Switched to Dinosaur and loved it.
I met Garrett at the bag drop and told him I wanted to play Dinosaur, but could only get a tee time for Sidewinder. He told me that they could get me on Dinosaur. It was my first time at Gold Canyon and a friend of mine raved about Dinosaur, so I was ecstatic to switch.
The starter got me playing as soon as I was done warming up, and that was the start to a wonderful round of golf. The weather was beautiful and so was the scenery. It was sunny with no wind.
The course takes you into the hills next to Dinosaur Mountain. That creates substantial elevation changes on several holes. The greens are fast so you should target the area below the hole on your approach. The fairways are wide enough to accommodate a little fade or draw. Water is in play on only one hole on the back 9.
I look forward to playing this course again. I played in the afternoon and 10 deer strolled across the course after 4:30 pm.
If you've never been to Gold Canyon, it's located 27 miles East of the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport off HWY 60.
Merry Christmas!
Great Course to play if you get a deal
excellent course and great conditions if you can get a break on the green fees
Best public course in arizona
Played all the best courses in the valley and this course is by far my favourite!!
Can't think of anything bad to say about it. Maybe the rubber matts on the range (no big deal) everything else is top notch ! You won't be disappointed if you play here.
The elevations and views are spectacular!
Enjoyed my round here
Everything was great about this course, the conditions were perfect, greens were in great shape, and cant say enough good things about the conditions. Amazing Scenery, feels like your in the middle of nowhere. Recommend this course -5 STARS
Target golf
Considering that this was the end of the summer, this course was in very good condition. Not a long course, but don't let that fool you. You really need to play smart here. Beautiful views throughout the course. With a summer rate, this was well worth the drive.
Absolutely perfect
Fabulous course with fun and friendly staff. Both courses, sidewinder and dinasour are amazing.
Top Course in Arizona
I did not think it was possible, but Dinosaur is just as beautiful as the Boulders. The fairways and greens were immaculate and the only negative about the course is that my concentration would sometimes waiver due to the magnificent surroundings. This course is a must if you come to Arizona to play golf.
Beautiful views
Omg what a beautiful course and so player friendly wish I could play here more often
Bring something to drink
First of all I will say the course itself was nice and has some spectacular views and I am glad I played. Everything else was disappointing. The driving range has old balls and has you hitting off mats. They do not have drinking water available out on the course, which downright shameful when it is well over 100. I'm sure they do it to squeeze more money out of you. And yet we saw the beverage cart only once. There is a snack shack that you pass twice during the round where you can get an overpriced beverage of your choice ($5 for domestic beer). So in conclusion, decent course, substandard amenities. If you play, bring plenty to drink.
Great Scenery
A great course nestled in the Superstitions, overall a short course that plays long and has a variety of challenges along the way. My group will definitely return again, we want to try our luck on the Dinosaur course. Only downside was that there are no water stations along the course and it was hot out.
Dino-Mite!
Played Sidewinder last week and the greens were still healing from a recent "punching"; Dinosaur greens are S-L-I-C-K! Practice by putting downhill on your driveway and try to make the putt stop 1' before rolling into the street!
STAY BELOW THE HOLE! Took me 1 hole and four putts to figure that out!
I've played some target golf courses before (Ocean View-now Trumps Palos Verdes layout, The Champions course at The Retreat) but Dinosaur is by far the better of those two hands down!
Spectacular Views
The dinosaur course is a real gem in the East valley. Every hole is a photo op. The course was in great condition and challenging, but yet provides plenty of opportunity to score. I will definitely play this course again, soon.
Best public course in Phoenix area
Severe elevation changes. Beautiful views on every hole. Played from the tips and it was a fantastic experience. A course very much worth traveling to.
Snake Bit!
Very nice layout! Didn't play the tips; too old for that nonsense. And because the 3-pars were on the 210 yd + side from the tips. VERY fair course from the black tees though. Enough challenges from there! Especially when the wind kicks up!
Greens were in the 2nd week of healing from their recent "punching" but they putt fairly true. I liked the dog-leg variations; not a lot of "straight" holes; makes for thinking out the next shot.
Very nice clubhouse and Vanessa (the Bartender) was exceptionally nice! She made hanging out for a couple of pops pleasant!
Will be back! Gotta try the Dinosaur!
Impressive
Beautiful course!! Winds through the mountains, spectacular scenery. Lots of elevation changes. Hole 5: par 3, 200 ft. drop tee to green! It was HOT, but overcast (we were lucky). Course in great shape for AZ summer. Excellent value, $50 on Golf Now. Locals, now's the time to play the Dinosaur!!
One of the best tracks in the valley of the sun
Fabulous course that is always in great shape with terrific views. Practice facilities are laughable and need to be updated. But other than that, one of the best courses in the valley.
Front nine has some elevation changes, back nine is more technical.
The fairways and tee boxes were excellent. The greens were hard with some type of problem. Not consistent grass. Speed was excellent and the roll was fine. Bunkers were average at best. Still, for summer conditions in the desert, to play a nice course like this for essentially $40 was a great deal. (And range balls were free, too. Nice restaurant deal - 50% off all menu items.)
Excellent course
played as a two-some..course in excellent shape.
No one was playing...
Very nice course
Good value. Excellent shape. Great views. Enjoyed the round, will definitely play again.
MUST PLAY!!!!
Anyone that comes to play golf in AZ must play this. This is my favorite course as the views are second to none.! Stellar staff makes this a wonderful experience. I've played the likes of troon, Quintero, tpc, boulders... This is the most fun you will have in golf out here. Very fair course, pins can be tough though. Great greens make the putting fun.
Gold Canyon is NOT worth the time. While the course has some interesting holes, it is rarely in great shape and has the WORST staff in the Southwest Section of the PGA. Lastly, check out the "NO" votes once this posts, re: Helpful. They actually have their staff thumbs down the experiences of paying customers. Do yourself a favor: Play ANYWHERE else.
