenic course with some real tight fairways.. It has nice elevations, but nothing too extreme. Definitely need to play it more than once to learn kanding spots. Greens had some mixed grasses on them that the golf pro with us got very frustrated about, but they were in good shape. What the course could use is some TLC - like rent a street (sidewalk) sweeper and clean the carts oaths of dirt and debris. Try to do something about the rocks in the bunkers like put some decent sand over them. Biggest complaint I had was that my friend dropped me off about halfwsy to my drive so he could go find his ball. We wanted some drinks and the drink cart was in the oerfect pisition to come towards me as I was going to my ball. I wsived and wsived, but she just sat there. Ended up wslking all the way to her and had to try to buy the drinks as she continued conducting perdonal business on her phone.
